We stayed here for 1 night camping. To begin with we were charged $7 per person, so 2 people sharing the same small tent was $14. Which is more expensive than most guest houses and hotel we stayed in in Tanzania. The camping spots were literally patches of sand, no covers and no power points/ lights. The shower and tap water is so salty that it leaves you feeling unclean and sticky! For the prices they are charging they should at least provide fresh water like nearly every other place in Tanzania. There is nothing around the resort and the owners know this and extort the customers charging $6 pp for breakfast, $6 for lunch and $15 for dinner, this is extortionate prices when you consider the general cost of food in Tanzania is less than $1.50 per meal! We ended up walking 2km to the nearby village for food and paid less than $4 for 3 meals. Also there is no security at the place meaning anyone can walk up off the beach and take you're thinks whilst you are away from your tent. The beach was filthy with seaweed which is out of the control of the resort, however don't expect to find the picture perfect beaches you see when googling the place!

The good news came immediately upon arrival: "Unfortunately, our beach huts were double-booked, so we decided to upgrade you." Rest assured, our time in the beautiful and cosy bungalows was a one of a kind. We saw 99 little turtles hatching on the beach and struggling their way into the water, snorkeled off on Meziwa Island and marveled at the simple beauty of the resort and beach. Food is amazingly prepared albeit slightly on the expensive side (8,000 for a starter, 16,000 for main and 6,000 for dessert), there are (board) games to play everywhere and the staff are super friendly. Highly recommend it and we'll definitely come back here!

We were camping when I asked the manager if it was safe to leave our stuff she (a Swiss woman) told me 'It is a public place, I cannot guarantee your stuff will not be stolen.' Security is the least you can offer when you charge $7 for a spot in the sand.

The manager (a Swiss woman) was terribly rude to me. I was just shocked.
For no reason she shouted at me in front of the other guest in the restaurant.
She had misunderstand something I think. Anyway, you don't shout at costumers in front of other guests.

The beach is not that nice, and it is impossible to access by public transport and thus not suited for backpackers. If you are going to Zanzibar, skip this place, because the Beach Crab Resort has nothing more to offer than Zanzibar and Zanzibar is far more beautiful. A boat to Zanzibar is $140 from the Beach Crap Resort, while it is only $35 from Dar es Salaam.

Thanks for your review. I am very sorry what happend to you. We offer a safe box for free for campers which is at the reception and i do not know why she reacted like this. The swiss women is not working for us anymore since may 2016. Camping at The Beach Crab Resort is 6 US $ per person per night plus 1,5 US $ TDL (a tax which goes straight to the government). It is true that there is no public transport direct to Ushongo Beach. But you can reach Pangani with public transport and from there (16km) you can hire a taxi or a motorbike (max 10000 TZS). The boat to Zanzibar is an offer from a local Captain and not from Beach Crab. The price is for the boat. so if you find other travellers you can share the price. For sure Zanzibar is beautiful and worth travelling but if you look for a place far away from the crowd and the beaten track Ushongo Beach is a good option. If you want to make long and safe beach walks without any hassle from Beach Boys etc. and you look for camping on the beach you will not find it on Zanzibar.
For a lot of travellers coming from north going to Zanzibar Ushongo Beach is perfect to avoid the long journey to Dar and the terrible traffic and ferry situation.

We had a fun time there. Excellent services great time
The place is quite relaxing and very reasonable as well. We did a little bit of Kayaking but other activities were slightly expensive. The beach was good and we camped there so it was lot more fun

Resort is nice, clean and we always felt save there. The huts are simple, we had a one without ac and with shared bathroom. This was okay, the hut was big enough and close to beach. Bathroom was clean, always toiletpaper, not always soap or just soap mixed with water, but also this was okay. A big thing is that the water is so salty that it is not possible to brush teeths.. So you always need to take your own water with you.
Food was very tasty but prices are expensiv, also for the hut the price was high. The thing is that there is nothing around, so you have to drink and eat there the hole day. Usually Tanzania has cheaper prices, I know because I lived there, but well.
The staff was friendly and always around.
Beach and Ocean are okay, mayby it wasnt the perfect season. If you look for lonley beach you are right. But not like zanzibar-beaches it means no white sand and clear water, but thats all over on this coast.
Another problem is to drive to there. From moshi the way is long and not comfortable. You need to go by bus than change bus at central bus Station into daladala, than from marketplace to ferry and from there with another Daladala, so you need one day. We decided to take the bus from moshi to central busstation and than private taxi sendet from beach crab. When we arrived there where many drivers and we didnt know which one is the right man, so we had to call beach crab. It would be better to give the driver a paper with our names. For the way back we decided to take a privat jet from Beach crab to moshi, they told us that this is no problem but on the next day they had still no answer from the charter flight company, so we waited some days and everyday the staff told us no worry sometimes they need some time to answer. One day before our last day we asked again and the staff told us that isnt possible to fly back... So we had to take Taxi and Bus again. Our driver couldnt speak english and also in Swahili it wasnt easy, he brough us to the wrong point, there was no busstation, to come to the centralbusstation we had to pay more than settled. So our holiday was a bit stressful...
For complete Beach crab was okay and nice, but if I would choose again, I would take my money and fly directly to zanzibar, but if you prefer to stay at the coast it is a good Place, just a bit expensiv.
