“Comfortable stay”

Nice country hotel in the main street of Dundee. Close to a number of different battlefield sites. The hotel will also arrange tours to the battlefields.

Rooms are quite basic, but clean and spacious. The downside of the location is that you are very close to the local mosque, meaning you get woken at 5am with the call for prayer.

Restaurant on site. Breakfast was nice with quite a variety. Dinner is a la carte. Food was average, nothing outstanding, although you get quite some nice fresh vegetables with each meal.

Don't expect luxury at this hotel or you will be disappointed. This is a very old hotel and has the character to go with it, consequently the rooms tend to be odd shapes and sizes. Our room was on the second floor in the main building. The bedroom was small but the bathroom was large. In fact it was a room with 3 separate rooms for the toilet the bath and the shower. I suspect that at one time it was a shared bathroom for the upstairs rooms. There is no air conditioning but there was a ceiling fan, which helped as it was quite warm during our stay. The bar staff were friendly and the food on our 2 evenings here was very good.

I don't know what to make of this place. One of the owners had died late last year and his wife was away in Namibia so perhaps it was run more casually than before.

The first room we were told how to get to was very much below standard, but when we complained, we were shown room 1 which we were delighted to accept. It had 2 rooms and faced the main road which proved to be very, very noisy all night. But it was better than the first room.

The dinner that evening was a buffet as there was a party of Battlefield tourists staying. We thought it was quite expensive and poorly presented and generally a bit old fashioned.

The town of Dundee has little to offer visitors except for Talana a few Kms away.

I don't think we will stay here again.

we stayed for one night whilst on a battlefield tour. The hotel is adorned with Zulu War (and a little Boer War) memorabilia which gives a lovely atmosphere.

The room i had was spacious with a small walk in wardrobe. rooms wer very clean and had all you needed. Mine was facing the main road and was a little noisy.

The one thing that is missing is airconditioning in the rooms. whilst the rooms did have a ceiling fan it was still a little warm.

The kitchen was good with a lovely evening meal and a good breakfast. There are also a couple of nice courtyards for the smokers - i just hate it when they have to go and stand outside the front door!

The staff were very attentive and efficient. We were well looked after by them.

There is also ample parking behind the hotel.

Great hotel and we will stay again

Room Tip: if you are a light sleeper request a room away from the main road

Stayed for 2 nights as part of our SA tour, staff at reception helped with urgently need medication for my wife without any bother , restuarant staff were just great as was the food, bar was a little quirky. Rooms were as built back in 1886 not quite as comforable as previous residences but boy did it have character , you could almost imagine the British Army officers ( of pre Boar war era) still walking the corridors. Very good base for Isandlwana & Rorke's drift ( Zulu wars), also sadly the Boer war sights such as Spienkop & the siege museum of Ladysmith

Room Tip: The restuarant menu was surprisingly good, do make use of it

Good sized and comfortable room with a huge shower/bathroom. Lounge area and bar were very welcoming with lots of historical information available. Good place to access the Battlefields sites. Parking secure. Small courtyard is a delight with its blend of trees and flowers with nice seating areas to enjoy the peace. Only drawback for us was the coal-fired furnace at the back of the hotel pumped coal dust into the air overnight which was a bit smelly!

Initial contact by email was quick, efficent and effective. Helpful suggestions given willingly which later proved to be invaluable- all this before check in! Travelling with well travelled, family from Durban, they were exceptionally impressed with the all round quality of this establishment as were we. Food was fabulous authentic "pub grub"- plentiful. Bar ambience and hospitality marvellous resulting in many happy, late evenings. The depth of history and historical displays was accurate and had the teacher in the group well prepared for the Battlefields the following day. The Royal is a perfect central venue for this.Laundry, the down side of extensive travel, was quickly done on arrival and again prior to departure. Yes!! Once visited, a certain to be returned to if in the area. Sincere thanks Moaz, Daniel and staff for making our time with you memorable.

Room Tip: Built in the late 1800's rooms are small as an inn was then. Rooms are very clean, decorated to...
