My husband and I stayed in for 2 nights in October 2012 as part of a 10 day honeymoon. It was such a beautiful place, truly magical. The 2 hour journey through the rainforest to get to the lodge was perhaps one of the most uncomfortable ever, but when we arrived it was worth it instantly. The animals we saw on the way in and during our stay was fantastic. We count ourselves very lucky to have seen as many orangutans as we did, alongside flying squirrels, giant squirrels, other monkeys, snakes, wild boar and bucking deer. The only elusive animals were the pygmy elephants which was a shame.
The food here was outstanding, some of the best we had in Borneo. The staff was so friendly and accommodating - there is also a great friendliness there amongst guests also, with everyone happy to share stories of sightings.
I can't recommend this place enough :o)

Room Tip: Definitely worth upgrading, the balcony bath tub has to be enjoyed by all!

Arrived here after long journey from Tabin wildlife resort, could not believe what we saw on arrival, to say we were in the middle of a primary rainforest the accommodation was amazing, 4-5 star luxury. We were met by staff who unloaded out cases and put garlands of leaves around our necks, we were then taken to a lounge area and served lemon grass iced cold drinks and given cold towels, before being introduce to our guide and taken to our rooms. The rooms/lodges were spacious and well furnished to a high standard, the restaurant was like a top class place with a great array of choices of different foods with a separate cooking station. We had to pay for alcoholic drinks but I can truly recommend the red wine.
Our guide Denny was very knowledgeable and took us on jungle treks, night drives and an awesome canopy walk at 6am, to see the mist rising from the jungle floor when we were high on the canopy was something I will never forget. We spotted many animal including a bull pygmy elephant, various monkeys and birds and a small deer hiding in the undergrowth. The staff could not be more accommodating and helpful. This is definitely a place not to be missed.

Don't think twice, just book the Borneo Rainforest Lodge! I am a travel agent, always looking for off the beaten path, exotic destinations. BRL exceeded my expectations. Having traveled to over 30 countries in my 32 years Borneo is #1 for scenery, weather, relaxation, adventure and people. Look no further!

The Lodge: The standard rooms are just fine if you want to save on money. The only difference is the hot tub on the balcony. I loved Standard #2. We booked the 2n/3d package, which was also very satisfiying. Having hiked Mt. Kinabalu the day prior to arriving at BRL we were exhausted by our 3rd day in the Danum Valley. The beds are hard but the pillows are nice. No A/C but the ceiling fans do the trick. At night it really cools down so you don't need A/C. The food is amazing along with the guides. Mike is the BEST!

Wildlife: Completely satisfied with all our spottings. The guides tell you, "Expect nothing but always hope for something." You have to come into BRL lodge expected nothing. If you do this you most likely get the prize on what you desire to see. We saw orangutans, red tail monkeys, picque monkeys, lizards of all type, lots of insects and birds (Hornbill), flying lemurs and flying squirrels, snakes, leopard cat (on our night drive), Western Terisus (SLOW LORIS)...very rare, Wild Boar,..very rare and 5 elephants on our ride out of the Danum Valley (this is what you desperately hope for).

Tips: I recommend waking up one of the mornings at 6am and trek to the Canopy Walk. This is one of the trails you can do alone. The mist/clouds make for great photos. AND, this is when we saw the Wild Boar in the middle of the road so it could be a good opportunity.
- Bring a light shell jacket or something with a hood on the night drives. The guide will shine a bright light in the trees which attracts insects and they will smash into your face and neck if you don't have a hood on. I felt pretty bad for my boyfriend, lol.
- Bring Vibram 5-finger shoes, or something like this, for one of the days that you trek to a waterfall (they call it the "Jacuzzi Falls"). It's so much more enjoyable to swim with these shoes on than stepping on rocks. Also, they were great for the tubing activity down the Danum River.
- Highly recommend the tubing activity! So much fun!
- Buy the leech socks, bring your own or wear pants that tie around your shoes at the bottoms. Lululemon has a pair for ladies (work to play pants or trek pants). Leech socks are not needed if you have these types of pants.
- Have someone in your group or party buy a nice lense for your camera. If you don't have one of these fancy cameras then you should really think about investing in one. Amazing pic's!

Room Tip: The standard rooms are just fine if you want to save on money. The only difference is the hot tub on the balcony. I loved Standard #2. We booked the 2n/3d package, which was also very satisfiying. The beds are hard but the pillows compensate for being very nice. The shower is amazing!

A hidden gem. Well worth the effort and the cost to get to and stay at BRL.
Highly recommended.
Excellent location, food, guides, lodge staff - exceeded our expectations in every chapter. Not sure why LP review is so hesitant, we had a terrific time and thought it was a great overall jungle experience. And a great place to see orangutans in the wild (a TV crew was there to film a documentary on them).

We had an excellent ‘deluxe’ chalet overlooking the river, with excellent views from the veranda (which included a spa bath). The chalets are well furnished, are comfortable, and have a great bathroom, with an excellent shower. As expected no air conditioning (all the power is locally generated) but this is a close as you get to 5 star accommodation in the Jungle.

The food (unless very quiet it is all buffet style) is absolutely superb, mostly Malay style, but wonderful, you will not be disappointed.

The staff are very friendly and attentive. Services work really well, they even meet you with dry towels after wet jungle treks, and cold towels if hot ! They will dry clothes free of charge, if you come back soaked after a tropical downpour.

Bar prices are low, 12RM for a Tiger beer, which is very good for a lodge of this quality and remoteness in primary rainforest jungle.

The wifi in the bar area is free, and works fine, but can be slow as it is via satellite. There is no mobile phone coverage in this location.

This lodge may be expensive, but it is worth it, we had 3 nights there, which is about right, and allows you to do most of the usual treks. The Lodge has its own guides, and ours was excellent, friendly, had good English, and was very knowledgeable. It’s not the easiest place to see wild animals, as the forest canopy is so thick, and some persistence is required; but the treks are great anyway, and the height of the trees in the primary rain forest has to be seen to be believed. Tip - You need proper waterproof walking boots, leech socks, and insect proof long sleeve shirts on the treks. After rain the leeches abound, and of course it rains most afternoons. The guided treks are generally timed for mornings, and dusk/evening, but you are permitted to walk out on the easier trails without a guide.

The only minor downside we found is that the solar powered hot water can be limited if the people in the neighbouring chalet run a spa bath (as the solar system is shared), and the top up electrical heating takes ages to reheat from scratch.
