“Rainforest luxury”
Reviewed July 6, 2014

We spent 4 nights here and loved every minute. Our room was overlooking the river and included a large bath on the balcony which felt very luxurious. The buffet style food was excellent; variety, choice, quantity and style of cooking. Service was first class too.

Hedry was our guide each morning and afternoon walking out into the misty rainforest; he had an unerring knack (skill) for spotting Urangatangs and other primates high in the canopy - very thrilling! My only regret was not to see an elephant!

We stayed here for part of our honeymoon and had an amazing time. The lodge is such an unique place with everything thought of, the range of food is great considering how remote it is, the standard of the rooms is also exceptional but you go here for one thing; to be in the rain forest and to go searching for the local wildlife. We were more than happy with the knowledge of our guide and the variation of wildlife we saw including orangutans in their natural environment. Truly amazing to see. Would recommend this place to anyone, a truly special experience!

Room Tip: Go deluxe if you can but the best bit is just being there.

I have recently returned home after having the pleasure of visiting Borneo Rainforest Lodge. It is run like an African safari with organised tours intermixed with rest time. We were particularly lucky to have Faezun as our guide whose expertise combined with patience and a dash of self deprecating humour made our walks informative and fun.

On arrival the guides make it quite clear that unlike an African safari where the animals are plentiful, in the rainforest the pleasure comes from immersing yourself in the environment. I have been on an African safari (and loved it) so I was unsure how I would like just walking through a rainforest (surely I could do that at home) however Faezun was right. If you are prepared to slow down and look around you and then look and listen again you really do begin to appreciate the magic of being in such an ancient forest. We saw orangutans, leopard cat, flying squirrels, red leaf monkey, gibbon, rhinoceros hornbill, monitor lizards and the list goes on. For me though the truely magical time was when we were out in the rainforest at night and the noisy forest is alive with activity around you and you realise that if you were lost out there by yourself - it would be terrifying,

The lodge is aesthetically very pretty without being over the top luxurious. The chalets are well appointed. We stayed in the standard room as that was all they had available but I would suggest staying in the delux. The delux chalets face the river so during rest time in the middle of the day you can sit on your verandah and watch the world go by.

The food is great with a good variety to choose from and the staff are very friendly and helpful.

It is expensive to stay here but it is a real treat.

We finished our Borneo trip with two nights at this lodge. In the middle of the jungle, miles from anywhere it was fantastic. The rooms were lovely (deluxe overlooking the river). From our balcony we spotted a wild orangutan over the river…simply amazing. Staff are very friendly and helpful, meals were buffet but excellent with a great choice for all tastes.

The lodges environmental efforts are good (other lodges should look at introducing some of their measures to save on resources) at the beginning of our trip were were given a water bottle that we could refill anytime at the lodge, simple but effective.

Our guide was very experienced, took us on some lovely walks where we spotted lots of wildlife. The highlight of the stay was seeing nine wild orang-utans over a two day period, something we didn't expect. Our photos are a wonderful remind of a great experience.

Room Tip: Deluxe room 10 was in a great location

Fantastic lodge, amazing food, wonderful forest. Let down by some inexperienced guides who spotted less wildlife than the customers, and didn't share much information about the wildlife. We did see Orang Utans and other animals, thanks to some of the more experienced guides alerting our guide to their location, but a wildlife lodge like this really does need the best guides for the prices they charge. There are researchers following the Orang Utans so you should have a good chance of seeing them in the wild here. Despite the criticism of the guides, we did enjoy our stay here and would recommend, in particular the 3 night package as 2 nights would have felt too short.

Amazing environment, very friendly staff, beautifull jungle trekkings, beautifull main building and the food is really good! Only the rooms are not acceptable for the price we are paying. This lodge is extremely expensive and we expect better rooms. The matras is of poor quality and the size of the bed is not european standards, the bed was also to short. The bathrooms and the furniture in the room are outdated. The balcony has a nice big jacuzzi with beautifull views. The food is all included, but again for the daily rates of this lodge, we think all the drinks need to be included, also alcoholic drinks!
To get there, is a 2 hour ride over winding roads, but luckily in a luxury pickup car. The welcoming at the lodge is very good and also the explanation of the lodge and program is very good. We had the most experienced guide (Denny) on the lodge and he was great! Extremely fanatic in trekking and wildlife spotting. We were very lucky to see all these animals in three days: oerang utan (male and female), gibbons, red leaf monkeys, clouded leopard, civets, deers, mouse deer, snakes, slow loris, leopard cat. Also lots of birds and insects. Thank you Denny!! As advice for future travelers, use good clothes when trekking, its leech paradise in dannum valley and always a posibility of rain. One of the trekkings is going to the viewpoint, this gives after a long hard walk a breathtaking view over the jungle, with the clouds and sun still rising.
This lodge was our best avtivity in Sabah, but expect the fact that it is extremely expensive.

The de-luxe chalets in this lodge are amazing with wonderful views across a river to primary
rain forest. In the restaurant they cater for every nationality to a very high standard. The staff
are very obliging and friendly, and the guides are very flexible. The only outing to avoid is the night watch in an uncomfortable lorry which is so noisy all the wildlife disappear. We spotted an enormous orang-utan close by in the wild on our way back to the airport. He was not best pleased.

Room Tip: Upgrade to a de-luxe chalet
