“Good value for money via Groupon”
Reviewed February 12, 2012

Booked a 2 night stay via Groupon for a bargain £129 inclusive of continental breakfast and evening meal (3 courses) both nights.

Great location, great view from big room (number 1) overlooking the River Wye. Good spot for ease to other pubs and walk up to Yat Rock (stunning view!)

Couldn't fault the room, living room / sleeping area. Perfect for resting after a day out. Shower did tend to spray everywhere though but was nice and hot.

Dining area was a bit like your nans front room (dated) as opposed
To a restaurant. Good choice of
Food. Nice starters and mains ok - haddock too fishy (personal opinion!) and steak too chewy! Would have been a little annoyed if had paid full prices (ie if not through Groupon deal). Atmosphere was a bit dull in the dining room / restaurant so felt uncomfortable at times as others could listen to conversation!!

Couldn't fault the staff at all - very welcoming.

All in all me and my boyfriend had a lovely 2 night stay and would recommend it - though would suggest eating at Saracens Head one of the nights, as menu was the same more or less on night 2 of stay. Breakfast was lush - £2 upgrade to full English - really good (and didn't seem too unhealthy!)

We would like to thank our guest for posting a review.

We are very pleased that the guest enjoyed their stay with us and must apologize that the dining area / restaurant was not to their liking. We aim to provide a relaxed informal atmosphere for our guests to enjoy the cuisine that we provide. We must apologize that the guest found the menu somewhat limited on their second night as our Table D'Hote menu does change daily.

We are also pleased that our guest enjoyed the level of service that we pride ourselves on offering here at The Royal Lodge.

We look forward to welcoming our guest back in the very near future.

Kind Regards

A surprise gift with Groupon voucher and could not fault it. Staff friendly and hands on manager to help with parking query. So many little extras which was appreciated even a bottle of spring water on welcome tray.Food was excellent, room with a lovely view and seating area. Bar had a roaring wood burning stove. Next time will take my little dog as the rooms on first floor would be suitable. Will definetly return

Room Tip: If disabled first floor rooms only suitable

Stayed on a Groupon deal Feb 4th 2012. Building is a bit dated but you can see that a gradual modernisation is taking place. The friendliness of the staff and quality of food and service more than made up for the dated feel. Room was very clean with a view of the river - beautiful with snow on the ground! Dinner menu was not the broadest, but quality of food was excellent. The only negative comment I would make concerns the ensuite shower room - I have never seen such a small ensuite! The shower cubicle is tiny and there is no room between the shower and toilet to dry off or dress. Overall an excellent deal and I would definitely return.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a bathroom NOT a shower!

Booked the Royal Lodge on £70 Groupon deal DBB for my wife and myself and we were not disappointed. Beautiful location with fine views of the River Wye and Symonds Yat Rock a short but steep climb at the rear of the hotel. Staff exremely polite and attentive.Had a spacious, very clean, room with picture view of the river. The receptionist gave us a fresh jug of milk to go with the tea, coffee & biscuits in the room. The evening meal was excellent. Plenty to chose from on the 3 course menu, For starters it was Thai Fishcake for me and grilled mushrooms with butterscotch sauce for my wife; both delicious. Main meal: sirloin steak done to perfection and tasty salmon for madame accompannied by a dish of freshly cooked vegetables. Dessert was sticky toffee pudding with icecream which tasted fab-u-luss all washed down with a bottle of Argentinian Malbec. Yes, we enjoyed our stay and will be returning to the Royal Lodge.

My other half booked this as a Groupon deal on a Dinner & BB basis and I must say what excellent value for money it turned out to be. We were taken aback with the beautiful setting being directly on the river with amazing views. The hotel staff couldn't have been more attentive and the food (dinner and breakfast) was excellent. The room was spacious and clean although a little dated. The hotel is in prime position to enjoy the surrounding countryside. Yat Rock is directly behind and although a steep climb the views from the top are amazing. We also walked the scenic river route to Monmouth (approx 5 miles one way) which was fun in the snow. All in all a great gem of a place which we will definitely return to in the future.

Well where do i start, this trip was booked for my partner for a birthday present but unfortunately i ended up going alone. I had never took a trip alone before so i was very apprehensive , i need not have worried as the staff homed in on this and made things very easy for me , especially at meals times. The walks and scenery where breathtaking, and the meals were lovingly prepared. The hotel i feel does need a bit of updating decoration wise and the bed in Room 15 was very hard, but then i do sleep on a memory foam mattress at home.I will definately be going back at some point and hope to be fitter next time so my trek up Yats Rock will be much easier .

Thank you Emma and Ben for keeping an eye on me.

We would like to thank our guest for taking the time to share the experience of their visit to us here at the Royal Lodge.

