Providing that you accept the Highlander for what it is, which is a good quality honest 2* hotel deservedly popular with coach parties, then you will not be disappointed. From the moment we checked in (with a complimentary glass of mulled wine) to the time we left all of the staff without exception were very friendly and helpful. The restaurant service was excellent, as was the choice and quality of the food and would put many more expensive hotels to shame. Our only disappointment was that on a couple of mornings the breakfasts could have been hotter however. Our room was quite basically furnished but had everything that we required and most importantly was spotlessly clean and warm, as was the whole hotel. Value for money was brilliant, working out at £28 per person per night for bed, breakfast and three course evening meal through Easybreaks, with a four course meal and entertainment thrown in on one night. One of the best hotels we have stayed in - highly recommended.

I know this hotel only has 2 stars but the friendly service and comfortable surroundings deserve more. This was our second visit.

Greeted by staff who were helpful, particularly because we had arrived well before we could expect the room to be ready.

The hotel has been decorated for Christmas and we enjoyed sitting in the comfortable lounge, reading Sunday papers and enjoying a nice cuppa. Dinner was good.

We chatted with other guests, several of whom seemed to also be repeat visitors.

You couldn't class this hotel as 'posh' or 'upmarket' but rather 'comfortable', 'homely' and 'welcoming' in a truly highland manner.

The Highlander Hotel is not a posh, luxurious hotel, but it's a clean, comfortable, friendly hotel with a lovely atmosphere & in a fantastic location.

We have just returned from a lovely two-night stay at The Highlander, and are already looking forward to returning. There were two coach parties staying at the hotel at the same time, but despite this, we still felt we were given as much attention as was required. The jam-packed dining room was atmospheric, and there was never a long wait for our food or our drinks.

We did have a problem during our stay, but it was dealt with very well: The room above ours on our first night had very, very squeaky floorboards & the guests above us seemed to be pacing around their room from 6am! We spoke to reception & asked for their advice, and we were immediately given another, much quieter room. The staff even moved all our luggage for us.

Another little thing, was that I left my mobile phone charger in our room, by mistake, but received it in the post two days later.

This hotel is a great example of how friendly, efficient staff can be the making of a good holiday!

I was in a party of 12, everyone was full of praise for the excellent standard of food and service. Yes, it may need moderised but it was very clean and comfortable and extreamly good value for money. We are all definately going back again and taking more people with us.
I have no hesitation in recommending this hotel.

Not glamourous but lovely flowers and foliage make up for dated decor. Rooms are comfy though basic. Food is stodgy, slapped on to the plates, tasty and mainly fresh, choice of sweets displayed on a trolley, far too sweet and creamy, fresh fruit features only as garnish. Friendly staff, clad in tartan, try hard and were super efficient in the dining room. The tiny community of Newtonmore is worth exploring, hotel is on the main road but a little away from shops, check out the small loch and nature reserve opposite the hotel. Reasonable for large parties or as a last minute option if you can get a good price, for one night only, if you're using Newtonmore as a base there are more charming options.

Suited more to coach parties as during the day the place is deserted and seems to be more of a base. Dining is a bit Regimental as you have to dine at 7.30 and have a set menu each night 3 courses for £18 which is good value but not for us as being on a break we like to have a bit of a timescale to eat and we might want to order a steak or something different. The hotel offers good value as a B&B with no frills and a comfy bed with a nice breakfast. The staff seems to be in short supply during the day and we had a 10 minute wait for a receptionist when we arrived also couldn't get a drink on return from another hotel at 11.30pm, so seemed a bit early for the bar to close.
