The rooms were fairly basic but when you are Mauritius everything you want is outside. I loved the restaurants. Lunch every day at the navigator overlooking the bays was fantastic and the service was excellent.
We were able to go on a cruise to flat island directly from the hotel and the diving was fantastic.

Room Tip: Try for the deluxe rooms as the standard ones are quite basic.

After two weeks exploring Madagascar and La Reunion by foot, boat, plane and car, we ended our holiday in the Indian Ocaen on this beutiful hotel. We had no other program than relaxing, sunbathing, swimming, eating and drinking. We got all, the staff was exelent, the room was perfect and food was good. Perfect place for us, remember to have "all inklusive". We had our best meals at Navigator Restaurant.

PS: Some of the staff even knew something about Norway ... we was told that the superstar from Manchester United, Ole-Gunnar Solsjær, today is a succesful manager in the Norwegian league. Impressing to know that they are following Norwegian soccer at Mauritius. A taxidriver told us almost the same.

We just got back from a 10 night, half board package at the Canonnier. A Mauritius owned hotel chain that has nothing to envy to international brands. The property is beautiful, with flowers & trees everywhere and with buildings that seem to blend into nature instead of being imposing. The rooms (we had to change during our stay) are modern, minimalistic, very clean & airy with minibar & flat screen TV with cable TV. Bathrooms in superior rooms include separate bathtub & shower (with a huge shower head that feels good after a day under the sea). Breakfast buffet was always well stocked, even if you got there 10 min before closing time. Dinner offers 3 options: themed buffet or 2 restaurants where you have a proposed menu (as well as a choice of dishes for an extra cost) that includes soup, starter, main dish & dessert. Its a great choice if you want to be served and want to get away from the "crowds". One is located next to the buffet, the other has view to the sea.
What I loved about the hotel were three things:
1) the activities offered are done in a very discreet way, no booming music or megaphone beckoning you to join !! Everyday they are posted in the main restaurant & staff will fill you in with details if you are curious or interested in joining in, but no feeling of being "pushed" into it.
2) during our stay there were families, seniors, newlyweds...& it felt like there was a place for everyone. One night some guests were seating next to the pool at 2am talking & laughing loudly, we called the front desk to complain & a couple minutes later, silence reigned once again.
3) the STAFF !!!!!! Everyone you crossed said good morning or good night. Since we stayed 11 days, they knew our names & made it a point to ask how we were enjoying our holiday. All the small complains we had were dealt in a very efficient & quick manner & always with a smile. We saw the manager everyday, walking around, talking with guests & making you feel like you were a VIP guest.
Of course some things were not that great: 7€ for a bland sandwich, served with no side dish like potatoes chips or small salad, is expensive as is the 3€ bottle of water !! And during peak hours, WIFI service was not that great. The price for the cocktails were not that expensive but the presentation were not really spectacular & the servings were a bit on the smail side. Also, it's a shame the restaurant overlooking the sea is not smoke free. (You want to enjoy the tables on the terrace but you are surrounded by smokers...kills the mood !)
Overall, we enjoyed our stay very much and we miss our little corner on the beach were the breeze cools you off & the palm trees offer the right amount of shade !! And before I forget: a big thank you for the delicious chocolate cake the hotel offered us in honor of my bday !!

Room Tip: Try to choose rooms on the second floor (not near service entrance or bar) to be able to sleep with...

We had a fabulous honeymoon at Le Canonnier in September 2013 - we stayed for a week and a half, which we felt was just right. We booked a honeymoon package via Beachcomber.

Our room was a Superior Garden-facing room which was clean and functional, which was all we needed as we were rarely in it. It was ideally located in between the pool and the beach - everything at the hotel was a short walk away, and easy to get to.

We spent a lot of time relaxing - there were always plenty of loungers available, and beach towels available. The food was excellent, with a great variety at the buffet with the theme changing daily. We loved the fact that there was always lots of fresh fruit, tasty desserts and fresh seafood! The all-inclusive wristbands made it easy for staff, and the menus at the restaurants and bar were very clear as to what was included.

