“Very comfortable stay and wonderful staff!”
Reviewed December 1, 2012

A very nice little hotel, right on the beach, excellent clean rooms with amazing sea views.
The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. They spoiled us with a complimentary fruit basket after sussing out we were honeymooners.
The small pool is very relaxing, a five minute stroll from the beach hotel to their jungle location.
Would recommend to anyone.

We've just got back from a two week holiday in Sri Lanka, staying 9 nights at the Thaproban Hotel - Unawatuna.

My partner and I only give credit where it is due and always give a 100% honest opinion. We have travelled to Thailand, Mexico, Bali, etc and can honestly say that the Thaproban is the BEST HOTEL WE HAVE EVER STAYED IN!!! The room was beautiful (no. 14) and always spotless, and made up every morning to an impeccably high standard. The hotel itself is gorgeous, with it's open rear restaurant area over looking the famous beach, and the breakfast restaurant area at the front.

After eating in Unawatuna for over a week we can say that the food here is the best in the area. Breakfast is also fantastic and always made to how you like (with seconds if you want!!!).

The main point that makes this hotel a winner for us is the staff, you literally cannot beat their friendliness, professionalism, willing to help and pure interest in what we were up to everyday. They gave us advice, made us feel welcome, and we were also very sad to leave them! The best hotel team we have ever met and doubt we will ever meet such a high level again on or travels.

If you're looking for a hotel to stay in at Unawatuna, you can stop looking - you're simply crazy if you don't choose the Thaproban!

Thanks to all the team for making our holiday one to remember x

Room Tip: Room 14 was fantastic!!

We had just a quick weekend getaway from Abu Dhabi, and although Unawatuna is somewhat difficult to get to from Colombo, the staff at Thaproban arranged a driver to meet us when our plane arrived. We checked in with no trouble and the room was fine, although basic. I did like the balcony, however. The staff at the restaurant is delightful, and I thought the food was delicious. The terrace overlooking the sea behind the hotel is very nice, but watch out at high tide as the waves will crash over the tables.

My only complaint is the noise, possibly due to the design of the building, but I can usually live with that. Very light sleepers may have an issue, though. All in all, it's a great hotel in a great location and I'd be happy to stay there again!

Writing this on our last night in unawatuna. We've enjoyed four nights at Thaproban beach house - our first stop in Sri Lanka. Prior to arrival the staff were attentive via email arranging a friendly, reasonably priced private transfer from Airport to hotel. We've subsequently booked driver Dias to take us to our next stop.
On arrival the whole team were there to great us, including the dog! All smiles and that's how it has stayed for the whole stay.
Priathya and Nuni (sp) have been gems - kept the beers coming and making sure we knew the best places to go during our short stay.
Room number 15 was big, with a sea view and plenty of people watching ops. Bed comfy - plenty of pillows! Bathroom spotless - could have been an extra towel each, but since they were changed every day you can't grumble.
Just had an amazing dinner and great cocktails overlooking the sea in the Thaproban restaurant - not the cheapest but certainly one of the best meals we've had so far.
Stay here and enjoy it! Worth every penny. Thank you

Thaproban seemed to be the best place to stay in Unawatuna given no high-end hotels (not a bad thing as this keeps Unawatuna small and unique). It is right on the beach and the rooms are fine. Toileteries and towels could be improved. The restaurant is excellent - some of the best food we had in Sri Lanka. Take ear plugs in case you find the sound of the waves crashing against to hotel too loud. The water is warm, safe and easy to get in. Lots of bars and restaurants to pop in along the beach - you can go out for evening withour your shoes!

Room Tip: definitely go for a superior room so that you get the balcony overlooking the beach

This hotel had a good reputation but has gone downhill recently.
Uncomfortable rooms - very, very noisy and flooded when it rained. Lack of quality and quantity of towels and not replaced frequently enough. Over-priced rooms and food.
Over-priced excursions - found ourselves in the worst quality vehicle in Yala National Park, paying much more than others who were in much better vehicles.
Very poor transport service to airport - because of hotel staff incompetence, our taxi set off late which meant we actually missed our flight.
Service with a smile - but only to try and get you to purchase other over-priced services.

Room Tip: Most rooms in this hotel are very noisy.

Thaproban Beach House is simply a delightful place to stay! The location on Unawatuna Beach is just wonderful, although you need to walk down a few metres further along for a wider expanse of beach. Our room on the top most floor was really lovely – very clean, nicely laid out, with a balcony and a large bathroom. Above all, the staff are just wonderful - from Nuwani at Reception, to Priyantha who waited on us so attentively to the ever smiling boys who do the cleaning and serving, everyone was warm, pleasant and helpful – very rare to find such level of guest service in Sri Lanka. We also thoroughly enjoyed the meals at the restaurant, the chef creates scrumptious seafood meals. Let the server suggest how your seafood selection should be cooked, you can’t go wrong this way. Also, give the toast a miss and opt for the delicious Sri Lankan breakfast instead.

We did however encounter an issue with our room booking made through the Agoda website. We booked and paid for a Superior room with a sea view and were thoroughly disappointed to find that our room only had a partial sea view and overlooked a carpark. To be fair, the staff went over and above norm to apologise and even offered to move us to another room the following day, but we were comfortable where we were so didn’t take up the offer. Better to make a booking through email or phone and be very specific about what you require. The room, although really lovely, could be made better with a few improvements: a shelf or rack in the shower area is much needed (where do you keep the soap??), a little table in the bathroom on which to keep toiletries, a mosquito net or vaporiser in the room, and an extra bedside table would not go amiss. Also, a light is left on in the corridors at night time which streams through the glass panel in the room door, so this should be turned off or made dimmer.

All in all, a fantastic place. Would definitely recommend and go back.
