If you are anywhere near Gaucin eat lunch here, its on the railway platform just across the river. A walk along the river bank and a swim followed our visit, and reminded us of England in summer by the Thames.

Ingredients and care with quality and presentation were really impressive, the whole experience an absolute joy.

“A hidden gem”

We ate here on Sunday 18th September, on the day before we returned to the UK after a two week holiday in Gaucin. Located in an old railway building at Gaucin railway station in El Colmenar (12km or so from Gaucin village) this restaurant served us the best meal of our two week holiday, and in fact one of the best meals I've ever had in many many trips to Spain. Perhaps because of its location it's not very well known, and doesn't yet feature in guidebooks, but it's well worth the short drive. (To get there from Gaucin drive south west past the Repsol in Gaucin on the A405, turn right onto the road to El Colmenar. When you reach El Colmenar follow the main (wide) road through the village, over the level crossing and take the right turn on the roundabout alongside the railway. You'll see the restaurant after 100m, with a large car park in front of it).

We ate in most of the restaurants in Gaucin, including La Fuente and Fructosa, both of which were good, but a long way off the quality and service of Caserio Ananda.
Despite being the only customers on a Sunday lunchtime the place still had a great atmosphere - it's tastefully decorated, every detail is thought through, yet still feels very relaxed (in fact my friend felt so relaxed she sunbathed on the lawn between courses!). The owner Angeles literally did everything: took our orders, made the food, served us, & washed up afterwards, all with real warmth and excitement that we were enjoying her food. She is simply amazing!

So, the food:
Aperitif: rice with fresh oregano from the garden, and the most delicious bread.
Starters: tomato & mozzarella salad, with tomatoes & ruccola grown in the garden; peppers roasted with garlic (these were caramelized in their own juices)
Mains: Fillet of beef with a creamy courgette stack that perfectly complimented the beef and potatoes sprinkled with charcoal from the fire; and artichoke hearts.
Desert: Crepe cooked over orange wood with an orange & lime syrup; chocolate fondant cake with a berry sauce; and the best aged cheese with Manilva raisins that are soaked for a year with star anise.
Digestif: what we think was a damson gin (and was complimentary!)

When I asked after the meal for a tea, Angeles ran to the garden and picked some lemon balm to make tea with, which was delicious, as was the sublime coffee, and sherry that followed!

My partner is vegetarian (no meat, no fish), and despite the fact that this restaurant specializes in grilled meats, it was by far the best vegetarian food he had in two weeks: there was plenty of choice and no confusion over what being vegetarian meant. There was also no need to let the restaurant know in advance about his vegetarianism, as is necessary with many other restaurants in Gaucin.

I admit it's not the cheapest restaurant around, however I do think for the quality of the food and service it's great value for money. We had a very boozy 3/4 course lunch and it cost 45 Euros each including 10% tip.

All in all you'd be crazy to miss the opportunity to eat at Caserio Ananda - I can only see it getting more and more popular and even better.
