The Botany Bay Hotel
Ranked #1 of 1 Hotels in Kingsgate
Reviewed July 26, 2009

We stayed at The Fayreness Hotel as a last minute weekend getaway. This Hotel was recommended to us by friends that had stayed here for a Wedding earlier on in the year. The Hotel is right on the cliff with brilliant views of the sea and coastline. We were able to get to the beach by just walking over the road, the beach was very clean and the walk round to Broadstairs was lovely, just make sure to check the tide times!

We ate in the bar and the food was superb, proper pub grub. The Hotel does have an A La Carte Restaurant but we didn't use it this time as we dined in Broadstairs with friends, however, we do want to try the Restaurant next time. The bar prices were reasonable and the staff were all friendly and happy to offer advice on the local area and places to go. The Hotel breakfast was fantastic, full fry up after a night out in Broadstairs was much needed!

The Reception staff were very welcoming on arrival and were fast responding when we asked for more towels. We checked in late and the Night Porter was very good, we were also able to make use of the Hotel Bar which is open 24 hours - always a bonus!

All in all we had a fab getaway and being so close to London we would definitely come back here again but hopefully for longer next time!

I stayed here one night - had dog with me so unfortunately could not book a Premium room. However my room was perfectly adequate, comfortable and nice bathroom. Tea and coffee making facilities included.
The hotel is in Kingsgate, 10 minutes drive outside Broadstairs. I did find hotel quite hard to find but it is actually at the bottom of Kingsgate Avenue. Satnav took me all over the place when I typed in "Marine Drive".
The hotel has a big bar and restaurant - usual pub grub. Buy food/drinks at the bar, pay, get a number for your table etc. It wasn't high quality food but it was reasonable and plentiful. Not much else to do in the hotel itself.
The staff were all very friendly and helpfu;.
This area is very residential - hundreds of houses in Kingsgate - a lot are obviously rented holiday homes. It seems to be prime cycling and dog walking territory. Beautiful views and super coastal walks.
All in all I would recommend the hotel. It is a little old fashioned - especially bar and restaurant area but nevertheless does what it says on the tin.

I paid extra to get a premium room, which seemed to be a good choice. At £66 including breakfast this was a fair price. The bedroom was comfortable, clean, warm and spacious, with an excellent sea view. The hotel provides free wireless internet access, although I did not use this. The bedroom was matched by the bathroom. All fixtures and fittings in very good condition and looked fairly new.

There is a restaurant and a bar at the hotel. I ate in the bar, where good pub food and real ale is available at standard British prices. There is a good sized car park for both hotel and restaurant and bar customers.

All of the above made it quite a good place to stay for one night. In my limited experience of nearby hotels, this is the best in the local area. However, there are several possible improvements.

Worst of all was the breakfast. A hotel cooked breakfast should be a treat, but they had clearly bought cheap poor quality produce. The sausage (you only get one) and the beans were disgusting. The choice of cooked breakfast items could be increased considerably as well. The continental breakfast selection didn’t have pastries or fruit. This needs to be rectified, even if they have to increase prices a little to pay for better breakfasts.

A poor choice of TV channels, just the terrestrial channels plus three satellite channels and a radio station. Not good by today’s standards. They could at least provide some Freeview channels at no cost to themselves.

There are no on site leisure facilities, unless you include the pool table and the dart board in the bar!

The selection of consumables is a bit minimal. We all like the little extras in a hotel like stationery, hot chocolate, moisturiser, a shoe shine sponge, a sewing kit, etc, but they were conspicuous by their absence. It's not the be all and end all, but these things make you feel pampered and valued as a guest.

Staff were OK, but lacked warmth. Not rude, but receptionists spoke only the minimum required for the check in and check out process, even though they showed me to the room. The same was true of bar staff. Oh, and paying in advance through a hotel booking company is not something they do. They need a credit card number on check out. This can be an inconvenience if you stay on business and your company usually pays for you in advance.

In conclusion, it’s the best in the area, and not bad overall, but don’t expect a great breakfast.

We spent four nights here in September, and do not regret having done so. Our room was at least big enough to turn round in, with adequate hanging space, more than adequate drawer space, a well-equipped bathroom and a mini-balcony with an excellent view of the nearby cliff-top and the attractive Botany Bay, with low but interesting chalk cliff, lots of sand, and at low tide loads of rocks with pools, just a short walk away. Admittedly, we spent rather more money for that view, but even without it, you can see the sea very easily from the dining room and bar. The food ranges from satisfactory to excellent, and the bar has a fairly good range of drinks. Lots of parking space. A major plus is the staff, who are efficient, helpful, attentive and very friendly - though we didn't try room service, room supplies of coffee, tea, milk etc. were kept well topped-up, and everything was very clean.

Back to the situation: being by the sea it's very breezy, but in our experience not unpleasantly so. There is lots of well cared-for grass around - it's excellent dog-walking territory. Golfers will think it's heaven.

So what's wrong with it? First, it isn't easy to find, though they'll send you exteremely detailed driving directions, which we followed successfully. It is a bit out on a limb: the centre of Broadstairs is a good couple of miles away, and the area is extremely residential, with no shops etc in the immediate vicinity. Also, although the ground floor is very disability-friendly, with plenty of ramps, there is no lift (though the stairs are very gentle), and just three ground floor rooms, all relatively expensive doubles. Over all, it is a little expensive for a hotel of this sort, but it does provide excellent value for money.

Finally, I don't know why it's filed under "Ramsgate" - it's actually on the Margate side of Broadstairs, a longish way from Ramsgate.

We definitely look forward to going back there some time.

On first arrival it does not seem up to much (for the price) but I was pleasantly surprised. Reception very helpful on check in, showed to room (nice touch)….. Booked a Double Deluxe Room – great views, 2 balconies (one with seating). Room was large, very very clean with reproduction furniture but simply decorated.

Hotel itself is good. Basically a pub atmosphere with decent food, staff helpful and friendly, mix of locals and guest in the bar which make it quite relaxed. This is a decent hotel which is priced fairly. If your looking for a base to explore the coast, the beach is 3 mins from hotel !

Only let down was the very limited room service – suggest not having breakfast in room ! but other than that no complaints.

Note – The hotel was really difficult to find so take a map !
