“Antiques, Art....and a Room Too”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 29, 2005

Almost every article about Iles des Saintes points to L'Auberge les Petits Saints aux Anacardiers as THE place to stay on Terre de Haut. It IS unique and I would even say wonderful, but travelers should go in knowing that staying here is (to quote a co-traveler) like sleeping in a bric-a-brac shop. There is so much furniture and so many objets d'art crammed everywhere, that it can be hard to wind your way to and around your room. Everything has a price tag on it and we learned from our friends who stayed at the (lovely) pool all day, that shoppers had been shown through our room while we were out. (I admit I was tempted to put a sticker on some underwear hanging to dry to see what happened...) Coming from a spacious, airy room on Guadeloupe, the four of us traveling together all felt a bit claustrophobic upon arrival and secretly wondered if we could "tough out" 4 nights. Happily, we all admitted that the place grew on us once we settled in. Beds (which took up most of the rooms) were very comfortable and the air conditioning functioned very well. The small bathrooms had ample hot water and pressure. The table d'hote dinners were creative and delicious--real highlights. The restaurant was closed Sunday and Monday nights and did not serve lunch, but town is a short (steep) walk to multiple options. Breakfast consisted of juice, baguettes, choice of hot beverage, and a homemade fruit confiture. Sometimes an additional sweet baked good was offered, but no fresh fruit was served--something we crave in the tropics. All in all, I would be more than happy to return and there would be many people I would recommend this inn to, but it is not for everyone. To their credit, the inn posts a notice that asks you to tell them if you are unhappy and they will find you another accommodation, because vacation is too important.

My husband and I just returned from a week's trip to Guadeloupe and although we did not stay at Les Petite Saints, we had a delicious dinner at the hotel. The property is located in the Terre de Haute area of Les Saints (which is a beautiful island) and located a few blocks up from the main part of town. The dining area was nicely decorated and also included an outside deck. The seating was comfortable and the dinner menu for the evening included a delicious chef offering of accras (fritters), a salmon cerviche, excellent gazpacho, and grilled dorade (mahi mahi) with wonderful cumin/curry seasoning. The meal was creative and nicely presented. The one negative was that the service, including the initial welcome to the hotel/dining, was aloof at best, especially by one of the gentleman proprieters. Although this did not ultimately impact our overall experience, it was a bit disapointing/surprising as this property receives high marks in several reviews (including Routards and Geo Guide).