The system of booking the other two restaurants was really confusing, however, and we had a couple of problems with bookings not being made even though we'd followed instructions and spoken to staff. I'd recommend not booking these more than a day in advance - but they should come up with a better system.

The staff were all very friendly and helpful, and we booked various treatments at the spa which was absolute bliss! We also enjoyed some of the evening entertainments (although these start quite late, so we didn't go every evening) - the Mauritian dancing was great. Some of the other shows were just ok, but it's easy to come and go as you please at the outdoor stage, so if you find it's not for you, you can leave easily!

We also booked a couple of day trips via the Motaurco rep at the hotel - highly recommended, both for their quality and for getting away from the hotel complex for the day! We also tried out shopping in Grand Baie, which is very easy to get to by taxi, but found the shops a bit lacking in variety.

Overall, the perfect honeymoon destination, and a wonderful relaxing and enjoyable stay!

We had a wonderful time and extended our stay by a day as we couldn't bear to leave! The all inclusive package was a must and worth every penny. We loved everything about this hotel - the staff, service, room, food, beach, pool and bar!!!! We will definitely stay here again.

The staff really made this holiday for us they just couldn't do enough. Any downfall, if there was any is made up for by the staff they are so friendly so helpful and nothing was too much trouble. The food was good and plenty of it. We liked the Navigator for the peace & quiet and the intimate atmosphere. The entertainment was excellent especially the resident band. Thanks to Ajay for arranging our wedding vows renewals ceremony and the girls at the beauty salon. Would we go back again? this is so easy to answer................yes we would. I do agree that you must go all inclusive though. Anyone going to this hotel must try Caco liquour and then please lets us know where you can buy it because we couldn't find any in the shops.

Room Tip: We had a room facing the gardens and ocean and for one night only the honeymoon suite - fantastic

We stayed at Le Canonnier for a week in early October 2013. Our arrival was late at night, but they were there to greet us with cooldrink and a cool towel, transported our bags to our room, and had prepared a special late night supper in one of their restaurants. We took the All Inclusive Package and this is a must at this Beachcomber Hotel.

Positives:
VERY friendly staff, and in fact all of Mauritius can be very proud of their friendly nature. Daily watersports, archery, table tennis, or just lounging by the pool or on the beach with cocktails. A short, cheap bus ride to Grand Bay shopping. Food available all the time, with buffet breakfast, lunch and supper, with sandwiches and pancakes in between. Clean rooms, and if you leave a little tip for your rooom cleaner, he will create awesome animals with your towels. Le Navigator Restaurant is great, with a gourmet set menu over looking the sea, and I would definitely recommend eating here as often as you can.

Negatives:
I would warn against expecting a quiet and secluded getaway at this hotel. As honeymooners, one could probably want a bit more privacy. It is a family hotel, so expect lots of children running around, splashing at the pool. Larger groups of friends etc. We weren't too bothered, but at times it can be annoying. Great if you are a family though. The out of package prices are phenominally expensive. Not just pricey, but rediculous! From South Africa, R120 ($10) for a beer is just rediculous. A plate of food can be R600 ($50) This seems to be the standard at all tourist spots around the island, and I can't see the justification in the exhorbitant prices. Once again, go all inclusive if you're on a budget. Wifi is only available at the lobby and bar. We don't care much for internet while we are on holiday, but one would think Wifi in your room would be standard for a 4 star hotel? The spa treatments are hugely expensive, and having been to Thailand earlier in the year, you can get the same at a hotel in Thailand for a quarter of the price. High prices seems to be a general trend with the other reviewers.

All in all a good experience, and we can't praise the staff enough. My suggestion, go all inclusive, but if you don't want to do that, go bed and breakfast and eat and drink somewhere else, a bit difficult from this hotel, as it is about 5km from Grand Bay, and a bit secluded in this regard. If kids aren't your thing, look elsewhere. If I had to go again as a couple, I would look for more of a boutique hotel, closer to other restuarants and bars to sample the rest the island has to offer.

Room Tip: Sea facing tends to be quiter than rooms overlooking the pool
