Beach Hideaway
Reviewed February 5, 2009

The Beach Hideaway is located just south of Barrytown. The accommodations are nice—a cottage with a living room, full kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom. The bedroom is very small (just large enough to fit the bed), and therefore not much room to fit the luggage. The biggest disappointment was that the beach was located so far from the cottage. From the glass windows of the cottage, we could see a very distant view of the ocean -- the beach is about a third of a mile from the cottage. The beach is not easily accessible because there a chain linked fence between the cottage and ocean—our neighbors in the other cottage could not find their way to the beach. The name is misleading--- Because the place was called “Beach Hideaway,” we expected the beach to be much closer than a third of a mile. Additionally, the place is overpriced compared to other places we stayed near the ocean in New Zealand. Overall, accommodations were nice. However, the beach is very remote and you can stay at much nicer places near the ocean for a lower price in New Zealand. If you are looking for a place near the ocean, you may be disappointed.

We would like to clarify some of the points raised in the above review.
All bedrooms at Beach Hideaway have Super King size beds with adequate room to move around, we also provide raised luggage storage areas with draws under in every room with wardrobes and hanging space also provided.
The distance that the cottages are from the beach can be clearly seen from the photos provided on our website, (approx 5 min walk).
We now have very detailed maps showing exactly how to get to the beach, located in each unit.
(we are always available by free phone provided at cottages for any questions or help)
Our name "Beach Hideaway" refers to it being hidden in a secluded area of bush with open ocean views. The beaches located around Barrytown, and indeed all of the West Coast beaches are considered remote and are sought out for this unique quality in an ever busy world.

Blink and you'll miss Barrytown. Beach Hideaway is a fantastic place to stay though and in a much prettier location than anything in nearby Greymouth. The grounds are immaculately kept by the owners and there is a very nice 10 min. walk down to a deserted beach (although you can actually see the beach from the cottages). The cottages are also beautifully kept and decorated inside. You can see a real pride of ownership present. Breakfast is great too, so order it ahead of time.

We had two nights at the Beach hideway late February and really enjoyed the experience.
It is located within walking distance to a beach and made a perfect spot from which to explore further north and south along the coast.
The rooms were extremely clean and well furnished. The view lovely.
The continental breakfast was huge with enough bread to make sandwiches and enough cereal for the following day.
And then there was the 'Cedar hot Tub'.
I have no hesitation recommending this property.

We bowled up here on the most miserable grey rainy day of our holiday but the weather soon became irrelevant. This was a wonderful place to stay. The cabin was really well equiped, clean and extremely comfortable. Just wished we could have stayed longer!!!

Our family of 4 stayed in the 2 bedroom cottage for 2 nights during our 3 week trip to New Zealand. The property was immaculate and cozy with a delicious breakfast. We liked being away from it all and felt truly like we'd found a diamond on the rough west coast!

The place is actually located north of Greymouth within striking distance of the Punakaiki rocks area...great for a day trip. We also did some funky bone carving nearby and enjoyed a few short hikes (short because we have two young kids...we could have walked a lot farther along beautiful rivers and rugged beaches).

Our kids loved the hot tub, and the little paths on the property. Only bummer was that there was no access to the beach from the property when we visited. A locked paddock blocked us. The owners are working to fix that for the future.

I discovered this property on the internet - looking for something a little more intimate on the West Coast. This property is certainly that. There are two units there, and I booked the two bedroom chalet, which is fully self contained and like a home away from home. The views are magnificent, and the service was outstanding. The owners went out of their way to make my weekend memorable, and nothing was a problem. I had a bottle of bubbly and large antipasto platter waiting on arrival, and they even took time out of their day to pop in personally and say hi. There is a petanque court, and large fire pit (where you can toast your marshmallows), but the highlight had to be the intimate cedar hot tub. When we stayed there was no one else there, so we had the whole place to ourselves and watched the sunset into the sea from the tub, something we will not be forgetting for quite a while. This is a wonderful property for getting away from the crowds, and enjoying the beautiful scenery and laid back lifestyle the West Coast has to offer. Will definitely be back!

We stayed at here also in Nov 2006. I agree it was the most beautiful, relaxing and fabulous accomadation we had in our 19 nights of travelling New Zealand. Secluded, peaceful, stunning scenery, fresh clean sea air, immaculate cottages. We struggled to leave. Had we known about it being as special as it is, we would have booked 3-4 nights there. The hosts (Heather and Dave) were nothing short of fabulous. DO NOT seriously go past this one. Thankyou again Heather and Dave.
