Nice price/value balance. Got upgraded to Suite with wonderful view to the port. Clean, nice and very helpful staff. Sufficient buffet breakfast (... good quality meals. Superb steak for dinner!!). Well located in the city and 10 minutes drive from airport. Maybe had the advantage of travelling off season.... We will come back.
Recommended.

It is indeed hard to define the Port Mahon and after a week there I can appreciate all the comments both positive and negative that are on these reviews. I found the staff friendly and would particularly mention Sabina in the restaurant and Martin the bar. However here is a good example of query 4*. Should a 4* hotel have one bar man no matter how good covering two bar on different floors. I think not. The hotel is clean the room was adequate but not luxurious and the food another dilemma. Is buffet ever the catering format for a 4* hotel. I think not. The food was generally good, particularly the breakfaasts and on one night a delicious very popular choice of Sole., In late September the hotel and for that matter the town lacks atmosphere. Perhaps springtime with the lovely coastal walks and the historic monuments which are everywhere on the island would be better.

If you want a quiet holiday in late September then you wont go wrong if you choose the Hotel Port Mahon in Mahon Minorca. The weather will still be warm - and sunny (most of the time), the cafes and restaurants will stiil be open, the tourist boats will still be running and the Church of St. Maria will still be holding its weekly organ concerts at 11.30 each morning, where , amidst the splendour of this Catalan Gothic 18th century building you can listen to (some !) of the 3210 pipes, created in 1809 by a Swiss genius and brought to the island safely thanks to a British Admiral.

My wife and I returned yesterday (29 Sept) with definiate thoughts of another visit, though it must be said that you can see the whole island's most interesting aspects in one day if you take advantage of the coach tour offered (£38) - a prehistoric site not quite up there with Stonehenge but mysterious, stare over the whole island from the top of Mt Torro (358m/ 1170 ft (roughly equal to the highest point in the Cotswolds) after viewing the monastery, take in a farm where you can watch them make the cheese with British cows, have lunch in the tiny seaside port of Fornells (maybe rubbing shoulders with King Carlos himself as he tucks into his lobster soup), and finally explore the narrow streets of the islands other capital Ciutadella.

Yes there are other things to see but we never strayed too far from the hotel finding much to see in Mao (Mahon) itself once you have mastered the correct roads into town, as the hotel is at the far end of the main port. If you are energetic you can try the 104 steps down to the harbour right outside the hotel and turn left and come back by road - but you will still have to climb up to the centre - gently. Avoid the bars by the water until you come to a floating restaurant where for 3 Euros more (18) than the others you will get a decent set meal with wine and coffee, whereas the others will charge you on top of your 15 Euros.

Later you can seek out the twice weekly market in Market Square and enjoy all the varied stalls run by several nationalities. Have a coffee at the small Market square cafe nearest the bus station close by: not at the flashier places on the other side of the square. There is another daily covered in market in the town centre : the goods on display will surprise you by their quality, whilst down below is a large supermarket where housewives do not need trolleys: they have baskets on wheels which they trail around like luggage !

Finally the hotel. Its very good but doesnt quite earn five stars mainly because we thought the food wasnt quite of the best. Now thats not to say there wasnt much variety. there certainly was at breakfast and at dinner. But both were buffet style and you are never going to get the best quality that way. Nevertheless we ate well every day, enjoyed the wine and the free breakfast cava, and had the advantage that the week we were there the evening meal, normally 15 Euros, was FREE !! So we saved around £200. I took many photos of the offerings so if anyone is interested please get in touch. We paid extra for our room on the corner front with a balcony that overlooked the harbour, a constant source of interest especially when large liners (up to 55,000 tons) appeared. The room was comfortable - if you like firm mattresses - kept spotlessly clean, and had a sitting area as well as a well designed bathroom, with shower over the bath. For British TV buffs we found BBC Wales (!!!!), BBC London, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5. You could also watch CNN and Sky, though the latter will apperently be re routed in October so might not be available. Eurosport showed British rugby - in Italian !! The staff were friendly, some spoke good English, and the table service was top class.

And finally : holiday 'look alikes'. Come on, we all do it. The Hotel has the best. The England soccer manager played the electric violin one night whilst Liverpool fans will flock there if I say that the Head Waiter looked just like Rafael Benitez and had the appropriate Christian name - JESUS..........

Go there at this time of the year and RELAX by the pool, enjoy the lunch snacks and the lager beer and forget about the credit crunch.............

We stayed for one week at Hotel Port Mahon from 14th September. We checked in at reception and were given our keys and told our room was on the second floor and left to take our own luggage to the room in a lift that was only big enough for one person and one case (two trips needed). On enquiring, we were told there was no bell boy to help, no matter how old you are. In the Sovereign brochure and I quote "This Hotel has many distinguished clients who return year after year" I thought this was a poor start.

