“A Bit Tired!”
Reviewed August 17, 2013

This was a little disappointing. Wonderful location and extensive outdoor facilities but in need of some capital expenditure to restore the huge property to expected Parador standard. The staff did much to make up for these shortcomings, I would guess many had been in the same job for years!
I would still recommed de Cervera de Pisuerga as a base for car touring but perhaps for only a few days. The restaurant was very well run, though the menu seemed slightly inflexible and rather dated. Breakfast was a high-point with a huge buffet to suit all tastes.
It seems a shame to say so when the staff were clearly trying so hard but I could not help feeling I was back in a large, well run,1960 style, military establishment!

Room Tip: Well worth asking for a front room with a lake view [the car park is not an ideal view!] even if a s...

That is what this parador has as a very big plus. Marvelous views, quiet, surrounded by forrest. The building itself however can do with an upgrade, the mountain lodge style is very cosy, but the disadvantages it brings is not up to 21 century standards. You can hear everything in the rooms alongside and the room above. By all means, i do not want to be party of that very happy 5 minutes just before the lights go out. Also the plumbing is noisy... The restaurant is very up to parador standard, nice choices on the menu and big portions. Wifi is free and has sufficient speed. I would go back to enjoy the surroundings, not for the noise inside the hotel.

This was our last parador . The frontage is uninspring but if you have booked a room with a view you soon forget the entrance . The view is wonderful and first thing birds are wheeling around at great speed . The rooms are in need of updating for a fresher feel , the hotel feels dark and sombre . The staff on reception , in the restaurant and the bar do not reflect this and all were excellent . The meals were lovely and breakfast was of a high standard .

A modern parador on the edge of a national park - with lovely walks right from the hotel gate. There was a tourism conference starting that night, so we were given an upgraded room to compensate for the disruption, and had a balcony with a view over the lake which was quite outstanding. In the restaurant we sat in an area reserved for 'normal' guests because the conference attendees were having a buffet. It sounds awful but in fact we had an excellent meal and were entertained watching the 'meet and greet' activities of conference delegates. Our room did indeed have the 'hunting lodge' feel mentioned by another reviewer. The plumbing for the bath was very noisy and the water a bit brown in colour when first run - maybe an upgrade is due - but fortunately the noisy pipes stopped soon after the bath was run. We will certainly return as there is a lot to explore in this area and the staff were unfailingly helpful and polite.

After an astonishing drive through the Picos de Europa for 4 hours from the coast to this little village we came to this nice hotel in the middel of nature and mountains. The hotel is adequate pleasant and in public areas a bit outdated. Superb food, however, with the best appetizer I ever have eaten.

Sometimes when things are raved about they turn out to be disappointing but staying in this parador achieved our expectations and possibly even surpassed them when we opened our balcony doors for the first time. It certainly has a wow factor for the view, and at night, under a starlit sky, the sounds of all sorts of wildlife echoing around the surrounding countryside are equally memorable.

Fabulously spacious room and bathroom. Excellent public rooms to retreat to for reading and quiet when room shutters are being battered by heavy rain and a howling wind which can happen due to its ridge top location. We were surprised to find that although the parador has the atmosphere of a grand 1920s hunting lodge it was only built in the 1970s.

We found the breakfast choice and preparation stunningly good and enjoyed being able to prolong the event until 11am if required. Stocking up well in the morning meant there was no need for a 'proper' lunch and fruit, nuts and biscuits sufficed more than adequately until dinner.

Could do with an earlier start for dinner though – 8.30pm is a bit late for us. We enjoyed the three course set menu one day but found the portions so generous that we could not manage a second night and chose to eat more simply in the town. Only discovered later that you can opt for any items on any of the menus and just pay for what you have but that was not explained to us until our third parador – by then they had probably missed out on a few nights custom from us as our appetites just couldn't do justice to the full works on successive nights.

The great thing about the location is that you can park up for a few days and enjoy walks out from the hotel. Maps available on request from reception with commentary are useful. We particularly enjoyed the walk through Arbejal to the Embalse de la Requejada for a picnic, a leisurely read of our books while trying to spot wildlife, and return to the hotel which made a good day out.

We took the car to explore the Embalse de Cervera and found with a 4x4 you can drive quite a way around it and it's a popular place for picnics. On a wet day we drove out to the Embalse de Compuerto which even in the rain and when sadly short of water, as they all were this year, is an impressive sight.

Room Tip: Top floor, or any floor really, as long as it has a view of the lake.