We are very pleased that we provided a relaxing environment for the guest traveling alone for the first time. We are very grateful that the level of service and food provided were appreciated. We do apologize that the mattress was not to this guests liking but unfortunately memory foam mattresses would not be practical in our establishment.

We look forward to welcoming the guest back to the Royal Lodge for another enjoyable stay in the very near future.

Stayed here with girlfriend on a £70 Groupon deal that was room, evening meal and breakfast (£2 supplement each for cooked food). A friend had also booked and stayed and said it was nice so I had good expectations. Boy was i dissappointed...

Nice tranquil location beside the river and woodlands, good start. No hotel car park so you have to park in a very close by rough surfaced pay and display. Ask at reception and they will give you a free parking voucher. I had to ask, i was not offered?

Check in was a mess, they had checked someone else into my room and had to go off leaving me for 10 mins to work out what had gone wrong. Problem solved and I was checked in. No local info offered, but did offer refreshments and did book evening meal time which was nice.

The hotel appears quite old and has undergone some modernisation and some tidying but still retains too much 60's tat like cheap doors and visible heating pipes, switches, etc.

Getting to the room (16) was like a trip through a carnival funhouse without the fun. It was stairs, fire door, corridor, stairs, firedoor, stairs, corridor, firedoor, etc. Lots of doors into staff rooms and store rooms ajar with the pong of cleaning products filling the bland 60's corridors.

The room was large, 60's panelled ceiling and loft hatch above the bed!!! Great view over the river through large window. The owners have made a great start at decorating the place in a mix of contemporary and original style that looks good but it's incomplete. The bathroom was freezing. The radiator didn't work and they had a small floor heater attached to the wall. This made a hell of a din when turned on so had to turn off to go to bed later resulting in the room being so cold again in the morning that my shower gel was solidifying! Shower ran off bath taps and it was impossible to find any temperature between scalding and freezing however much i tried.

There is no room sound insulation and i could hear people in other rooms and other floors talking, snoring, walking about and opening and closing doors. The heating is supplied by a drainpipe sized pipe running along one wall at the floor which is not only damned ungly but unreliable as i kept waking up cold, then hot, then cold, etc. Between the temperature and the noise i had no sleep what so ever.

Evening meal was dreadful. Miniscule menu, with bizarre meals (pork with pepper sauce, pear tart with strawberry icecream, etc). Of the 3 meat dishes there was no fillet steak left and only one pork left and this only arose after ordering!!! There was sirloin available still. No steak sauces on the menu, I had to ask and they are available. I ordered Fillet, came back run out, I ordered Pork, came back only one left (girlfriend had it)..... I had three different waiting staff when i told them this was not good with escalating attempts to placate me, with a sorry, sorry than an offer of a glass of wine or coffee. Really? You have no meat dishes on your minute menu and you offer me a coffee to make up for it? Really?

Breakfast was ok, ceratinly nothing to write home about - average. No juices left, had to go and find staff to ask for juice. Pancakes with maple syrup arrive with no maple syrup.... Do you see the pattern here - Badly managed sums it up.

Overall, a dissappointment with no recovery by hotel staff for glaring errors.

I wouldn't come again and based on other hotels i've stayed at, the £70 Groupon was overpriced!! Give this one a miss.

Room Tip: Try another hotel

Whilst we appreciate all customer feedback we respond to this review with factual information.

This review does stand out as an anomaly against our other feedback.

The Royal Lodge, an ancient Royal Hunting Lodge is nestled under Symonds Yat Rock in a stunning riverside location. We have a very large car park for which we provide complimentary parking for all of our guests and issue a permit on check in. The guest was actually upgraded from one of our smaller standard rooms to a larger room on check in. Unfortunately there was a slight delay while housekeeping were preparing the upgraded room. For this delay we do apologize.
As the Royal is a very old building we do have some corridors with character, however are not out dated with fresh colors and carpet. With regards to fire doors these are a safety necessity.
Our room 16 does not have paneled ceilings but is wallpapered and painted in neutral fresh colors with color matching bedding and curtains. Some of our rooms do have the large bore heating and are very warm. A wall heater is provided in this large bathroom should a guest wish to use it. Room 16 is located on the second floor overlooking the top lawn and rooms adjacent are not disturbed by other guests. It is unfortunate that the guest may have been disturbed.
With regards to our menu and restaurant whilst we endeavor to have all dishes available at all times on occasions we do run out of certain options. It was unfortunate that the fillet steak and pork had been so popular but we did have 5 other meat dishes on the mains section to offer.
The Royal is accredited with the AA dinner and breakfast awards for which we offer a high quality, range of locally sourced and home cooked dishes.
We do offer pancakes for breakfast with a choice of accompaniments, one of which being maple syrup., however this is not normally served with bacon and tomatoes.

We can only apologize that this guest did not enjoy there stay, we felt it necessary to respond with a factual response.

Kind Regards
Guest Relations.
