“Great day out”
Reviewed December 21, 2012

The Blood River site is atmospheric, and alive with history. The managing couple, Dons and Eurika, is doing an amazing job, with very little resources, despite what other people might say. I have always liked it to go there, as these people are friendly, with an open door reception to all guests. I will continue to support them whenever I can, or how...

“Very moving experience”
Reviewed November 23, 2012

I visited here with a tour group as part of our trip, and was not particularly interested in warfare or Zulu history prior to the visit. However, following a brilliant talk by a local guide and been driven around the various battledfields, I realised what an amazing episode of African history was portrayed here, and it certainly clarified my own muddled thinking about it all.
It was a long tour, and I have to say it can be very hot up at Isandlwana, so bring a large hat, plenty of water, a sunshade, as necessary. Its worth the slog. The sight of the mounds of stones marking the mass graves of the fallen soldiers will stay in my mind for a long time.

“History past, make your life last.”
Reviewed July 24, 2012

Without a well trained, guide escorting us through this site of monumental history for KwaZulu-Natal and further, the impact of these battlefields for the Zulu, Boers and British, we would not have fully understood the significance of our visit. Our guide collected us from the hotel in a well appointed four wheeled drive, spent a full day re-enacting scenes, reciting poetry and providing water for us as we sat in a group on chairs he had kindly set up for us under trees. He fully answered in depth questions being a local, discussed more recent history, events traditions and lifestyles before returning us to the hotel. An 8 hour day passed in a blink as it was brought alive for us. The Country Inn suggested the use of a guide. Money well spent.

I think the history presented here holds more interest to certain groups of people. The road to get to the site is a long gravel road, not in the best condition. It is certainly worth a visit, especially if you are South African.
