“Great Couples Retreat”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 7, 2014

We spent a night at this charming wee family run hotel, lovely room nice and clean - homely atmosphere and made to feel very welcome by the owners.
Enjoyed the beautiful scenery and played golf on the next door Golf course which was magic.
Relaxed in the hotel lounge in the evening in front of the fire and a great cooked breakfast in the morning. Lots to do nearby - walking, golf, birdwatching etc
This is a great wee escape for couples, peaceful, very friendly owners, warm charming hotel and terrific value for money - a real treat !!

We spent 2 nights at the Craigerne House Hotel in March 2014, and although the house is a lovely place in a great location we felt it lacked a bit in the attention to detail.
We were greeted by Dougie, the owner, who was very pleasant throughout the stay, however we feel that perhaps we had the least pleasant room in the House.
We had room 4 which has is a good sized room with a faux four poster bed and views to the front of the property, however the first thing that is noticed is that the double glazed unit has "blown" and as a consequence has moisture within the panes detracting from the appearance of the room. It also had a old, small CRT television set, which did not in fact work as apparently, according to a sign in the lounge, the ariel on the roof was broken.
The room was supplied with tea and coffee and this is where attention to detail fits in, the electric kettle did not self cancel on boiling. A small thing yes, but things like this should be dealt with.
The room was en suite, however again, attention to detail, it was not welcoming. The sealant around the bath was very poorly applied and was patchy and dirty, and an large area of the tile grouting was very dirty, 10 minutes with the bleach would make this so much better.
Whilst on the bath, for some reason the shower head was gaffa taped to the shower riser, if its broken, fix it, about £20.00 form B and Q.
Also, one of my wives pet hates in a bathroom, why no shelf for storage of toiletries? There were holes in the wall where one had been, please replace it.
We did take a peek in a couple of other rooms and these looked far better so I think it is pot luck which room you get.
In a place like this I feel that the owners should take time to sleep in each room occasionally and in that way they would pick up on the shortcomings and hopefully sort them out before guests stay.
Thanks for having us Dougie.

Room Tip: On of the twins at the front looks a good bet.

A surprise weekend in Newtonmore is not one I would have thought of.....but this was very nice. The hotel was warm and friendly. Spotlessly clean and very comfortable. There was no television in the room, but that did not make one bit of difference to our break. First morning we had a continental breakfast and the second morning a full cooked breakfast. Both were more than adequate and the cooked breakfast was piping hot. It was like a home from home. If you are looking for a country estate type hotel then this is not it but if you are looking for a place that makes you feel welcome then the Craigerne is the one.

Room Tip: Room 1 was perfect for us.

The plus points of The Craigerne are the location, the friendly welcome - the owner was very helpful throughout our stay, real fire in one of the lounges, the breakfast. Negative points are that we had a bedroom with no television - yes, no television ! This is a hotel which we booked through Itison. the voucher said the normal price for the one night break was £96, reduced to £46 through the voucher. This was for the room, continental breakfast and a bottle of wine. Can't believe anyone would ever have paid £96 for a small basic room with no t.v.! Also, we didn't have a shower in the morning as the towels are very small compared to what most people have at home. We were able to watch t.v. in one of the lounges, but it is not the same. To top it all this was my husband's birthday - a birthday to remember for not for the right reasons ! Would recommend The Glen Hotel , where we had a drink for atmosphere and liked the look of the food . We ate at the Silver Fjord which was really good. Brilliant Steak ! Oh, and also if we had had a television, we still couldn't have watched tv in our room as apparently the roof aerial wasn't working !

Room Tip: make sure there is a tv in the room - make sure it is working - bring own towels.

Stayed here a few times now and really enjoyed it.Room's are relatively basic but clean and tidy.

Right next to the golf course so if you like your golf it couldn't be closer. It's suited to outdoors types and there's plenty of room for wet clothes etc.

Dougie and Joanna make you feel really welcome.

Great value for money and recommended.

Stopped here overnight on a bed and breakfast with our family. For location, Craigerne ticked the box as it was just across the road from the venue we were attending. We were met by Dougie who warmly welcomed us and after a quick orientation of the hotel showed us to our rooms. Clean and basic.

We did make use of the 'honesty bar' - after 'mine host' had replaced the empties!

Our room was adequate and the bed comfortable. Breakfast was ample and covered most diets.

For the money paid, good value.

(Small criticism - as non smokers, the overflowing ashtray on the table at the front/main entrance door was not the best advert)

This was our second visit to this lovely place. This time our family dog came along for the break and was made welcome . This was a very short stay as time was against us on this trip , but we are planning our next visit straight away . Couldn`t have been made more welcome.
