We've just come back from an 8 day holiday to Portugal-the purpose being, to attend a family wedding. Because there were 13 of us, all family, we were looking for apartments which were well equipped and spacious enough to be able to hide in your rooms if you got sick of your family. These apartments hit the nail on the head. They were so big, I got lost twice going from the bedroom to the bathroom. As the apartments are privately owned, they are all decorated differently. Ours in particular was adorned with trinkets dating back to about 1973. I was particularly fond of the vase shaped into the figure of a horse mid-gallop. And the fake flowers covered in dust were a real treat for the eyes. The bedrooms were sparse, and the beds were like prison beds, I have never slept on such a hard mattress. At one point during the night I genuinely considered just lying on the marble floor to sleep as I think that may have been comfier. That said, we were really impressed with the apartment as a whole, and I wouldn't let the hard mattress put you off. Just bring your own if you ever visit here, I'm sure customs would allow you to if you explained your predicament.
The pool area was a good size, with a children's pool at one end, and it wasn't particularly busy so there was always a sunbed to be found. The lifts are really old-school though. You have to pull the lift door open to step inside. I wish we'd known this on the first day, we stood in front of it for about an hour and a half waiting for it to do it for us automatically, Portuguese technology is so lazy.
If you're coming here expecting entertainment, you won't find it. Most people are in bed by about 8.30. On the second night, 10 of us adults had congregated on my sisters balcony at about 10pm, and were having a discussion about genetically modified food, when we were told to keep the noise down by the chap in the apartment above. So, if you're planning on having a chat on your balcony past about 6pm, be warned. Especially if you want to discuss massive tomatoes.
I can't let this review end without a special shout out to Ed who was the (I think) manager/chef/pool boy/bar man/cleaner/general dogsbody of the complex. He was fantastic, so friendly, and his English was better than mine. No problem was too small, and when me and my husband lost our key, he quickly replaced it. And then didnt bat an eyelid when we lost the replacement key...and then found both keys in the inside lining of my handbag.
I'd have no hesitation in recommending this place if you want a spacious, self catering singles/couples holiday which is quite near to the centre. And if you're fond of ceramic ornaments dating back to the 70's, you'll literally be in your element.
