After spending 3 days and an awful Christmas Eve at a horrible “hotel” nearby, we managed to get a tent at this beautiful spot for 7 days until new years.

Location

The “Beach Crab Resort” is located about 15-20 km south of Pangani at a beautiful, yet almost empty beach. More than 100 palm trees provide shade, there are only a few small Hotels spread around in this area and the Indian Ocean is clear and warm.

Housing

We spent 3 days in an actual tent that they had put up for us before we could move to a small hut/bungalow with solid beds, a roof, electricity, mosquito nets and walls made out of tent fabric. (It was a last minute arrival and everything else was booked out) You can also camp there or stay at their “Coconut Bungalows”, which we have not seen from the inside.

Sanitary facilities

For those who camp or stay at the tented camp, there are several community showers and toilets nearby. The Bungalows have their own bathroom. Everything gets cleaned three times a day and is working properly. The only disadvantage is the fresh water from the well. It mixes up with salt water from the ocean, so you will have to get used to taking a “salty” shower, but it is ok if you are aware of that.

Service

Is great! When you arrive you get a nice introduction and a tour around the compound, the owners and receptionists will provide you with all necessary information and even arrange special things if you ask for it (We actually had local fishermen from a nearby village picking us up with a wooden trimaran and taking us for a fishing trip). All employees speak very good English and provide a service that matches western quality standards and that we have unfortunately rarely experienced in Tansania so far. This includes getting things done for you (in time!), giving reliable information and serving food and drinks quickly.

Food

At Beach Crab we had the best food in Tansania so far. Everything is fresh and tasty. Breakfast always includes real coffee and/or tee, fresh juice, vegetables, some fruit, self-made bread, pancakes or eggs, cheese, peanut butter, marmalade and honey. Dinner comes with a starter, main dish and desert. At lunch you can choose out of several dishes. Sometimes, there will be a “beach BBQ” instead of a dinner with all sorts of salads, bread, sauces and dips, fish, beef and grilled seafood. The prices for food and drinks are fairly cheap for what you get (and keeping in mind that almost everything has to be brought from far away).

Activities

You can do a lot of sports and activities, such as playing volleyball, swimming, snorkelling, diving, windsurfing, canoeing or just laying at the beach. The staff will also organize day trips or a safari to close by saadani national park. They have a turtle project at a nearby village and diving school (30-45 minute on the beach). If you are lucky, you can see baby turtles hatching and dive away into the ocean. A must!

People

You will meet a lot of Expats that are working or travelling in Kenya or Tansania. There were many Germans, French and Dutch people, but also guests from other countries and some Tanzanians. Although the resort was booked out with about 40-50 people, the area at the beach is wide enough, so you do not get disturbed by other people and will always find an empty place at the beach. The decent amount of guests however helps to organize group activities, like volleyball games or snorkelling trips.

Summary

The best place to stay around Pangani for a fair price and high value – for young people, couples and families alike.

This resort is fantastic value. It's on a nice spot on the beach, has decent cheap accommodation, very good food, great facilities and bar area and the owners are really friendly and helpful. It seems to be much cheaper than other resorts in the area so we expected it to be a bit rough, but it was really lovely.

I would happily give it 5 stars if it were just a bit easier to get to! By public transport it's a bit of a nightmare and my only negative comment would be that the owners should try harder to help their customers actually get to and from the place. It costs a hugely overpiced 30,000 taxi fare to just get back to the ferry, from where you still have to drag you stuff another 10-15 minutes walk just to get to where the minibuses go from.

But the resort itself is highly recommended, and if you have your own car then you should definitely go.

The food, the people and the good vibe was so good, that me and my friends actually went back twice to this amazing place. Thank you, Alex and Tina, who made this vacation excellent. Its perfect for backpackers, but also older people and family's would have a good time here!

we chose beach crab, because it seems like a nice little hideaway and good value for money. but we were a little bit disappointed.
the first 2 nights we stayed in a room and this was quite nice, nice showers and decorations. but then we moved to one of the permanent tents and nothing was ok anymore. the tents needs more than only a little bit maintenance. showers and toilets available for the tents and camp site definitely not enough and only salt water for shower available. the food is boring, we had in 7 days only once fish and this in the beach resort! most of the time rice and german style food.
IKEA sends his greetings as well, it is amazing what apart from crockery you will find bought at IKEA and this in a country where you can find good locally made things in every corner.
for the BBQ (advertised on their website) we have waited 7 days but nothing happens.
the sandy white beach is great and you can swim all the time.
if you do your own camping with your own cooking equipment and do not care about the salt water showers, then it might be a perfect place, otherwise there are much better places around!
i think with a little bit attention you could make this place to a fantastic lodge!
