“Amazing experience!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 25, 2014

Stayed there as a large group taking the self catering experience. everything was made available to us and the owner was very helpful and very quickly resolved any minor issues that we had. Rooms were spacious and the house was overall well equipped with everything that we would need, minus food and drink. Within good distance of fort william. Helped to make a very good stay in Scotland.

What can I say, not sure what the previous review is all about! We happen to have been at this hotel when the wedding party stayed and I must say, there is nothing bad to comment on. OK, so they lost their chef. We knew that and we were staying on a B & B basis because Neil, the owner, phoned us and gave us the option of a full refund but we wanted to stay nonetheless. Thank God we did! This place is amazing, great setting, great hotel and owners are not in your face, just there when you need them to be. Bar was open and we had a great time sipping on some whiskey. Staff seemed to now their roles well and could not be faulted. Overall a very nice experience and good on you for Self Catering. This place will make a fantastic self catering house. We are already planning to stay next year with our extended family. Cant wait

Got a call from the owner Neil to let us know the chef had left, Now I know why!!!! We couldn't wait to leave either. You cannot fault the Staff, they were helpful especially Anne the Housekeeper and Stephanie the barmaid/chef/waitress/general everything. The owners were no where to be seen, oh apart from when he took the Glory for serving a champagne breakfast to our party ( which someone else paid for). No real apology for what happened with the chef, just told that we could have full refund, sounded like they just really couldn't be bothered!!!! Found out while we were there that they are closing the hotel and making it into a self catering place, it should work as it basically was when we were there!!!!

Bar closes any time between 8pm and 8.30pm, also to the point that some of our party arriving back to the hotel at 8.15pm seeing bar open, going upstairs to change and ta-da bar closed when arrived back downstairs. Shame, as the Beer was good and well priced. Going out of their way to in-hospitable me thinks.

The waitress and her partner had to make breakfast for the guest in the morning, and I have to say they did a fine job , but on 2nd morning they didn't think they had enough milk to go around, keeping in mind that this was a wedding party they were catering for, who had booked well in advance!!! No Croissants, the owner forgot to take them out the freezer and no beans for the children.

The rooms are lovely, well decorated and very clean, thanks to the wonderful Housekeeper Anne, and clean towels each day. Apart from the morning of the wedding we never saw the owner again, I say owner, as apparently he runs it with his wife but she seems to also be invisible. Not good for a country hotel, not interested in people's comfort, but enjoy taking peoples money.

Very sad as its in a beautiful spot with some lovely church ruins and people would really enjoy staying here. Would I hire this for a self catering holiay, not on your nelly. Wouldn't give him the money.

Room Tip: Here's a tip, stay at another Hotel!!! Newtonmore is just down the road.

Just back from a week staying in a self catering cottage in Laggan. We had several meals (and one overnight stay) in The Monarch Hotel during our stay and the experience was a breath of fresh air. The hotel and ruin are in a beautiful, romantic location and the food was excellent (we had 3 lunches and two dinners!) but it is the wonderfully warm hosts Annie and Neil who make the place unforgettable...these lovely Aussies know how to host!

They are changing the business to a self catering proposition and while I am gutted not to be able to 'drop in' for a meal when I'm in Laggan it is a fabulous and unique venue for special family get-togethers, business events or weddings...I have it noted for my 'big birthday' next year!

Really special place in an excellent spot for sightseeing, walks and mountain biking owned by a highly professional and utterly smashing couple.

The food was good, waiting on staff very good, drinks very overpriced and served in inappropriate glasses and no lemon for a G&T! (cucumber was offered from kitchen). Proprietor inflexible, surly and made "Basil Fawlty" look positively professional. Bar was shut before 10.00 whilst customers were still in the lounge giving the feeling that you have overstayed your welcome. It was noted that a large party of French guests checking in at 7.30pm was considered to be major inconvenience and annoyance to the host. We were staggered by his reaction. We were up visiting for recreational purposes and visit the area regularly but found that local feed back was less than favourable. The hotel seems to be known for all the wrong reasons. The most unwelcoming host we have ever come across in an hotel and would certainly never ever go back. The work carried out on the hotel was refreshing but a shame that the same cannot be said for the host and hostess.

Pre dinner drinks a real disappointment at a costly price...Gin & Tonic in a tumbler!! (the kind you would put your teeth in....) without the lemon, had to ask for lemon, bar lady said she could give me her last piece, two beers and a white wine spritzer all for a expensive cost of £20+..Decided not to eat..food over priced for location..

We booked two rooms here as we were touring the area with my daughter. The rooms were spacious and comfortable and the bed was perfect, so slept well. We had a dinner in the hotel's restaurant and this was excellent, we all had different mains and it was of a very high standard, followed by another fulfilling meal in the morning- cooked breakfast with continental if you preferred that. Lovely Aussie owners and nice staff. Highly recommended.
