“The only honest place we stayed in during our outback trip”
Reviewed August 29, 2013

We were afraid the trip from Kings Canyon to Alice Springs through sealed roads was too long to be done in ne day, so we decided to sleep in Erldunda Desert oaks resort. It is located in the crossroads of Stuart & Lasseter highways.

The rooms were clean and strangely similar to the ones we had stayed in at Uluru and Kings Canyon (only here we paid half the price). Their restaurant is ok, good breakfast and snacks. We enjoyed their swimming pool, it is the best way to cool down after a long drive in the outback.

Ok, your are in the middle of nothing, and the very good review is not about the room of the motel, neither the bar/resto or the amenities, but to the fact this place fit perfectly in the trip.
We decide (my partner and me) to visit Uluru, so to enjoy it the best we plan to fly to Alice springs and then drive to Uluru with one night stop in Erldunda end one after in yulara before to leave from Yulara airport.
What to say about the place: had everything you need after a long drive, before another long drive, and if you see as it is will be probably the most funny part of your journey, even more then the 5* we stay the next night.
Ok the place is a little creepy, wall and floor made strange noise, but is clean enough, the staff is really "Friendly" or at least they try to be... and you will keep forever the picture of this place.
Oh.. The food was Ok and the beer cold.

The motel room had everything one would need, though the walls were thin enough that I could hear the bloke in the room next door scratching his posterior in bed. I didn't mind so much because we had our screaming infant in tow. The swimming pool would have been a welcome relief in the summer, but in July it was just a large plastic bucket full of icy water.

The bar was something else - a very competent and customer-focused manager called Jewel looked after us really well, and had an obvious banter with the regulars. (Though I have no idea who the regulars were, since there didn't seem to be anything at all for hundreds of kilometres in any direction.) The roast was tasty enough and reasonably priced. The sign on the door warns that persons without shoes, shirts or those of an unacceptable level of personal hygiene will not be admitted; I worried that I would be thrown out because I sometimes forget to wash my hands after going to the bathroom, but apparently that's not what they meant.

If you're heading to Uluru from far away - say, Coober Pedy - it's worth stopping here, then making the drive in the morning, staying there one night so you can get two full days in the park and only pay for one night of overpriced accommodation in Ayer's Rock Resort.

I spent one night here in a powered campground site after returning from Kings Canyon. The facilities are decent. Bathrooms are clean (and free), there's some grass & trees near all the camp sites, and the (not free) wifi worked relatively well. Definitely not the worst place to stay if you're driving through the area.

After leaving Coober Pedy, Erldunda was a great location for an overnight stop. Some 500klms from Coober Pedy it was just that bit too far to make it to Uluru in one day. Further down the road was Kulgera but we have heard a few people looking at the facilities and making the 75klm trek further to Erldunda. Well worth the extra Klms.

Check in was efficient, and we stayed one night as a large group on 5 sites. Be warned - choose a site right down the back of the park, or else hear the generator run all night! Grassy sites, clean amenities (but they really need some refurbishment). Contrary to another reviewer, the roast of the day meal offered via discount coupon at reception was poor. It was a tiny meal, with curried flavoured potatoes not suitable for little kids. Bar prices way too high (it's down the road from Alice Springs!). We had cheaper drinks in the middle of the Birdsville Track at Mungerannie Pub in the middle of nowhere! The Irish bar attendant was most helpful (and on his own) - thanks for your service.

Room Tip: down the back if camping to get away from constant generator noise.

Our expectations of this motel were not high. Located at the junction of the Sturt Highway and Lasseter Highway, it is the turn off to Uluru, Kata Tjuta, Kings Canyon and other wild places.

The motel type accommodation is formed from interconnected demountable buildings roofed and clad to a high standard. Anyone who has stayed on a mine camp will recognize the comfortable, but not flash, layouts of each room.

This demountable construction is the only really practical way to establish comfortable housing in remote areas, given the horrendous cost of bringing tradies to site - the nearest large town is Alice Springs and many items have to come from Adelaide, about 1350km and two days away, making both construction and maintenance costs prohibitive.

One down side to the demountable construction is that the floors can be uneven and creaky. Walls are also less soundproofed than a conventional building so you need to respect your neighbours.

Beds were extremely comfortable and rooms well heated with reverse cycle air conditioners (outback days are warm but nights frosty during winter).

Bathrooms are a little basic and you need to conserve water carefully, as with anywhere in the Australian Outback. All water on site comes from three bores, up to 20km away and is highly mineralised. There are generous quantities of drinking water in a kettle and jug located in the refrigerator. If you need more, you will need either your own supplies (which anyone travelling in this area must carry, for their own and other's safety) or buy from the on-site store.

Food in the tavern is excellent with generous portion sizes. Others have commented on pricing, but given costs of transport to this remote site, I consider the prices fair.

Overall, an unexpectedly pleasant motel stay.

Room Tip: In general, try to stay some distance from the generators. They are not intrusive and provide some w...
