“wonderful hotel and town”
Reviewed July 16, 2013

Stayed one week at Don Carlos, everything was as expected except the a la carte experience which is more a fine dining experience than the usual English version of a la carte. Not our choice but excellent if it is your taste. All staff wonderfully helpful and friendly, all requests met happily and buffet food choices were excellent. As we had early return hotel arranged for us to have cold breakfast before opening time. We feel that you would need to be deeply into five star luxury not to appreciate this wonderful hotel ,and its staff. I would like to add that some complaints about the beach appear to be based on a misunderstanding of a very special ecosystem which is important to the beaches and waters of the area, and is fully explained on notice boards all around the area. The local beach bar just across the river bridge had some of the best rock and pop we have seen on any of our med holidays, and again friendly and helpful staff. great place for a holiday. We are already planning to return next year.

Theres probalby not a lot I can write about the Don Carlos that has not already been said..but here goes anyway...

We arrived at lunch time and I must say check in was very quick and we were soon in our suite.. or so we thought.. We had booked a suite with a sea view , high floor but we were given a Preferential suite on the first floor.. To be honest I wasnt over the moon with this as it was one of the suites with a jaccuzi bath outside on the decking. We had no intention of using it as you can be seen by everyone in the pool area as these suites for some strange reason have glass panels on the balcony and no its not one way glass either. Anyway as we started unpacking we were called by reception to be told that this suite was for one night only as they had made a mistake in our booking. No problem, we were glad that we were being moved. The Preferential suites are big but there seems to be a lot of wasted space. As you go in the suite theres a curtain that runs along side the wardrobe area. I think this is to close this space off a bit ? There were 3 wardrobes but not enough hangers. 3 small drawers and that was it apart from the bedside drawers which were small . The main loungue area had a settee in it, a chair in the corner that looked lost and 2 tvs . I really cant see the point of 2 tvs? They were on opersite walls. On the bedroom side of the room there was a long shelf where put the kettle . The fridge was hidden in the wardrobe together with the safe.. both free of charge.

We changed rooms next day to a regular sea view suite and this was a lot better for us.. at least with the bath being inside we werent going to be the entertainment if we decided to use it. The shower in both suites is a sort of rain/ tropical shower.. the water falls in big drops is the best way I can describe it .

Meals were really good, we didnt bother with the one night in the gala restaurant.. you had to book and some people who said they had dined there werent too impressed. There was plenty of choice at every meal. we were half board but a lot of people were all inclusive. It was always red hot and plates were cleared away quickly.

Theres the usual early morning sun bed bagging going on.. You have no chance of getting one of the super duper beds with curtains round it unless you are up very early. It is a bit annoying though that many of these beds were left for hours on end and not in use.. just beacuse someone had put their towel and a paper back on it.. Worse still were the selfish people who not only had a super bed to use but also had a couple of sunbeds too ! The hotel really should try and do something about this.

The entertainment most nights was bit of a mixed bag. probably because of the different nationalities stopping there meant all announcements were made in 3 languages.

The staff all work hard and nothing is too much trouble for them.. I wouldnt hesitate to book this hotel again as its an adult only haven and the sea views from the balconies ahve to be seen to be believed.

Room Tip: sea view is a a must..

Stayed at the Fiesta Hotel Don Carlos end of Jun/beginning of Jul for 10 nights. We arrived and in less than 5 minutes we were checked in and in our room. We had a sea view room (room 304) although I would class it as a partial view - however we were not on holiday to stay in our room, so it was of little consequence. As it is classed as a couples hotel, it would be nice to have a double bed rather than the usual '2 singles pushed together'. From day one, we new we had picked the right hotel. Staff were great, food excellent - make sure you take advantage of the a la carte, drinks were very good and you could taste the alcohol, and Alvis was on top form (chow chow Micky Mouse). The Marina is approx 15 mins walk from the hotel, which we walked on most days. We took full advantage of the ferry service to Ibiza town (€12) and to Cala Longa (€6). Taxi back to hotel from Cafe Mambo (San Antonio) costs €36 and from Ibiza Town €35. The little beach is accessed via the steps from the hotel and the sea is great to swim in. The walk over the tops to Cala Longa is great, but not for the faint hearted.
We are both in our 40's, but age is no problem in this hotel - everyone mixes and gets on with their holiday. This was our fifth time Ibiza and it is by far the best hotel and resort that we have stayed in - we will be going back.

I stayed at the Fiesta Don Carlos for a week with my boyfriend (we are both in our 20s) and neither of us have a bad word to say. All the staff, especially Aivis and Cecile who do the entertainment, were great and very friendly. The rooms were lovely and were cleaned every day and the food was excellent. We made a lot of friends there and will definitely be coming back.

