Don't be put off by the 70's appearance. We stayed one night on our way north. Excellent room, bathroom and breakfast - what more could you want. The restaurant was full on the Saturday night but the receptionist recommended an excellent nearby alternative.

This was a group visit for skiing at nearby Cairngorm Mountain and as we unloaded the coach one of the staff was on hand to give us keys and thus by-pass the need to even check-in - good start!

We were based in the block opposite the hotel entrance - the very short distance covered by a canopy so no need to get wet if it’s raining.

The rooms on arrival were heated to sub-tropical temperatures and in our case we just turned the heater off prior to heading to the bar for drinks. By the time we got back it was fine and we were able to adjust it for a more comfortable overnight setting.

Our bedroom had decent space, two single beds pushed together to form a double, plenty of storage space and an ensuite bathroom. The bathroom although quite roomy only had a small stand alone cabin-style shower with a ridiculous lack of water pressure. Those who have above average build and enjoy a power shower (or bath) will be disappointed. Television had very limited channel options. Tea/coffee making facilities and biscuits are provided.

The hotel has seen some refurbishment since we previously visited - gone are the heavily patterned carpets in the reception and residents lounge, together with the motley collection of furnishings in the latter giving the public areas a more acceptable look. The bar was comfortable and as a group we created our own atmosphere which otherwise may have been lacking - the staff were friendly and efficient. We were able to purchase wine by the bottle and keep some (not much in practice!) for our second night.

Meals at the hotel are served in a separate large dining room at the front of the main building. Tables are set for groups of around six people or less and our group were therefore spread out more than normal. There was a choice of 3 or 4 items per course for the evening meal which would cover most tastes and the wine list was reasonable. I had haggis fritters for starters which were very good and a nicely cooked piece of salmon for mains. Dessert, still from the famous trolley, was also good. Service was good - possibly helped by the smaller groupings. The only aspect which wasn’t so well received was the background entertainment where a guy played the accordion whilst we ate - a bit distracting and unnecessary in my view although appreciated it appears by some other guests.

Breakfast in the same room was made to order which is always a good option I believe but the quality of some items was average - again service was fine.

Overall a very good value budget hotel - not one to shortlist if you’re doing a long-awaited luxury tour of the Highlands - more the practical stop-off place. As far as ratings go - four for value for money, three overall.

Newtonmore is a quiet place and at the opposite end of the long main road we found a reasonably smart pub for evening drinks on our second night. The town had its Christmas lights on during our stay and presumably keeps them up during the ski season which is a nice touch.

Thank you for taking the time to post your comments. Many hotels now use what are classed as 'zip & link' beds giving us flexibility to offer guests twin or double beds. You will be pleased to hear that the first phase of bathrooms are currently undergoing major refurbishment. Hope to see you again in the future.

Back from two nights waking using the Highlander. First time there. Bedrooms turned out to be twins though a single had been reserved. Clean, tidy, with a really comfy bed. albeit with a heavier duvet than I am used to. Those with thinner blood would appreciate that in cooler weather. Some toilets had old coloured suits. Shower cabinet had curtain on glazed fireclay base. Mixer tap not thermostatically regulated but setting found quickly and abundant hot water at any time. Electric panel radiators which heated room up very quickly Great for returning after a day in the hills!

Food was consistently good and plentiful. Bar prices were reasonable for spirits but £1.60 for a tiny mixer is pushing it a bit!! Sweet trolley was scrumptious!!!!!

Plenty of parking. Very near all the main attractions of the Cairngorms, without paying Aviemore prices. Rack Rate seemed high, but then they all are! Shop about for a deal and they are there at this time of the year.

Well organised place throughout.

Room Tip: Had room a front on main road. No problems with traffic noise as main A9 miles away, and hotel is o...

Many thanks for your review - you will be pleased to hear that we are phasing out our coloured bathroom suites. The first phase of bathroom refurbishment is well under way so hopefully the next time you stay with us you will see the difference.

4th visit through 5pm deal and the hotel gets better each time.

It's not fancy but it is a clean, warm and welcoming hotel where the staff are always willing to help.

The food is wholesome and really well done, whilst the service really is excellent. The highlight is definetly the sweet trolley.

Would recommend that you give it a try as a much cheaper option than being in Aviemore but still within easy each of all the local attractions.

We stayed here at the end of january for two nights 30th/31st. The staff where brilliant, incredibly helpful and accomadating to our needs! Food was excellent along with the hotel bar, chef did an excellent job serving us bar meals earlier than the evening meal as we wanted to head off to aviemore, also kept breakfast running longer so we could get everyone up the next day! Regards The welsh lads.

Many thanks for posting your review. I am very lucky to have an excellent team of staff here at the hotel many of whom have worked with me for a considerable time. This adds to the ambience and is of particular benefit when we get repeat business as guests know the staff and can interact with them straight away. We look forward to welcoming you again.

We stayed one night in this hotel on an impromptu ski weekend. It's in a really useful location just off the A9 and you can be at Cairngorm (20mins), Nevis (1hr), or the Lecht (1hr) pretty easily. If the weather is unpredictable as it was with us, this choice comes in very useful!

What makes the hotel are the staff. We were greeted by the guy on reception - very friendly and explained where our room was straight away. Explained also that their restaurant was fully booked that night but recommended a place nearby and made a reservation for us - calling up to our room to confirm.

The hotel is 3*, and was everything we expected at this rating. I note others reviewing this establishment seem to have somewhat higher expectations; I would suggest that perhaps they are looking at the wrong rating and should be trying elsewhere! It was clean and for somewhere that was described by others as 'tired' I was actually pleasantly surprised by the quality of the décor in our room.

Perhaps the only downside is the soundproofing isn't that great and you may hear the occupants of the neighbouring room moving about/talking - but there were no wild parties or anything to cause major issue when we stayed. Also the hot water in the shower takes a couple of minutes to come through - but be patient and it will do eventually!

Breakfast was fine with a cold buffet and cooked to order hot breakfast. We turned up 15 minutes earlier than the scheduled start of breakfast, but they were still happy to serve us - again, brilliant service.

All in all we were really pleased and will certainly visit again.

Booked this weekend last last minute when we called they were very helpful. Arrived to be greeted by friendly staff. Room very clean and warm, shower a bit small and needed updated. Food was excellent good size portions no complaints there. Lounge was very warm but you could turn the radiators down if you wanted. Staff are very very friendly and nothing was a problem when helping you. Car park had pot holes but if you drive carefully it is not a problem.
Yes I would return again and recommend this hotel.

Thank you for posting your review - glad you enjoyed your short stay with us. For your information we are in the process of getting the first phase of a 3 phase bathroom refurb done. Our pothole problem is an ongoing process, we fill, delivery van drive in, heavy rain hits, filling is then washed out. As you can appreciate the cost of resurfacing such an area would be astronomical and at the present time the bathrooms were the favoured choice for investment.
