Owner description: Golden Sands Horse and Wagon Tours offers you the opportunity to travel in the footsteps of the early pioneers, down one of New Zealand’s most beautiful, unspoiled wild West Coast beaches. On the way, learn about our rich ‘Coast Road’ gold mining and pioneer heritage as if you were a part of it yourself. The pace is relaxed, with plenty of time for exploring. Activities include gem stone collecting, (Barrytown beach is the best jade hunting beach in NZ), making damper bread, boiling the billy over an open fire, wildlife spotting and photography.

“Fantastic afternoon! Our kids loved it!”
Reviewed December 27, 2013 via mobile

We had a great afternoon with horse Murphy and dog Pearl. Our kids, aged 8, 6 and 3 were so excited. They could not stop asking questions about the horse and wagon. Making their own bread on the campfire was a real highlight as well. This activity is highly recommended by us!

“The best day of our holiday!”
Reviewed December 24, 2013

A walk with Murphy a magnificent Clydesdale horse drawn cart, Pearl the dog and Sophie down to the beach and along smooth sands listening to the history of gold prospectors along this lonely coastline. Then while Sophie started a fire to boil water, we met some prospectors who showed us how they panned for gold. We searched for jade in the water then gathered round the fire sitting on logs drinking tea in billy cans and baking our own bread. Stuffed it with jam and ate it hot by the fire listening to their stories. Absolutely heavenly.

“Authentic West Coast Experience”
Reviewed March 31, 2013

This was an absolute highlight of our family get together. Sophie was a fantastic guide with a wealth of knowledge of local history and interesting yarns. We all loved the damper cooked on the fire along the beach; the kids loved toasting marshmallows too. A cup of tea has never tasted so good as sitting round the toasty fire, looking at the sun setting and the weather front coming! Murphy the horse and Pearl the dog were absolutely charming. We had 3 generations aboard the wagon - a special experience we will never forget.

“Relaxing and Informative Beach Excursion”
Reviewed February 6, 2013

Husband and I went with another couple who run a homestay on the south side of Greymouth and who wanted to do the trip to assess if it was good value for money so they could recommend to their guests. It was a cloudy day but we still saw enough of the scenery to appreciate the beauty. Murphy is a very well behaved horse and gave us a very pleasant ride enhanced by owner Sophie's commentary on the history of the area--former gold mining territory. It was great to cook our own dampers on a camp fire, have billy tea and enjoy the peace and quiet of this almost people less beach. The group made a few suggestions to Sophie which we know she is following up such as having some step arrangement to make it easier for older, less able people to get in the wagon and to consider a family concession when pricing her tourist adventure. The 4 of us decided we were very happy to recommend this attraction to friends and homestay clients. It is tide and weather dependent so phone first to ensure the time is right to make this trip. A car is needed to get to the start.
