“Unusual and pretty hotel”
Reviewed September 2, 2013

I was there together with a tour by Riviera Holidays and at first site, was enchanted with the setting - silos, which resemble Kentish oast houses, largely in pairs around a garden site which in turn is surrounded by a flat plain of farmland containing ostrich, various antelope and scores of funny looking Cape Francolin birds which run around in flocks all over the estate. I was alotted a ground floor ensuite room in one (there was another room reached by outside stairs above me,) and it was small but attractive and most importantly, clean and insect free! However, it was very cold and the AC did little to help. The restaurant was ok, the usual buffet service from polite staff and the food was also ok, though not wonderful and quite expensive and payment via the bar could be slow. What seemed lacking was a comfortable lounge area in which to sit and chat comfortably whilst having either a coffeee or a drink. Since it was still cold at night sitting outside was not an option. Its probably more enjoyable later in the season when the weather is warmer.

The accommodation was in converted silos ,unusual but with plumbing problems, or in blocks reminiscent of Pontins 1960 style. The steps to the upper floor were metal and as we arrived during some rain quite scary. The surrounding countryside and views were excellent and we were treated to some wonderful children dancing enthusiastically with big smiles of enjoyment.
The staff in the hotel Bar were excellent but the restaurant staff could have taken a leaf out of their book. Food was poor and no alternative eatery nearby.

This is a special place. Wide open skies, wildlife and peace. A visit by local schoolkids who performed traditional dancing was particularly engaging. Visits to Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift were brought to life by our guide Dalton (who's met the Prince of Wales!)

This was my third and very enjoyable stay at the Battlefields Country Lodge for 1 night. After my guests (from the UK) and I visit Talana museum in Dundee and Blood River Monument we ended our day at the Country Lodge, with a beautiful garden and open space with a huge variaty of animals in a very close distance watching them while having our "sun downer drinks"

With our room over looking the fields with the zebra, ostrich, springbok and blesbok roaming, it was a good time waster watching them. With not much else to do in the vicinity, we visited with a tour group and were pleasantly surprised at the comfortable, well equipped rooms. The bar staff at the restaurant were fantastic and lovely young guys a real pleasure to chat too. We really enjoyed our stay perfect location for the Battlefield tours. Our only let down were two staff talking in Zulu belittling a tour friend, just so happened we understood it.

Room Tip: Try the Cilos!

Have you ever stayed in a silo. Here`s your chance. This is atypical lodge in the middle of now where. The rooms are clean. The Buffet style meals are very good. The payment hatch at the bar is where it all goes wrong. Clients just never get the hang of this. Good selection of wine. Property is very well laid out

Room Tip: Try the new block

Due there for three days. Room had no electricity but despite 3 complete no responce from indifferent staff. We had to insist on a move after an overnight and a day without electricity and had to move our own luggage. New room clearly not recently used as full of large insects. Urgh! Food not particularly good and general air of apathy pervades the staff.

Room Tip: Don't stay in the thatched ex-silos. Full of beasties!