Thr room was nice but small, as was the bathroom. The food quality in general was good but cold as often as it was warm. The service in general was not very good. The staff that were there, we found to be very nice. It was obvious that cutbacks had been made. There was no pool attendant. On the days that it was sunny if you wanted a parasol you had to ask for one. There was no service for drinks or snacks on the pool or garden area. I had the chance to to speak to a number of guests who had visited the hotel in previous years and they all agreed the hotel was no where near as good as previous years. In fact some complained to the staff.

This hotel is in a stunning location and is badly let down by Seth Hotels. I would recommend the directors of this company to go and stay at a proper 4 Star hotel, then return and put this hotel back where it belongs at the top of the list of places to return.

We stayed for a week at the Port Mahon hotel from 5.09.09 and it was sunny every day. Apparently the rain started the day after we left. The fine weather meant that we didn't need to dwell on the inadequacies of our accommodation as we were outside during the day either in the garden or visiting other places. We paid extra for a room with a balcony but the room was small with a lack of drawers for our stuff and a very tatty minibar and the bathroom was surely the tiniest I have ever seen in a hotel calling itself four stars. We would not have been comfortable with this accommodation had the weather been bad and we had been stuck in. Maybe it's best to book one of the suites.
There was a good selection of food at breakfast although most of the fruit came out of cans. One morning, we were brought a pot of tea whose traditional Spanish lukewarm quality was aggravated by the absence of a lid on the pot. The waiter said they didn't have enough lids!
We tried the buffet dinner only once. There wasn't much wrong with the food, or much right with it, but there was no atmosphere. Best to go down the 104 steps if you can manage them to a choice of restaurants by the harbour. We went to La Roma (watch out for huge starters), Il Porto (not cheap) and the Greek place by the bottom of the steps.
We hired a car from Avis down by the port where the cruise ships tie up. Driving around Menorca is easy as the roads are generally good quality and fairly empty. We liked visiting Fornells fishing village, Es Grau and the countryside walks around the Albufera lake. Most of the big resorts are brash places.
This hotel relies on its superb location overlooking the beautiful harbour of Mahon, together with the attractive gardens and pool, rather than the quality of its accommodation and service. In our opinion it is only pretending to be a four-star hotel compared with many others we have stayed in around the world.

We booked for a week but left after a couple of days , partly due to poor weather but also lack of anything to do - no indoor pool / gym etc . Everything , decor , sunbeds , service , somewhat tired even the bar was lacklustre although at least it was quiet and quite a good location . Felt like hot food around 3.30 p.m. on second day but room service for hot food stops around 2 p.m. until 7.30 p.m. so it's a cheese sandwich or nothing . Whilst the harbour area is pleasant there is not much choice and again nothing really seems to open until 7.30 . We sat down at a table at a place in the harbour around 2.30 and even though some people were sat down ( presumably ending lunch ? ) we were advised they did not start serving until 7.30 - theme going here ! When we went to check out around 2 p.m. we rang to have someone bring our bags down only to be told there was nobody available , all very half hearted . Very dissappointing . Sovereign were helpful in finding a quick flight home thankfully !

Yes we did have a sea view with a balcony............in one of the rooms that had not been upgraded. It was disgusting. Horrid old carpet - that stuff you get in kitchens. A filthy minbar with the cover on the front door missing. Nasty chipped furniture and the polystyrene ceiling tiles (yes..polystyrene!! in a 4* hotel) in the bathroom were stained brown. We were bitterly disappointed as the photo in the brochure shows the upgraded rooms, which are lovely. So beware the corridor of rooms still to be done are not mentioned in the brochures. Why did they upgrade the rooms with no balconies, and also the rooms overlooking the garden, but not the rooms with the stunnng view over the magnificent harbour?
We were promised a room change and our rep had left a message with reception. When we went to reception to arrange this, the receptionist looked at us vaguely and said...well you are only here for a week. NO..... this was to be a special two week holiday AND we were on a dinner bed and breakfast base. The upgrade room we were offered - staff did not even have the courtesy to show us, just handed the key and told to go and have a look - was overlooking the garden not the harbour. We did stay in the 'old' room only because it had a wonderful view from the balcony, and couldn't face the prospect of having to go to reception every day to ask for a change. What really bugged us was other guests we were chatting to and who were only staying for a week on a bed and breakfast basis were allocated better rooms. So just goes to show if you book for 2 weeks dinner bed and breakfast and a balcony - they have got your business and aren't interested.
We liked the pool area, although again for a 4* there was no waiter service at the poolside. Also the terrace for breakfast (enjoyed the selection), and for dinner had amazing views over the harbour. We didn't mind the buffet, but once or twice we went to the wonderful restaurants at the harbour.
On balance, after ranting on about the hotel, we enjoyed wandering about Port Mahon and Minorca as we were looking for a quiet holiday - and we are verging on the 'grumpy old people' age!!!!
Certainly the price of the hotel (fairly pricey) does not reflect the standard offered.
