This was our second visit to Tutka Bay. The location is fabulous. When we arrived a Bald Eagle circled over us and landed on a nearby tree. We were greeted like dear friends and treated as such for our entire stay. The food was fabulous with great attention paid to presetation whether it was a sack lunch or a wonderful dinner. If you want pretentious this is not the place. If you want to be see this portion of Alaska and be very well taken care of then you won't be dissappointed.

  • Liked — The location and warm hospitality of the owners.
  • Disliked — It is fairly remote.

Our family, including 2 teenage grandsons have just returned from the lodge. From the time Jon met us on the dock the hospitality was wonderful I felt like we had been welcomed to their home and in reality we were. The staff was so friendly and informative about their past diverse travel experiences.
The food was excellent and the anticipation what the next meal or bag lunch included was fun. The day we brought home halibut and black bass, Nelda and her chef staff prepared the fish 4 different ways so we and the guests could enjoy the fish.
The "Oystercatcher" lodge met our needs and the boys even had the "man Cave", the loft upstairs. What a joy to sit in the hot tub after a hike or fishing trip, look up at the snow capped mountains and watch the eagles soar. Nelda was a wealth of information, whether you asked her about baskets or the Indian culture.
Even on the water taxi back to Homer the captain took the time to show us the family of otters and turned the boat around so we could see a whale.
The visit at the lodge will always be one of our fondest memories and I feel that was due to all the comfortable surroundings that Jon and Nelda have provided.

We spent 4 days at Tutka Bay. The owners truly make you feel part of the family. They have scheduled meals that are awesome ! ..and you get to meet and dine with the other interesting guests at mealtime.
One day we flew 300 miles to Katmai to watch the bears at Brooks falls (pricey, but unforgetable - must do !)The plane picked us up at our front door ! We kayaked one day near the lodge - Jon dropped us off and picked us back up later - In September it rains quite a bit and it did that day too but we saw several whales from a distance and had another really great time. Great Hot tub at the lodge on this really enormous deck that they built. No TV, phone, and that was nice. We stayed in the Eagles Nest (their largest cabin - cool view of the inlet and mountains across the inlet - lots of eagles and otters. There is a neat little path on their "island" that can be walked in about 45 minutes. Highlights are the Owners, Sidetrips, Hottub, Excellent Meals (like fancy restaurant - family style - in a nice setting)

Similar to another reviewer, we stayed at Tutka Bay Wilderness Lodge for 3 nights at the end of a 2-week Alaska vacation. I am a picky traveler when it comes to hotels and I couldn't find ANYTHING to fault. The proprietors make you feel like you're a guest in their home. Nelda is a superb cook and uses a lot of local, fresh fish. If you love salmon and halibut, this is your place! It's true that the small peninsula on which the lodge sits can be confining for avid hikers. We did some guided kayaking (for which there is an additional charge) and we got dropped across the bay so we could hike in the state park (for which there is NOT an additional charge). The lodge is expensive but, considering the quality of both the lodging and the meals, worth every penny.

We ended a two week trip in Alaska with 3 nights of heaven at Tutka Bay. The cabins are fantastic and the owners are wonderful. You feel like you truly get away from it all. The setting is stunningly beautiful - sitting in the hot tub overlooking Tutka Bay is bliss. The food was also to die for. The only downside is that you are somewhat confined to a relatively small area -- there is a wonderful 30 minute hike around the grounds on which we saw many bald eagles, but that is the only place you can walk. Otherwise we took a fantastic kayaking excursion one day. You need to be willing to either just completely relax on the amazing deck and take small walks or do some of the paid excursions.

Wonderful wilderness lodge across the bay from "civilization".(no roads=no cars) Comfortable rustic cabins, delicious gourmet food, and a hostess/owner who is dedicated to provide you with a wonderful Alaska experience.

Guided kayak trips, fishing trips, hiking, lots of marine life and large variety of birds and wildflowers and berries. The hostess generously shares her excellent knowledge of Alaska, and there are books and videos in the comfortable parlor area to learn more about the area.

Sitting in the hot-tub and watching the bay is heaven.

Just one tiny comment - the cabins need a bit of redecorating.
