“Staff were friendly and squeezed us in on a late booking”
Reviewed August 20, 2011

I can see that the site used to have problems from the reviews, but we had a different experience. The camp site was lovely, we got to camp right next to the river, quiet, but no one got any hassle for chatting. Lots of families as a well as a few bigger groups.

It was well run, though the warden's caravan wasn't well signed - they came and found us and nicely showed us where they wanted us to pitch up.
Our friends arrived late, but that wasn't an issue. Showers were warm, though i could see how they could get dirty, they have signs up asking people to not bring boots in.
They clearly told us that the group needs to pay on arrival, so we expected that.

Our boating and boat hire experience was good also, even though we were late back, they were friendly, and we really enjoyed the coaching on the second day.

We booked into this campsite for two nights at the beginning of August before we read the previous reviews on Trip Advisor, so were very apprehensive on the journey down. How anyone can call this a campiste is beyond me, we drove round the car park (as that's all I can descibe is as) and drove out again.
We stayed at Symonds Yat West at [--] - it was lovely - basic but just what we wanted and the staff were lovely too

I have visited this site before and love it for its location although I agree that on previous visits the staff were a little off hand and the facilities left much to be desired. However we stayed here for the weekend recently and the staff were very friendly and there is a new shower block. I know they take noise bonds of around £120 for a group of four; there is no cash point readily available so groups should bear this is mind before travelling all the way there. It’s a stunning area with limited space for car parks, campsite, restaurants and tea rooms who have the monopoly, so be prepared to pay the price.

Thank You very much for your review.
We have worked very hard over the winter to redevelop our campsite with more work planned for the end of this season.
We are very pleased that you chose to come and visit us again and that you have seen a vast improvement in our facilities and our staff.

We hope to see you again soon.

Shocking, I have never experienced such rude staff surely people go to a camp site to relax and have a good time this was not allowed here which we found out when one of the staff barged into are caravan shouting at us for noise and then slamming our door before we even had a chance to reply, i wouldn’t of minded if we had been making excessive noise but this was not the case! We also experienced a gas leak into the caravan to which the staff did nothing just turned the gas off and left us all night with no gas thus no heating or cooking facilities. Amazing place shame about the staff luckily good company got us through it.

We (group of 8) had planned the canoeing trip for months and all were looking forward to it. It is a stunning part of the country, and the canoeing is a really great experience. However, the staff are rubbish - rude, arrogant, awkward, obstructive, disinterested (unless it has to do with the "Noise Policy") and VERY unhelpful. We were met by Mr Fascist and told we couldn't camp (or even go onto the campsite) until everyone in our booked party paid their £20 IN CASH. When we told them that most of our party were stuck in a massive tailback on the M5 and probably wouldn't get there until it was dark, we were told that wasn't their problem and that the person who booked it would've been told this RULE. (They weren't by the way!) Nevertheless, we remained calm and tried to find a solution. We offered to leave our credit card as security (NO, can't take Credit cards), how about a cheque (NO, apparently we could stop that), how about giving all the cash we had (about £70 short of the demanded £160) (ABSOLUTELY NO because he needed all the money at once in case someone went to the pub and didn't pay their share) - we reminded him that they wouldn't get there until after dark - NO! Instead we got a big lecture on how "Groups" gave them so much trouble. So we went and waited for our friends at the pub and put up our tents in the pitch dark. Customer service to be seen to be believed. Pub staff in the Saracens Head were unfriendly and actually haughty and rude????? And there was one chap who did the canoeing who was actually decent. He gave a decent brief and even canoed to the rapids to help us. Oh and the guy that drove us down to the river on the first day was friendly. The rest should seriously go on a People Skills course....to live/work in such a beautiful place and still be as rude as they were is really beyond me. The facilities are basic, yes, and functional (or "functionable" as the sign on the back of the smallest shower in the world's door) and a bit scruffy - but I have seen worse! Seriously believe all the bad reviews this place has got. There is another campsite in West Symonds Yat - use that one!

I'll get straight to the point: DONT STAY AT THIS CAMPSITE! The list of negatives is simply too long to write here. We booked the campsite as it's location and canoe hire sounded like the easiest option, how wrong we were! We were a large group and occupied most of the campsite (there were 2 other tents outside of our group), so introduced ourselves to the other campers. They all said that they were looking forward to going home for reasons we were soon to find out. The 'facilities' were filthy, poorly maintained and inadequate to all but a handful of people. The staff were rude, used scare tactics in order to maintain control (we were told that we would be shot in the face by the farmer if we strayed into the next field!) and as for the warden, you'd have to be a ninja not to lose the £20 per person noise deposit that they were so keen to collect. The site manager had no people skills whatsoever and had evicted a lovely couple only the night before for excessive noise. As we were in the tent next door and heard nothing at all, we were as surprised as they were! I cannot emphasise this enough...don't even consider this place, it will ruin your holiday and none of our group will be visiting symonds yay again...there are better, friendlier places.
