I've re-booked the Alvorferias again for 2013, for the 4th year running. For the following reasons:

1) Its affordable
2) Efficiently run
3) Alvor is a lovely place and most of all
4) Because of the Sports/Leisure activities run by the Alvorferias.

If you have young children, they will have no excuses not to get involved with all the fun activities run on a daily basis, mornings and afternoons.

Tennis (Claude the activities Team leader is an exceptional tennis coach, great with the kids. I think he may have worked as a pro coach in France) These lessons are FREE!

The fun water polo with the kids and adults is fab, great fun and a great way to get to know the other holiday makers. Darts, french boules (bowls), and arts classes and various other activities.

For adults there is also an introduction to Yoga/Stretching Sessions and adults running on the beach...getting fit and healthy....a holiday here, for adults who need to get into a fitness regime, you will have no excuses, and its all fun. No sweat!

Read through the other comments, and draw your own opinions, the apartments are 3 star however the kids club and particularly the sports activities are 5 Star....

If you need to get your kids or yourself, fit and active...this is the place....mind you, you can always relax at the pool and have a great holiday anyways...

Tip: I always book through Alpharooms, making a great saving as compared with booking with Tour operators....Go for it and happy holidays wherever you go : )

Tremendous value for money self catering accomodation.
We were in a one double bed apartment which was massive, ok the furniture was dated but are ideal for the time we spent in the appartment.
Unfortunately the complex was closed ( out of season ) so everything was closed , but the staff in the office were helpful.
Overall a great place to stay if you want Value For Money.

I stayed here from October 13th for a week with my partner and two children aged 11 and 6. Firstly the apartments. Yes as previous reviewers have said these apartments are in need of redecoration and the furniture updating but they are large and more than suitable for your needs. They are clean and are cleaned during your staff. I was witness one day to the cleaners doing our room. We had no choice but to watch with our feet up underneath us on the bed and sofa as they came in and just did it around us. If they had waited 5 mins we were actually leaving for the day. The impression they gave was that we should have left when they entered when in fact they should have waited for us. I was pleased to see a double bed but it was the most uncomfortable bed I have ever slept on. This is only bed that left me with bruises! I often woke up during the night with parts of me numb! The kitchen were well equipped to self cater if you wanted to. We cooked lunch on the one day it rained. We stayed half board and although the food is not excellent it is edible and will suffice if you didn't want to go to the town to eat. Breakfast did not include the normal sausages or bacon but there was ham so all was not lost! I can't see how half board would work in high season. The dining area is very small as is the food area itself. We did have to wait for a table on one night and if I would have had to do that every day I wouldn't. The food is not good enough to wait for. The 'clubhouse' is situated under the dining area and again is very small. When this hotel is at full capacity there is no way even a quarter of the guests could get in there. The childrens entertainers (2 ) were good and did there best but they started at 9pm which is far too late for little ones to start running around during the games! They played musical chairs on silly plastic chairs that bent if the kids tried to sit on them two at a time...as they do in the game to get a chair. They did have a parrot show for the kids and as I've seen them before I knew what to expect. the show iteself lasted about 15 mins, the pictures they took of everyone with the birds beforehand lasted longer! And although the pictures were reasonable priced it was a shame they didn't put the same effort into the show. I will give them credit where its due though...they clearly loved their birds and the birds were obviously aware of that.
I wouldn't allow my children to go in the pool. The water always looked murky with cigarette butts on the bottom, a plastic bag and other small items of dirt. I did witness someone hoovering the bottom of the pool but he was clearly patially sighted to have missed it all! I then complained to the rep who suggested the cigarette butts had blown in with the wind. However the problem was not how they got in but how they should have been removed. She did tell reception but nothing was done during our stay. And as they had the facilities to clean the pool it was disappointing to see that they didn't even after a complaint.
The town of Alvor itself is lovely. The restaurants and bar owners are welcoming and friendly. We ate at the O Arco da Velha and can thoroughly recommend the monkfish cataplana...a must! Alvor is a fishing village so is obviously big on fish, its all fresh and selected at your table even in the smallest of restaurants. The walk to the town takes about 10 mins. The walk back is uphill but its not steep and didn't hinder us at all. It took perhaps 5 mins more. The beach is nothing short of stunning. Do take a walk along to the end where you'll find more private coves and areas that fill with just enough water to create splash pools for the kids. You can relax in the knowledge that they can play safely while you enjoy the views. There is a free bus to the beach but we always took a cab which was 4 euros each way...we just find them more comfortable and we can plan the day to our timetable rather than worrying about missing the last bus home.
The area of Alvor is more suited to families and people not looking for night clubs on your doorstep. There are quite a few Irish bars, were we spent most of our nights. Most of them had a singer/comedian on to keep you entertained. Our favourite was the Irish Inn..he was funny and although at times he could be a little raw he involved the kids in some fun too!
I can't find fault with Alvor or the people. It is very friendly and welcoming and well worth the visit. But I can't recommend this hotel nor will I ever return even on a cheap break!

Room Tip: If the beds are all the same then there really is no good rooms!

we stayed at club alvorferias from 17/10/12 to 24/10/12.The room was clean and was cleaned regularly. The gripe i have was that the majority of the facilities on the over the road part that we were in were closed,ie swimming pool, sun loungers, restuarant, etcThe reception,,over the bridge, the otherside of a main road were very non commital when asked for information. We found out through a cleaner that the hotel was closing for the season at the end of October and it was running on skeleton staff. Alvor is a beautiful town well worth visiting but be warned find another hotel that apreciates its guests and looks after them

Room Tip: for a one bedroomed apartment the lounge was massive in need of renovation and damp,I believe that o...

Stayed here for eight nights adequate accommodation near beach and town. very clean and staff very helpful. The complex like the town/village is in need of a serious fit out, stuck in the sixties, there seems to be a reluctance to move on, like a lot of things in portugal. For three men on a golfing trip fine, wouldnt bring my wife there,

Room Tip: I presume they are all the same dated tiles and units, one block backs on to a mini farm animal nois...

We needed a break from the bad weather which had dogged the UK for nearly all the summer so this came up in Portugal and off we went.
Appartment was good in size and reasonably clean, unfortunatly the utilities i.e.were not upto scratch.
The cooker, only one hob worked, bathroom shelving, shower head were nearly off the wall, in general a considerale ammount of TLC was required.

We stayed at the Clube Alvorferias for a week in September. The apartments are set in lovely well maintained gardens and were very spacious and clean although a bit dated but how much time do you spend in them?. There was always plenty of hot water for showers and the cleaners came in every other day. We were over the bridge and it did seem a little bit quieter than the reception side, we did have to pay €1 for the sun lounger mats. The apartments are approx 5 mins walk from Alvor centre and 10 mins from sea but a nice walk.
