In short: Hotel Rural Binigaus Vell delivers very impressive accommodation with an emphasis on peace, quiet, and solitude. Measured in the five key categories* Binigaus Vell scores very well, receiving a very creditable average of 4.8.

The long story: Hotel Rural Binigaus Vell is located about 1km from the edge of the small town of Es Migjorn Gran, itself almost exactly equidistant between Mahon and Ciutadella (~25km), and a similar distance from the airport. The hotel benefits greatly from the separation and its isolation: the total lack of noise and light pollution creates an oasis of peace and calm. So, although the hotel is essentially in the middle of nowhere, it's still only a maximum of 30 minutes from pretty much anywhere and everywhere; perfect.

The hotel occupies what was originally a farm, suitably converted into luxury accommodation, with additional buildings added more recently to expand capacity and options. All are harmoniously set around a lovely, spacious, centerpiece pool and garden. There's plenty of onsite parking, which is good as it's likely most guests will have a car so that they can visit the rest of the island. For the adventurous, you can walk/hike the 2-3 miles down to the coast, to the beautiful Platja Binigaus, by way of the Cova de Coloms, and this also allows you to connect the famous Cami de Cavalls walking trails that circumnavigate Menorca.

The rooms are tastefully decorated, well appointed, and quite spacious. Breakfast is served in the main building and includes hot and cold options, plus a selection of local delicacies; the coffee is great and they have an industrial-strength juicer to deliver fresh orange juice. This facility also serves as a restaurant for optional evening meals; we ate there once and it was very good. The hotel can also prepare light lunches.

Sleep quality was, on the whole, excellent. We stayed six nights, early in the season, and so we didn't have people next to us at first. On the fourth night we had neighours for the first time, and to put it bluntly, they were a bit loud. Now, it's not the hotel's fault, some people are just naturally loud. However, the hotel proved their worth when I mentioned this and asked if it was possible for us to move: they checked the options, factoring in upcoming arrivals, and most graciously proceeded to upgrade and relocate us to the newer "deluxe" wing. Now, they certainly were not obligated to do this, I would have been happy just to relocate to a quieter room in the same class, and it was very, very nice of them to do it.

The hotel was also very helpful in finding us an option of a day sail, which, it still being fairly early in the season, was more difficult then I had originally imagined. All of the staff were really friendly, helpful, and professional.

The acid test (that is, would I return): absolutely, and I have already booked to go back in September..!

The hotel has spacious rooms and a huge outdoor space. The staff is extremely kind and helpful. The breakfast is outstanding, THe dinner is above expectations and prices are below what you may expect. The area is perfect as you are half way from Ciutadela or from Mahon. Nearby you have a beautiful beach - 40 min walk from the hotel or 3 min drive - and numerous paths for hiking.

Hotel is approached down narrow winding lanes to reveal a stunning restored farmstead consisting of main farmhouse with some rooms and where breakfast and dinner are served either inside or on the lovely terrace. Other rooms are dotted around the grounds in one storey farm buildings with individual smll patios. We stayed in a mid range room which had lovely vaulted ceilings, exposed brickwork, super comfy king sized bed and lovely bathroom. The grounds were incredibly looked after and landscaped, with the piece de resistance being the large shelving infinity pool with views over the fields and woods to the coast a few miles away. All the staff were delightful with great attentive service. Marie who welcomed us was a great font of knowledge and no request was too taxing for them. The breakfasts were great; they would prepare sandwiches and salads for lunch on request; and the food in the restaurant in the evening was incredible. You need to book by lunchtime if you want to have dinner but definitely recommend you do. If you are looking for tranquility yet a short drive from the beaches and main towns highly recommend this hotel.

We have stayed here previously and whilst full of praise then , the Binigaus Vell has shown even further improvement.
New bedrooms have been added, all to a very high standard and the relaxing, friendly atmosphere is like a blanket descending to cover all guests.
Wonderful swimming pool, good honesty bar, decent food including a very nice breakfast and a 20 minutes walk to Migorn Gran , which is a lovely atmospheric small town .
Staff at this hotel from the manager to the cleaning ladies are friendly, cheerful and helpful. Staff in reception exceedingly so. Yes it is true to say that you must book early. One thing to remember is that Spanish schools take their holidays from the second week of July to the second week of September.

Room tip: The new Superior rooms are fantastic.
