We , a family with 4 children, stayed for 9 nights in the "Hibiscus" bungalow,a very spacious and comfortable bungalow: Hot water, mosquito nets for every bed, and fans. Each of the bungalows at this place has its own access to the beach with a private area with deck chairs under Palm trees. We loved every day of our stay very much. The staff is very friendly and always ready to help in case you want to organise something like a trip of snorkelling, visiting a local village etc..
James ,the owner, is very nice and helpful. In addition to our stay at The Tides, he did organise for us a terrific 9 day safari , which we started right after our stay at the lodge. He had organised everything to perfection, always in line with what we wanted. We exchanged quite a few emails beforehand in order to know exactly what kind of Safari we wanted. And we got it! Great! We can highly recommend using his services for your Safari. His knowledge about the National Parks, the lodges in them, the manageable program per day etc. is very deep and you can entirely rely on his advises.
The food was delicious, with a lot of nice fish and fresh vegetables. This place is great, the surroundings beautiful and to sit at the bar overlooking the Indian Ocean whilst a light breeze cools you a little bit down is a slice of paradise..we would like to come back there any time..

Thank you for your review. It was a pleasure having you and your family at Tides over Christmas and I am really pleased you enjoyed the safari I arranged for you after you left Tides to the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater.
As you know this is a service I can offer to those who wish to stay at Tides. The booking is handled by my UK company 'Utopia Tanzania' which is a fully registered tour operator. I can arrange a safari to anywhere in Tanzania, and benefit of book through me is that I have on the ground information and local knowledge and can suggest many different and un-discovered places to visit and stay if that is what people want.

The only place to stay in Ushongo, we loved everything about this Lodge. The staff are well mannered, attentive and friendly. The food was excellent and to a high standard. The lodge itself is extremely well designed, from the bar to the rooms. Thoughtful touches, like cold water in our room when we arrived and the mosquito net released over our bed before we retired to our room for the night. The management were also very kind, easy to get along with and very helpful. Thank you for a fantastic stay!

Spacious, comfortable bungalows set amongst coconut palms, miles of white sand and the sound of the ocean - that is paradise after a frenetic week on safari.
If you want night life and constant entertainment, The Tides is not for you. But if like me, you enjoy beautiful surroundings, a bar looking out to the beach and the sea, plus wonderful food with friendly staff to look after you, then it is perfect.
We arrived (a family group 3 adults 2 children) tired after 8 days safari. The pool was an immediate attraction for the children, but the sea was warm and the waves fun.
The lodge has its own kayak and sailing dinghy, plus deep sea fishing trips and snorkelling from the nearby sandbank can be organised. There is also a dive school 10 minutes walk along the beach. Equally attractive is time to immerse oneself in an endless source of reading material - maybe accompanied by a morning coffee or evening G & T!
Whilst we were there we were fortunate to witness turtles hatching - a conservation project is sited along the beach from the Tides. The research team have been rescuing nests from the sandbank (which once was an island) for over 5 years with the objective of turtles returning to the mainland to nest in the future. The whole project was explained and the children were fascinated by the tiny little turtles scurrying to the sea.
Pangani is interesting to visit - it is now very run down but retains much evidence of a colonial past and a sad history of slave trading.

This is a wonderful place to relax or to be as active as you choose. Locally sourced fresh produce frequently enhances the menus, plus child friendly options are always available!
We all loved it and would go back again any time.

Room Tip: All bungalows look out onto the beach and sea.

Thank you for your review and really pleased you were able to witness a turtle nest hatching during your stay. This is really a special event and we are so lucky to have Wim & Kirsten from Kasa Divers who started the project some years ago. The $3 we collect from each guest who go snorkeling to Maziwe Island goes to Friends of Maziwe which funds the turtle project.

a really lovely place to relax after a busy safari holiday. Down to earth, but really welcoming, superb food and delightful staff and very friendly and helpful owner (James). A great setting right on the beach. Snorkling, fishing and other pursuits available, but on the expensive side and depend on the sea swell. Very nice swimming pool, but the sea is warm as toast, though the sea-weed a bt of a problem when we were staying. In summary, a great place to veg out - take enough books; most of the ones we saw left in the rooms are in German!

