“Hidden Gem in Es Migjorn Gran”
Reviewed August 24, 2013

This was our first visit to S'Engolidor and came highly recommended by friends from Barcelona who eat there regularly when staying in Menorca.

Situated near the centre of Es Migjorn the restaurant is a traditional Menorcian townhouse with intimate dining areas both indoors and outside with large terraces at the rear of the property where the tables are generously spaced out in the manicured gardens.

We booked a table for six in the garden and spent a leisurely three hours from nine till midnight working our way thought the menu.

Several of the staff spoke perfect English and there were dedicated menus in English, Spanish and Catalan with very accurate translations. An interesting addition to the menu were Gluten Free logos against most of the food.

We started by sharing the Vegetarian Stuffed Aubergines and Mushroom & Artichoke Crepes both of which were good value at €7 each.

For our main course we shared Stuffed Squid and Dorada (Gilt Head Bream) both dishes cost €13 each and were cooked to perfection, the squid was stuffed with its tentacles and almonds and served with an almond sauce.

The English menu advertised the fish as Dorada fillets but when it arrived it was the whole fish and came with a separate plate for the bones. This wasn't a problem for us but could be for someone expecting boneless fillets. The Dorada was served with Menorcan potatoes and a very yummy red onion relish.

The children feasted on a range of starters and sampled the Cheese Soufflé followed by Meatballs and then another Cheese Soufflé but this time with Sobrassada.

Much later we sampled the homemade desserts that included a delicate Orange Cake served as two small discs, a large wedge of Chocolate & Walnut Cake and three different Sorbets.

On the night we visited the roads were closed to vehicles from nine till midnight making the pedestrianised town centre a pleasure to explore before our meal. There was limited parking adjacent to the restaurant but there were two large free car parks situated at either end of the town both just a short stroll from the restaurant.

The staff were more than happy for us to share our dishes and they gave the children extra caramel biscuits when we had our coffee which I thought was a very nice touch.

The service was both efficient and attentive but paced to suit our leisurely progress as we caught up on the past year with our friends between courses.

S'Engolidor is highly recommended, we paid €140 including drinks for three courses for four adults and two children. We are planning a return visit to sample the rest of the menu and wine list only next time we plan to book an overnight stay and sample the breakfast.

Thank you very much for your comment.
We are very pleased to know that you have enjoyed your meal in our restaurant.
We note the mistake in the translation of the Dorada. No doubt receive some opinions so good and so explanatory, we do continue to work on the same line, and help us to improve our service.

Hope you can enjoy another day of our food and service. We will be very pleased to see you again.

Our best wishes,

Pere Sales

This is quite a nice hostel but a bit small and pretty simple with a bit out of date facilities. Nevertheless, Menorca is an island to visit and the hotel should be used only as a place to sleep and eat. The food and wines of the restaurant are really great! and the location is very convenient as it is in the middle of the island. Enjoy

Thank you very much for your review.

from visiting us in September 2012, we made some improvements to our rooms. The rooms have been equipped qith a ceiling fan, heating, television, hair dryer, and we have arranged the rooms small damages might have.
We also changed all the bed mattress.
As you maybe know, we took over the business last year, and in our first Winter when we closed, we did all this improvements.

We are also very pleased that you have enjoyed our restaurant.

Thanks again for your comments.

we are looking forward to seeing you soon.

We stayed for ten days in June. The rooms have antique but selected furniture which gives a special charm to each of them. Coming home from the beach or from a walking-tour, we took a shower, and then we were looking forward for going downstairs in the garden for dinner (and we just missed it one evening). The menu offered every day delicious discoveries and in the morning the day started with a rich and fresh breakfast. The very nice garden is the perfect place for the evening – the atmosphere is very special and we enjoyed it so much!

Very high standard B&B, small but very comfortable. Our hosts were very hospitable.
If you're looking for mod cons this isn't the place for you. As a clean and welcoming central location for Minorca it probably cannot be bettered!
English speaking and very pleasant staff.
We wish the owner much success for the future and We will be back.
Situated on one of the main roads of the town but hardly any traffic so a peaceful nights sleep
Next time we will use the restaurant!

Room Tip: We took a peek at the suite and in comparison to the room we stayed it was of a higher standard. Ne...

Stayed here one night and had dinner. Was in Menorca for a week and this was the best food we had, period, and very resonable. Great atmosphere, amazing location, and great to just walk upstairs to bed in a traditional room with great views. Pere very welcoming and firendly. Dont miss dinner here. get the Orange Cake! I don't usually write reviews but this was such a good experience compared to most of the other meals we had, it would be a pity for anyone to miss this regardless of where you are on the island. Not touristy at all, but the staff speak good English.

Room Tip: Only 4 rooms I think - we didn;t see the suite. We had one overlooking open countryside - I think ro...

Stayed here on a four day break at the end of April. The rooms are comfortable and clean - towels changed daily ! So bed and ample breakfast was more than adequate and fatastic value.
The suite on the top floor was already booked, but the guests staying there kindly showed me the very impressive accommodation. Very spacious with fatastic views from the terrace/balcony.
However, the star of the show is the restaurant.
The set menu is only €18 and the varied menu changes each week. The a la carte menu is extensive and outstanding quality and also inexpensive.
I ate here every evening out of choice and the highlights for me were cheese souffle, dorada fish (gilt head bream) and the profiteroles were to die for.
Simple home cooking at its best.
The four adults on the next table at the end of my break had especially travelled from Son Parc on a recommendation. They were also suitably impressed.
On a personal note I must admit that the staff all spoke perfect English which was very welcome.
I would readily recommend this establishment and hope to return later in the season

Having spent a week eating overpriced 'samey' food during our stay in menorca, we booked ( which I suggest doing) for dinner on our last night. The restaurant is part of a small hotel and has lots of outside tables under shade. We were lucky enough to get a small table with views over the gardens/ smallholding s of the village and could watch the bats flying around as the sun set. The food was very reasonably priced by menorcan standards and what I would describe as rustic spanish. I had stuffed courgettes, skate wings in garlic and capers and orange cake- all delicious and freshly cooked in the kitchen. I wish we had found it sooner as I think we would have eaten there a lot more. The hotel also looks lovely as well.