I usually know what I want to call my review and exactly what to say as there were parts of this stay we loved and parts that we absolutely didnt. This time however I really have mixed feelings.

My husband and I stayed for 9 nights in June/July. We had read all the reviews about the make over and we knew Santa Eulalia was meant to be lovely so were looking forward to our stay in Ibiza.

A lot of the other reviews cover off a lot of the positives and I hope that people read my review in the spirit that it is intended.

So to start with what is good - The hotel is situated in peaceful and pretty Santa Eulalia. From the moment we arrived until the time we left we received extremely good service from all staff. A particular mention should go to the entertainment staff. They work so hard and with such enthusiasm. They also pitch things about right so you dont feel hassled or obliged to join in if you dont want too. We were a little nervous on the first morning when an over enthusiastic holiday maker was encouraging 15 people to join water aerobics so it could be done with Aivis wearing a mankini. At this point we thought have we come to Butlins. Thankfully however this was a one off.

We booked a suite and the room was extremely large with a great big balcony. The bathroom was great with a lovely powerful shower.

The pool area was really pleasant and there were plenty of loungers for all. You could also have massages by the pool provided by Massage Beach. They were great value and really professional.

There are nice little touches which include the cocktail and paella making, the area to put your old books so someone else can enjoy your well thumbed novel and the comfortable double beds to lounge in by the pool.

What really made the holiday were the people. At first I thought it was more geared to people in their 60's but actually there was a good mix. There were couples in their 20's, as well as in there 60's. As a 30 something couple we didnt feel out of place. We enjoyed the balance of polite conversation with other couples as well as having plenty of opportunity to enjoy our holiday ourselves.

Now to be really honest. A lot of the reviews talk about the stunning makeover that this hotel had had. In my opinion it would be likened to having botox eg its had a bit of work but only a temporary fix.

The hotel has had new furnishings in the communal areas and the rooms have been made over. If you scratch the surface though it hasnt been done to the highest standard eg if you look at the fire doors they have just merely painted over the doors in bright white, painting over the hinges and the fittings. The restaurant has new tables and chairs but all of the areas serving food are quite dated. The furnishings already look quite tired and some of them look like old chairs with new covers on top.

As many reviews have mentioned there is no wifi in the rooms and you can only use an extremely slow free wifi facility in reception. The hotel has signs everwhere that this hotel is four star superior. Surely in this day and age wifi should be available throughout.

The hotel also gives a mixed message. It publicises that it wants to encourage its guests to be enviromentally friendly. However in our suite we had a massive jacuzzi bath requiring gallons of water to use the jacuzzi element.

The rooms do not have that much storage and there was quite a lot of dead space. The balcony could of accomodated a larger table, or some loungers. We also had two TVs that were completely unnecessary as they faced each other. You also had to buy a comfortable pillow. You were given a pillow that was completely lumpy gratis but if you wanted one which no doubt would be comfortable, you had to choose from the pillow menu at an additional cost.

With regard to the food. This was not four star superior. Quite honestly it was like a canteen.
We had booked a half board stay. There was a good choice at breakfast but fresh orange juice should be available and not at an additional 3 euro cost.

You can eat at the Bella Vista Restaurant within the hotel grounds three times. This was fully booked so we were able to make two reservations. This was ok however the decor in this dining room was lovely and should be the standards that they are looking to achieve in the rest of the hotel. We therefore chose to eat out in the evening for the majority of our stay.

You are fairly limited to staying by the pool as the beach immediately by the hotel isnt that pleasant. You would need to take a walk/drive to find a nicer beach.

Finally and probably the thing that bothered us the most. The hotel was fairly clean. The carpets in the communal areas by the rooms were quite grubby by the end of the day but I think that was more about the quality of the carpet. You couldnt argue that they werent cleaning as you usually tripped over a staff member hoovering at 08.00 in the morning or cleaning the staircase. However to clean they used the most disgusting and powerful spray. No doubt the hotel would argue this type of spray would keep bugs at bay but I am sure most men would have no nasal hair by the end of the holiday as it was so powerful. The smell really hits the back of your throat.

The thing is and this is why I have the mixed feelings. The Fiesta Don Carlos is clearly one of the best hotels in Santa Eulalia and probably what drives the great reviews. If you walk along to the harbour and see hotels such as the Orquidea and The Riomar you are truly grateful to be staying where you are. Hotels just dont have the budget to invest what is genuinely needed to make them four star superior. My husband and I are off to Vegas in September and whilst you absolutely cannot directly compare the two, as they are two different experiences, when the room rate for a truly five star experience is significantly less than what we paid here, you can understand why more and more people are opting for this type of holiday.

Would we stay here again. I really dont know.