Room Tip: ask for a morning call with tea/coffee. It is included but you need to tell the staff you want it.

Thank you for your review and very pleased you enjoyed your stay. Indeed seaweed does come and go and during September and October as is natures way. As you will have seen when you were there we do make efforts to minimize the impact to guests by raking the beach in-front of the lodge so there is always clean white sand directly in-front of each room.
I take your point about the snorkeling and we have actually decided to reduce the cost a little. We do have to cover the Marine Park fees that have increased recently to $10 per person and a $3 per person fee for the conservation of the reserve through Friends Of Maziwe. We provide all the equipment, towels and drinks and a shade. It is a 30 minute boat ride so we do have fuel costs to consider too. Given that the snorkeling is really very good I hope that the new charge of $35 per person (with a minimum charge of $90) represents very good value for money.
Thank you for your comments and observations.

Delicious, fresh, healthy meals, a comfortable bed and a long beach with no one on it - what could be better than that? Not to mention the marine park just 10 kilometers off shore with crystal clear water and fabulous dive and snorkeling opportunities at reasonable prices (arranged through the nearby Kasa Divers)… And my 7 year old daughter loved the swimming pool. She's not fully confident yet in the sea, but happily spent hours in the swimming pool.

We flew to the Pangani airstrip direct from Arusha on Coastal Aviation. The flight took a little over an hour. We were met by a Tides' Land Rover, and a half hour later were at our beach front cottage. Very easy!

This was my 3rd stay at the Tides in the past 6 years. It's gone from strength to strength. The rooms were well maintained, with screened windows, an airy en suite bathroom with a lovely hot shower, and the best part was a very comfortable bed. I am a stickler for beds. I was given a room with a proper king sized mattress, nice and firm, but with enough give that I could sleep on my side comfortably. The bedding and mosquito net were all in good shape and there was an electric fan which we didn't really need in October as there was a nice breeze most of the night. My daughter was set up on a twin bed with her own mosquito net. I don't think we saw a mosquito though our whole time there.

The cottages all have a sea-view and are just a few meters from the beach. The beach had a bit of seaweed washed up, which happens at that time of the year, but it's possible to walk for a few kilometers in either direction on beautiful sandy beach without seeing anyone but a few fishermen. This is what the East Coast of Zanzibar was 20 years ago. Either side of the Tides Lodge are private residences which are not much used. A kilometer to the north is a small fishing village, which is kind of interesting to wander past. The kids wave and there's the odd fisherman repairing his net, or a group of women braiding each other's hair. This is definitely not the place to go for a rocking nightlife or resort experience.

The beach all the way along is devoid of rock or sea urchins so one doesn't have to think twice before jumping in for a swim. The bottom is sandy for about as far out as one could easily swim. My daughter and I have a thing against seaweed so we didn't spend much time swimming but at other times of the year we've spent lots of time in the sea. We did enjoy an incredible trip out to Maziwe Marine Park.

We spent 5 nights at The Tides Lodge this time around and I think it was a good amount of time. We really settled in and felt at home. The staff were attentive without being overbearing. The kitchen accommodated my gluten free dietary preference admirably and were very flexible about offering special options for my daughter.

I really don't know why tourists persist in going to the resort choked beaches of Zanzibar when places like Ushongo Bay in Pangani exist. I guess it's hard to compete with the "romance" that Zanzibar conjures up. But really, what is more romantic than having a gorgeous long stretch of white sandy beach to yourself??

Room Tip: There are only 12-14 rooms. Families with kids might want to be in 7 or 8 nearby to the swimming poo...

Thank you very much for your review and so pleased you and your daughter had a lovely time.
You are not the first person to say that Ushongo is like Zanzibar was 20 years ago - .ie. no tourists, and no troublesome beach boys.
Hope to see you again soon.

Just so beautiful here. It is simple and relaxed with all the important things just right - like great tasting food, clean and thoughtfully decorated rooms, a good hot shower, lovely clean pool, friendly staff and as for the location... It doesn't get much better than this. We choose here over Zanzibar every time. Just go!
