We just returned from Rusinga Island, and although we didn't stay with Linda at Wayando Beach club, we got a thorough tour of the property and lodging during one of our several lunch/dinner visits at Wayando. We certainly wished we were staying at this B&B because of how cozy it was compared to our accommodations on the island.
To start off, it's located on a beautiful shore of Lake Victoria overlooking another island. Although swimming in the lake is generally not recommended for foreign travelers, the views are spectacular. There are currently 3 finished Cottages, and another duplex in the works. All equipped with bathroom and shower. All the cottages are built with eco-sustainability in mind to preserve and improve the surrounding areas. The lodging looked very cozy!
Since we were mainly there for lunch and dinner, I have to say the food at this B&B is excellent. The food is prepared following all the appropriate cleanliness standards and we never worried about eating uncooked vegetables here, unlike other places. I am still remembering that wonderful green papaya salad and pineapple cole slaw! Linda provides several pricing options which can include breakfast only or all meals. The food is served at the "bar/restaurant" area and the best part is that there was ice cold beer which is quite rare on the island due to intermittent power availability.
I would definitely recommend this B&B to anybody and will stay there next time we return.
- Official Description (provided by the hotel):
- Wayando Beach Eco Lodge is a Friendly and Intimate Eco Resort on the shores of Lake Victoria. Come rest under the trees or swing in a hammock. We are practicing permaculture and organic gardening and serving our guests wholesome and local meals. Often it is eclectic. Boat tours are easy with our new boat and engine. Guests enjoy bird watching, hiking and cultural exploration. We can organize guided boat excursions for day fishing or night fishing for Omena or to other islands and around Rusinga to look for Hippos. Currently we have four self contained bandas available for guests. In total there are four doubles with large bed each and one single with twin beds for those who want to share a room. An extra bed can be added to two of the bandas for an third person or child. The new banda has a second room with bed. Total of 7 private or semi rooms. Max of 10 to 12 guests. Camping is also available if you want to bring your own tent. We do have several two man tents and available bedding etc. There is room to run so children are welcome. We are relaxed and welcome small groups and families who just want to hang out with the trees and the birds. The water level in the lake has risen incredibly recently so the beach is much eroded. We are hoping the situation on the lake changes back to the way it has been in the past. The bar accommodates about 30 people or more and meals are served buffet or family style. Music is played in the bar but kept low and we have no TV to spoil the tranquility. You are free to chat, dance a bit or play cards or other games that we can supply or you may bring your own. ... more less
