“Golfers Paradise”
Reviewed May 18, 2013

This was our second year at Dom Joao and we intend going back next year.
The staff are very professional and friendly and the Hotel is very clean.
We had the choice of 5 great golf courses all belonging to the Pestana group.
Drinks are a bit pricey and the breakfast whilst adequate could do with some more imagination.
We booked our trip with Your Golf Travel who picked us up at the airport and took us to our golf locations on time all included in the cost.
Whilst his was our 2nd golfing trip to Dom Joao some of my playing partners are considering a family holiday at this hotel in the near future.
Looking forward to next year already.

Just returned from a week at the Dom Joao and this is not 4* we arrived to a nice lobby, booked into a nice room so thought ok this is good. Breakfast was ok on day one but went downhill from there, cooked breakfast consisted of under cooked eggs, boiled, scrambled, fried, no bacon or beans etc some mixed fruit a cereals, if you fancy a lay in which I am sure some do on holiday prepare to go hungry as most items are not replenished. Pool is very cold, sea salt water and dirty thus very empty. The bar is over priced with the most miserable bar man and this opinion was shared by numerous guests in the hotel saying that the receptionists are not much better. The rooms are good and cleaned every day. The toilets off reception were awful the odour of drains in the evening meant they were a no go. The beach is lovely but is 12 euro pp for a bed, can I suggest do a left and about a ten minute walk you get to a beautiful part with lovely coves. All in all if you want somewhere to sleep this is the hotel for you, if you want friendly staff, a bar, good food, good entertainment and a enjoyable stay this is not the hotel for you, there are so many better hotels. Alvor is lovely to eat out and enjoy. We had more negative experiences in the hotel but I won't go on. The best thing about the hotel are the friendly chatty guests.

Well located b&b for the golf . Clean room . Bad breakfast , overpriced bar @ 4 £ a pint , considering its only 1£ a pint in the cactus bar with good entertainment . Lovely restaurants in alvor ,all in 3star hotel with 5 star prices .

Room Tip: Get one in a different hotel?

This is a good base. The hotel is quite clean and the grounds are beautiful though the pool looks rather manky and in need of either a coat of paint or a good clean...it was also very cold... the decking on the terrace by the restaurant was in need of a bit of tlc as it was pealing and very flakey.
The breakfasts were ok tho the fried eggs where done in large batches and left in bain maries until they solidified. Bacon wasnt on every day but those awful tinned sausages were. The rest was quite nice and a good selection. Unfortunately the staff did not replenish the stocks sufficiently and when it became busy there were no plates, juice had run out, bread for toast run out etc etc.
The rooms were very clean but the air conditioning wasnt up to much. We arrived for 7 days on 7 May 2013 and we were hot in rooms and had airconditioning down to 10c and it wasnt enough.
The downside of this hotel was the cleaining/housekeeping staff who, when we asked for an iron and ironing board, brought them up to our room, and thought it was acceptable to come into our room unannounced on two occasions, once when we were in bed in the morning and second time when i was just in a towel and drying my hair. The first occasion we jumped up quick to cover ourselves and she just apologised and came in anyway and took the iron and ironing board away.... how rude... the second time she got chased and we left it outside our room for collection.......there must have been only one iron and ironing board in the place...
Having said that it wasnt the worse place we have stayed in. The view from our room wasnt great but we got over that.
Overall it was a nice place to stay.

Room Tip: ask for a sea view on the top floor the view is amazing

We are return visitors to this hotel, we travelled with a toddler. This hotel is not very suitable for toddlers, a lot of steps. This is two very small lifts so at peak times you could be waiting a while to get to a different floor. We lost an item of clothing in the spa and with the language difficulties it was impossible to explain to the staff there. There was also a problem with the water .. It was discoloured and left a yellow scum in the bathtub and sink we were not given a satisfactory explanation. We also had a problem with a key card and the reception staff were very rude in dealing with the issue. I asked about services in the immediate area I.e a hairdresser.. The reception staff had no idea that there was one located at the back of the hotel., also the side gates are locked because of a security issue, if these were open it would make life a lot easier for people with buggys.. I thought the security reason was quite silly as the gates to villas next door is wide open and this leads to the hotel grounds! They just don't seem very accommodating ..
There just seemed be a lot of small issues this year.. Was quite disappointed after this visit.

The Dom Joao is a nice hotel and regarded as one of the best in the area by the locals. If I was writing the review in 2003 rather than 2013 I would say it was excellent but it is rather old fashioned in some ways and looks like it belongs to an earlier era. Having said that it is very clean, the facilities are pretty good, the location on the beach is fantastic and generally the staff are polite and helpful.

The bedrooms are a reasonable size and we had a sea view room which is well worth the money. Make sure you get a room on the 3rd floor or higher or you could end up looking out on some weird terrace type building blocking your view to the sea. The balconies on the higher floors are a bit small (the first floor being the largest) but the view does seem better. In common with most European hotels there is no tea or coffee making facilities in the room.

The location of the hotel is right on the beach and only a 10 to 15 minute walk to the outskirts of the town. Turn left out of the hotel and then right at the roundabout past Mister Alvor restaurant (worth a try) then next left. Follow the road and you will get to the town. If you don't fancy the walk there is a taxi rank right outside the hotel and it will cost €3.0 to €3.5 to get to town.

We stayed B&B and there is plenty of choice from the usual variety of eggs, baon (every other day), mini franks, beans, etc as well as cereal, fresh fruit and cold meats and cheeses. The staff are OK but a little slow in replenishing especially in the last 30 minutes or so.

We only ate in the restaurant once on our firts night although the meal was OK at €65 for 2 x 2 courses and a couple of drinks was the most expensive meal we had all week. Beware if you decide to have the buffet it is €54 per person (excl drinks) but it is 3 for 2!

The swimming pool is a fair sized with a kids pool next to it and there were plenty of sunbeds around the immaculate grounds (although we did arrive early May and overall the resort was quiet). Beach towels were available from the hotel.

To get to the beach you exit the hotel and walk up and over the small sand dune and you are there. You need to pay for the sunbeds on the beach - with the wind break and sunshade it was €12 per day.

Overall we had a really pleseant stay at the Dom Joao and would certainly consider going back if we went back to Alvor

Room Tip: Ugrade to a seaview and try to get the 3rd floor or highr for the best views
