We stayed 2 nights at the Royal Lodge hotel, just 500 yards along from the Saracens head.
Although our hotel was ok we will definitely be staying at the Saracens next time we visit Symonds Yat east. The bar is well stocked and has some great ales and wines along with a lovely atmosphere . Having studying the restaurant menu during the day, we decided to eat there for the next 2 nights.
The food was absolutely fantastic. Great service and a lovely ambience.
This place is a must for everyone !!

We found this pub almost by accident having rejected the rather sorry assortment of potential eateries in Ross-on-Wye itself. A quick Internet search gave the Saracens Head as an option and a check of the menu was enough for us to get back into the car and head towards Symonds Yat.

We are so pleased that we did - the setting was amazing and the pub was clean and inviting. The service was great (possibly a little slow at times but entirely excusable), the portions were enormous, the food perfectly cooked and the bill a pleasant surprise (when comparing both the quality and quantity of food with our evening meal in Liverpool on the previous evening).

All in all, I would thoroughly recommend this tranquil and beautiful spot and this gem of a pub.

Having had so many recommendations for this place, we chose to go there mid-week for dinner. The whole of the waiting staff appeared to be students of about 17-19 years of age - in itself, not a problem, but they clearly hadn't been given much in the way of instruction. I had to laugh when a young girl gave me a wine suggestion for the fish!

Anyway, one of our two starters was fabulous - the oxtail soup, the other was totally forgettable. My partner then had fish in a smoky rub - it was, in short, a nasty piece of cooking, almost inedible. Complaining to the waitress, she said she'd mention it to the manager. After 20 minutes, nothing had happened and, despite the restaurant being fairly empty, the waiters and waitresses paid little attention to those who were actually dining.

We left having paid the bill (no tip), feeling very disappointed. If there was a lesson to be learned here, it would be for the restaurant to get some more mature staff who actually know about and care for food, drink and the customer experience.

We had a lovely visit to The Saracens Head on a Tuesday lunch time. There was a good warm atmosphere and was very busy, which is always an encouraging sign.
The menu had a wide choice and also catered well for children. Our food was superb as was the choice of wines and ales.

Look forward to returning again soon.
