Reviewed June 5, 2014

spent 2 weeks at the Luna Club (4 star) 20th May to 3rd June on half board basis, the hotel is next to the Luna Park (3 star) all the facilities are shared, outdoor/ indoor swimming pool, fitness room, bubble bath etc,. There is a single reception desk which handles all arrivals/departures for both the Luna Club and Luna Park. The hotel was very clean in all respects, the staff helpful and eager to please. Meals however were a different matter, breakfast meals were quite good, the usual eggs bacon, cereals etc,. evening meals were quite awful, few choices which were repeated day after day, at best the food was just warm and sometimes quite cold, my wife had a particular moan about bread stored in a cardboard box in a cupboard and put out each morning/evening, pretty stale, not suprising given the method of storage. We became so bored with fare on offer in the evenings that we ate out at local restaurants on some occasions. Things to do, the beach is about 200m from the hotel and is accessible by passageways under the railway line; The beach is not sand but a coarse fine shale, footware recommended. There a boat trips to take sightseers along the coast to Blanes, Lloret and Tossa. The Luna Hotel are actally i Santa Susann

Hotel was clean but definitely not 4 star. Customers tended to be old mostly German. Line dancing was the entertainment. We were a group of ten out for the grand prix and selected this hotel on an all inclusive package as a better option due to time. All inclusive meant restrictions on drinks (you could only get your own not even your partners) finished at 11pm and very average buffet food. It was also right next to nightclubs and we were awoken each night at 4-6 in the morning with screaming and shouting and very loud music. Would not recommend this place.

The hotel itself is ok, although the "sea view" from our room was a glimpse of blue between 2 buildings (a la Fawlty Towers!)The main problem here was that 99.9% of the guests were not English, so our tastes were definitely not catered for. Champagne with breakfast was a nice touch, but overall the food on offer was bland and uninspiring. As there is very little outside the hotel compound in the way of other bars, restaurants or shops, we were more or less confined here. We will certainly never go back.

I am serious when I say this hotel is NOT suitable for British guests! I have just returned from a 4 night stay at this hotel and can honestly say I would not stay there again nor would I recommend it to anyone. We stayed in the 4 star Luna Club but I have no idea what the difference was between the 3 star and the 4 star, you get the same food, the same drink etc. I have no complaints about the room or the cleanliness. On arrival we made a big mistake in up-grading to all-inclusive! I am certainly not fussy when it comes to food but I really struggled and ate more vegetarian food than anything else. There was only chicken on the menu once in the whole time we were there! At breakfast the bacon and sausage were certainly not for British taste. You had to stand and put your bread through the toaster 3 times before it was in the slightest bit brown and then that got cold while you stood and queued waiting for the chef to fry some eggs. I suppose someone people were impressed with the champagne and chocolate fountain! We tried the red wine, white wine and rose but none was drinkable! We tried to go outside the hotel for a meal but there was very little in the way of tidy restaurants in this resort! Unfortunately both off us suffered with stomach problems and can only put it down to the food. I ended up eating soup and bread for several meals as there was literally nothing else I liked. There was very little choice in the salad department but the fruit was good. We did give up on the fruit after suffering with stomach problems. Turning to the entertainment.......well it was intended for the older Spanish/Italian guests who spent the evenings in the bar watching the entertainment without even buying a drink! If we asked for some British music they gave us the evil eye and moaned until the music was changed back to what they wanted. So like I said at the beginning this hotel does not cater for British, besides the 2 of us there was one British family and one British couple and I don't think any of us would go back there!

We returned to the Luna Club for a weeks break in April 2014 mainly to be able to use the hotel as a base to visit Barcelona – a much cheaper option that staying in the City itself, although we did spend one night in the City which was a welcome reprieve from the dreadfully uncomfortable hard beds at the Luna Club which we mentioned last year and have not changed.

Also unchanged is the poor food in the restaurant in the evenings, although there is a slightly better selection of vegetables available. Puddings are very scant but there is lots of fruit for those who like a healthier option. Breakfast has improved markedly but don't expect either an English or a continental but there is a good selection of food.

We found it almost impossible to buy fresh milk locally for a cuppa (take your kettle, tea bags and mugs) and the hotel charged a fair fee for a glass.

The welcome and the friendly ‘can’t do enough’ staff, the beautiful pool, lovely reception and lounge area plus the general high standard of cleanliness and the fabulous spa sway us to returning, but we would be forced to take some carry mats to sleep on if we did! We were particularly delighted with the welcome bowl of fruit on our arrival as recognition of our return – we would like to thank the hotel for their thoughtfulness and Youssef and Salma for making our break so special (and helping me improve my Spanish).

The spa area was busy because of the unreliable spring weather and the hotel needs to enforce the ‘no children in the spa’ rule though as it was overrun at times with children who were also diving into the spa pool.

We were unfortunate to have very noisy neighbours who delighted in banging about in the middle of the night and prancing around on the hard floors in stilettos for hours! The older clientele thought nothing of standing outside our door at a similar time and very early in the morning talking very loudly in their foreign accents either!

We were unaware that we had timed our visit at the same time as an international junior football tournament . Their behaviour at nearby hotels did mar our experience somewhat and we were only grateful for the location of our hotel away from the main drag through Malgrat de Mar.

Because of the time of year there was a paucity of entertainment or eating out venues locally but the hotel has entertainment most nights more geared to the Spanish more mature generation but nevertheless somewhere to 'while away the time'.

We took our own advice and used to taxi to get to and from the airport – about 60 euro. Took about 40 minutes and was blissfully relaxing and very quick when compared to our previous experience of the holiday company’s transfer.

