After spending months searching for our perfect holiday destination we chose the Pestana Dom Joao II Beach Hotel for its location and family friendly facilities. We booked in March for our holiday in July, only to be told a week before flying out that we had been double booked and that we didn't have a room.

We were very disappointed and what should have been a week of looking forward to our holiday ended up being stressful and worrying about where we were going to end up.

Thankfully we eventually negotiated a stay at their sister Pestana Palm Gardens apartments in Carvoeiro which were lovely (though without much in the way of childrens' entertainment).

Just be wary about booking as it seems we weren't the only ones to be discarded at the hotel, judging by other recent reviews.

We booked to stay in Dom Joa 2 for a wedding. We were told a few days before travelling that the hotel we booked 4 months ago was overbooked and we could stay in the delfim or have our money back! It was too late to book another hotel so we went ahead. The rooms were clean but dated. The food is almost the same every night. Worryingly, we met a lot of people who booked the Dom Joa (lovely, definitely 5 star hotel) and were told they are now staying in the delfim and the taxi driver told us this happens every day. It may not be an issue if you don't mind where you stay but if you do, try elsewhere. I hadn't heard of hotel overbooking before!!

The hotel is situated on a lovely beach, it also has two large swimming pools with free beds, we found that you did have to search some days around the pool & gardens for them, nevertheless there isn't a shortage. I found the Reception Staff to be extremely accommodating, sometimes working under pressure -as there does seem to be a problem with double bookings - the group have other premises in the area which are offered as a second choice (with all inclusive deals). We spoke to a number of people who had been placed in this predicament.
Personally we had a lovely huge apartment/ villa, which was modern and clean, towels etc changed every day. Our friends however had an apartment the other side of the complex, this also was clean & spacious although it can only be described as 'tired'when it comes to the decor. The hotel is located approx 15 minutes walk from Alvor - taxis are situated outside and cost about 3 euros. There is also a bus stop directly outside for all local & main bus routes.
Alvor is a quaint fishing village which has lovely restaurant and bars, we didn't have a bad meal whilst we were there. We' ll definitely retun to Alvor again.

Room Tip: Ask for the refurbished villas

If you want a review of this hotel see my previous review as we booked on our previous experience which was very positive. Unfortunately this time we were unable to stay at this hotel as within a week of check in we were informed that our room was double booked. As a family who were looking forward so much and paid a lot of money to stay in a hotel we knew was good to be told that we were being located to another hotel in another resort miles away from a beach was totally soul destroying!
After contacting pestana direct we were told that there was a room at a sister hotel in carvoeiro which I have given a favourable review. Thankfully we weren't offered a room in pestana delfin as I think this an exercise in filling this inferior hotel up.
Rant over!
