Best place on this strech of beautiful beach. We arrived as guests and left as friends. Gorgeous moon raises, friendly atmosphere, good music and fun. Good selection of food and fresh fish and sea food.

Drifters is AMAZING, awesome moonrises over the ocean, perfect blue sunny days snorkelling off Maziwa Island (a great big sandbar in the ocean), eating endless seafood; prawns, squid, fish in delicious buffets or a-la-carte, drinking copious amounts of scotch (sorry Mark & Tuma we drank you dry), and enjoying fantastic company. The walks on the beach, the swimming, the waves crashing at my sandy door...please don't come if you don't like sand...it's a beach afterall! It was the most ideallic, natural, rustic, relaxing holiday I've ever had! Lucky for you guys it takes a few hours on a bus from Arusha or I'd be there every weekend! Thanks so much Tuma & Mark xoxox

Room Tip: If you like rustic, pick the a-framed kibanda on the beach...it's very basic, but there is nothi...

My friends and I visited Drifter's a couple of times in 2010. We were planning on conducting a coral reef study and got an experience that was far greater than any paradise you could imagine. After scouting the place out for a week in October 2010, we returned for the entire month of November and camped on the beach. Living there for those weeks was the most relaxing time of my life. There is a reef offshore only a few hundred meters and Mark is always up for heading out to Fungu-Zinga or Maziwe's reefs. Everyday we swam or kayaked to the nearby reef or sailed out to Fungu-Zinga on mgalawas (sailing vessels in the Ushongo village next to Drifter's). The reefs out there are incredible. There is also a dive center (Kasa Divers) just a short walk past Ushongo on the beach. If you time your visit right, you can see plenty of sea turtle hatchlings making their way into the ocean. The atmosphere at Drifter's is so relaxing and the company of Mark and Tuma could not be more welcoming. I thoroughly enjoyed chatting in the evenings with Mark, often about fishing or traveling. We headed out to Zanzibar for a few days to celebrate a friend's birthday during this time and it was well worth it! Economically, it is far cheaper to arrange a trip to Zanzibar through Drifter's. Flights through Dar are ridiculously priced and ferries are overcrowded (and occasionally sink because of this). We left the lodge at 4am under a brilliantly star-lit night and arrived at Zanzibar around 8am ready to explore the island for a few days. I could write forever about our experiences, but having traveled to remote regions all over the world, this is the one that I think about returning to every day, and a large part of it is due to the location, but an even more memorable part is due to the atmosphere that the people of Drifter's provide. That is why I am still thinking of the place years after my visit (It made me select a month of our visit...but the options didn't go all the way back to 2010...that's why it says April 2012). If you ever in your life get a chance to head out there, go.

An amazing place to stay, lovely bandas which are kept so clean by the staff. The owners Mark and Tuma are amazing and so so friendly, offer great food, usually fish caught in the indian ocean that very day. Mark took us out on his boat to a small island to do some snorkelling which was fantastic. Its such a relaxed place to stay and i will certainly be back. Staff are so happy and friendly too. The local villagers live nearby and its great to be with them too, I love Africa and this place is paradise. Drifters also held a wedding for guests, a first on Ushongo beach, Mark and Tuma arranged it all and it was fantastic. Highly recommened. Thanks to all at Drifters and I'll be back ASAP. XX

We stayed here for some nights, and we took the beach bandas. At night you could hear the ocean, and even leave the door open, because it was so safe and nice. When you wake up, you could see the ocean fresh and free. It was such a lovely time, you can swim, relax, have very delicious food, walk endlessly on the beach, make a horse ride, it was so nice! Hope to go back soon, a perfect get a way, or a good option instead of zanzibar.

If You want to find a place and feel like mostly welcome, almost like being visiting by your friends, choose this one. The couple (Mark and Toma) owning the place are comfortably grazy and cheerful people, and the villigers nearby also friendly and nice people.. Also the rooms , with nice arabic style beds are beautiful and clean, food sometimes average, but sometimes exclusive.
Can´t praise enough this place. Just a little heaven on earth.
