Thaproban Beach House
Ranked #4 of 34 Hotels in Unawatuna
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed January 15, 2012

Booked the week (first week out of 4 in Sri Lanka) from Sweden before leaving. Arrived at the airport and where pick-up'ed by Presana, an employed driver. Arriving from two weeks in India I was surprised of the clean and well maintained airport. Presana spoke really good English and we had a pleasant two hour drive down to Unawatuna. The hotel is, together with their sister hotel Thambanpanni, probably two out of five-six best hotels in Unawatuna. Nice clean rooms (cleaned every day), superb breakfast menu (included in my rate), great restaurant menu at nighttime with good choice of seafood. The staff (everyone) always had a nice smile and positive attitude, they greated you by your name all the time (which seemed to be an honest gesture). The hotel is situated between a small narrow but very loud street and the ocean! You might say that you are stuck between two loud options, the street or the waves from the ocean. You might think that the sound from the ocean is a bit romantic but I might say that they are loud! Try to ask for a room that are not one of those options (if possible).

After the first week I swopped for another hotel and decreased my cost per night from us 55 to us 20, only 25 meters from Thaproban. Rooms almost the same but no breakfast (you can still eat that at Thaproban at the cost of 800 rupiees).

Pros; clean, familiarity, restaurant, "location", use of sisterhotels pool.
Cons; expensive, "loud location".

Tony, Sweden.

Visited this hotel after a while (stayed there few years ago and it was great) for lunch and they didn't disappoint all of us ! The sea food was excellent.. should try both the Jumbo prawn's and the Coconut crusted prawn's. The pizza too were very good.

The setting, ambiance, friendly staff, the beach ... was super. Will go back.

Room Tip: The sea view rooms are great

Dirty -The sheets was dirty when we got our room, very disgusting. When we asked for new we where told that the day of changing sheets was the next day!!??

Glasses in the restaurant where often dirty.

Only drinking water provided in room the first day, all other 5 hotels that we spend had this every day.

Noisy - Openings in walls that allow noise into room, loud music until 4am.

Food very poor, much better at other restaurants.

Management, especially woman in reception, did not bothered when consulted. Not service minded at all. At other hotels personal was happy and nice but not here.

Cleaning personal was very nice though.

Dear Hepples Family,

Thank you for your review, We are sorry that you have had a bad experience which is rare compared to other guests who stayed at Thaproban, The hotel has a dedicated laundry service and the sheets are well cleaned before having them in the rooms.

The noise is made by properties by the beach and its common to all hotels by the beach and its on weekends and not played during week days unless its a special holiday.

Im very surprised about the complaint of the reception lady as we have good feed backs about her service from other guests.

Thank you,
Lenora

We loved this place for the ambience, the amazing food, friendly staff, and location near the beach. However, for our timing it was not ideal for traveling with two small children. We rented the upstairs beachview room because it was a family room. What we didn't know is that the family room was connected by a steep wooden staircase (not ideal for small kids). Additionally, there was a beach disco down the beach when we first arrived and the music sounded like it was in our room! It lasted until 2 in the morning and included fireworks.

That being said, it would have been perfect with older kids and if there had not been the disco. My parents stayed in an interior room for the week and loved it. Since I was too nervous there would be another disco keeping us up all night were were able to move to another guest house (since all the interior rooms were booked). I would go back again and select an interior room.

This was the most expensive place we stayed out in Sri Lanka, but our least favorite. We had the penthouse suite, which was very nice. But that was the only thing we liked about the place.

Service was quite arrogant, especially the guy working in the restaurant. The boys working with the house-keeping were very friendly, hard working and deserved a big tip.

The hotel is cramped between other hotels. There is no beach in front of the hotel. Nowhere to sit in the shade. No lounge chairs.

Techno music coming out from all the neighboring places.

If you want to spend your holiday listening to trance music and drinking vodka-redbull out of buckets, then I guess Thaproban Unawatuna is the place to go.

If you wish to relax and read, I strongly suggest you go somewhere else. Mirissa is much better for that purpose.

Dear Max,
Thank you for your review, we are sorry that you didn't like the hotel however glad to know that you enjoyed the suite. The noise is not made by the hotel its by places in the beach which plays disco music. The dates you have stayed with us were 26th December until 29th December 2011 which is normally festive times due to Christmas and new year.

We hope you will come again and experience unawatuna and Thaproban beach house during a quieter time.

We stayed here for two nights as part of 6 day tour. Amazing location, when the only minor flaw you can find is the lack of shut eye, due to the noise of the thrashing waves keeping you awake, you know you have found a little piece of heaven (hence the only poor comment on sleep quality, which was nothing to do with the beds). We e-mailed ahead and managed to book a superior room, right on the front of the hotel, with a large balcony and quite possibly the best room view we have ever had. Staff in the hotel were very friendly. The fact that you could use their sister spa hotel (which is equally as beautiful in a different way), just yards up the road was an added bonus. Unawatuna beach itself has a nice feel to it, not touristy at all, with a nice mix of people including families and backpackers, with a couple of nice bars. It is possible to swim in the sea here, unlike many of the other places in Sri Lanka. The ocean view restaurant is just another plus of this place. In summary, this place (or it's sister spa hotel) should feature on all bucket lists.

Room Tip: E-mail ahead and ask for a superior ocean facing room (if you aren't a light sleeper, otherwise...

The staff here could not have made us feel more welcome. We stayed in a sea view room for 5 nights and even a cyclone in the middle of our holiday, left the staff unfazed. They managed to provide hot food when most of the street was in darkness as the electricity was affected and many holiday makers staying in other hotels ate in our hotel. The food was very good and we noticed that even when the power was restored people came back to the restaurant again. It was great having access to the pool at the sister hotel (5 mins walk) as we were hassled quite alot on the beach by locals trying to sell us stuff. They are not aggressive but can be quite persistent so the pool was far more relaxing.

Room Tip: There are a variety of different rooms available so it is best to ask the hotels advice.