We found travelling to Barcelona very easy on the train and the fare is reasonable – 10 rides for about 33 Euro and combined this with a similar 10 ride ticket in the City itself. These tickets can be shared between two people by passing behind at the turnstiles.

We visited the Sagrada Familia after a 3 hour queue – book your tickets on line before – the website we were given was visit.sagradafamilia.cat/

All in all a great break for the time of year and we had some lovely weather on some days - even sunbathing on the beach. Might return later this year - tempted!

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the pool have the best aspect and choose the 'club' not the 'park'...

We stayed at the Luna Club in June 2013 and overall had a nice time.

The hotel is lovely with clean rooms and facilities and a great view of the pool which is lit up beautifully at night. The only negative was that we had ants in our room which ran through the draws (we were on the top floor work that one out!).

We booked half board and so ate breakfast and dinner in the hotel resturant. The buffet was one of the best ive experience abroad and we always found something lovely to eat. (This is coming from two fussy eaters!). The queue for the resturant can be quite long if you go as soon as it opens so we always aimed to get there about 20 minutes later to avoid the queue.

Night time entertainment let the hotel down for us. There is very little which goes on at night, there was often Spanish music or dancers but very little in the way of entertainment such as evening shows etc. Therefore we often walked along the sea front to find alternative entertainment.

There are lots of little shops etc and numerous night clubs with promotors trying to drag you in!The hotel in my opinion is suited to those who like a quiet relaxing holiday and if you enjoy masses of night time entertainment as appose to a stroll and a drink you may be better of choosing somewhere more lively.

Overall a lovely first holiday in a lovely hotel, just a little too quiet for us.

Room Tip: Get a room with a pool view, its beautifully lit up of a night

We stayed at the Luna Club Hotel in September 2013 for 5 nights as a last minute break to celebrate our 25th Anniversary. Contrary to previous reports we found that the staff were very friendly, couldn’t do enough for the guests, and acted immediately on any requests for repairs/fault correction. The bar man in the restaurant was great fun and the lady in the bar for the club residents was very amenable and friendly. Special thanks to Alithia for making us feel so welcome and answering all our daft questions!

The resort is very lively, but this hotel is an oasis of calm out of the way of the busy seafront but easily accessible from the beach. We stayed at the Luna Club which is the more luxurious part of the hotel and comes complete with a fabulous spa – pool and Jacuzzi. There is also a gym and the opportunity to take part in various classes if you are fully inclusive (as we were). We had a very interesting relaxation session in the pool – ‘Watsu’ – such a treat. The garden for the Luna Club residents has plenty of sun beds with it’s own pool that is quite unimpressive in it’s size, but has it’s own bar and eating area providing lovely snacks most of the day for the all inclusive guests.

The other pool is much larger and very impressive with the bar area, which is shared with the other part of the hotel, adjoining it. The view over the pool at night to the bar area is magical and there was varied entertainment each night noticeably of a better ‘class’ than that on the main parade of the seafront. It finishes at a sensible time and the hotel was very quiet at night.

It is true that the beds are very hard and I agree that I wouldn’t have wanted to sleep on them any longer. Having said that the bedroom was tastefully furnished, clean and with towels changed daily. It is possible to hire towels for use in the hotel with a deposit of 10 Euro per towel but these are not to be taken to the beach. There is a hire charge for cushions for the loungers but they aren’t really necessary, and we had no problem getting wi fi in most parts of the hotel free of charge.

There is a real hairdryer in the bathroom not a hot tube variety and each room has a balcony with a small but adequate airer under cover for drying swimming costumes etc.

The main disappointment for us was the food in the restaurant and the atmosphere in there. Yes, you do have to queue to get a table – we took a book to read in the queue each night! The system is self service once you have been seated and it most days it was quite miserable experience to jostle your way to the food. I’m not really sure that it was worth the effort really as the food was generally of poor quality – lots of cheap cuts of meat, stewed and with lots of bone. There were very few fresh vegetables although plenty of salad. It was generally repetitive and bland. The eating experience at the table was equally horrid with tables too close together, miserable waitresses clearing plates around us and the noise was pretty intolerable - a real bun fight. We would have eaten elsewhere if we had had to endure the process much longer. We had hoped for much better after previous reviews – we wonder if there has been a change of chef.

There was however wine on tap for us which was very tasty although surviving on a liquid diet is not to be recommended! Equally the drinks for all inclusive at the bar were perfect and with San Miguel on tap my husband was very satisfied. (I preferred the cocktails but recommend the coffee liqueur).

Malgrat de Mar itself is much like the more wild parts of the Costa Brava we drove through en route but slightly quieter. Most of the clientele were of an older disposition although there were some younger residents evident. We didn’t experience any problematic behaviour even around the few nightclubs on the strip.

There are plenty of other hotels to visit if you fancy a change with a variety of musicians and lots of food outlets reasonably priced.

The beach is accessed by going under the railway that runs along the front and has coarse sand – great for not getting in everything! There are sun beds and parasols to hire and beach bars for refreshments.

Barcelona is easily reached and we went on a day trip on the coach to get a ‘whistle-stop’ tour of the city – well worth a visit. There is a railway station locally but we didn’t use it. The old part of the town is worth a visit to get a better Spanish flavour and some good views from the old castle site.

The transfer time from the airport booked through our tour operator was ridiculous – it took nearly two hours for our journey to the hotel due to the tortuous route. It took ½ hour on the way back and we had a long wait at the airport as a result – it is probably better to look at alternative travel to save wasting precious holiday time.

Overall we have returned with some very special memories of our holiday and would certainly use the hotel again but seriously consider going elsewhere for the food.

Room Tip: Make sure you chose the Luna club not the luna only. Pool facing rooms are better.
