I've never stayed at a Parador before and I was surprised at what a neat, old-style building it is. We were greeted warmly by a friendly front desk staff who took us to our rooms and made us feel welcome. The rooms are well-sized and clean and comfortable. The bathrooms include great amenities that I understand are the standard for any Parador. The rooms include beautiful wood details with antique looking furniture. This would be a great place to stay for anyone who wanted to explore this area of Spain. We didn't eat breakfast here because it was 16 Euros per person, but there are lots of options close to the hotel that are quite cheap and good.

The hotel is housed in a not particularly historic building but has plenty of the usual Parador space, and a nautical theme as befits the port. Ferrol is not a major tourist destination but better known for the shipyards visible from your room from our nice enclosed balcony. Access is via the newish Autovia all the way to the port - an earlier turnoff gets you lost in the grid of small cobbled streets. Parking in the square in front of the hotel is limited to the spaces delineated in white. This comfortable hotel is a convenient stop while touring Galicia. Staff resources are limited but the Parador style is key: large traditional comfortable rooms, heavy furniture, lavishly equipped and immaculately maintained. The restaurant has a typical Parador menu with many items available for the three courses for E37 offer. But ambitions were perhaps a bit high for the limited numbers dining and standards were a bit stretched. Breakfast had plenty of choice including a successive variety of little cooked dishes. The coffee was poor, fresh fruit excellent. Great selection of breads, cold cuts etc.

The Parador de Ferrol is officially rated a 3 star property (most other Paradors are 4 or 5).

If you adjust your expectations accordingly (and dependant upon the price you pay for your room) there is every liklihood that you will receive reasonable value for money. The Parador is in an interesting part of the city - sits on a hill overlooking the old port and the warehouses that line the dock. There are many restaurants and bars within easy walking distance.

Is this the most amazing Parador in the chain - no - are the rooms large - no - is the room comfortable and does it provide a good nights sleep - yes. Are the public areas comfortable and functional and convey some of the historical atmosphere of the city - yes.

We ate at the restaurant, rather than venture out (heavy thunderstorm) - and so broke our golden rule that says that "hotel restaurants will generally not live up to expectations". Our meal was adequate - you wouldn't give it high marks for flavour, presentation or originality. Nor would you find significant faults. Our only real criticism was that the service was slow (for everyone in the restaurant that evening). The restaurant ambience was pleasant without being memorable. the breakfast the following morning, with the benefit of views on a bright morning was a better experience.

In giving a rating for the hotel - I struggled - it is probably deserving of a 3 and half rating - it is not above average, nor is it just average.

We had a lovely room overlooking the port. Since it was a Sunday, very few restaurants or shops were open in the evening, but the parador is very close to markets and restaurants. It was a nice stop in a pretty town. It would be nice if they included even a simple continental breakfast for the price.

For those who are expecting the traditional parador experience then prepare to be disappointed. Nonetheless the hotel has to be the best act in town. The building has been recently built along the lines of a traditional parador, it has all of the comforts and some of the facilities but none of the history and tradition. Well worth a visit if you are in the area.

The hotel was excellent value. Even though they had a lot of rooms the service was very personal. A good restaraunt and Pub. Good views across the bay and lots of open areas around the hotel. Conveintently loacted for the shops and pubs.
