Pestana Dom Joao II
Ranked #4 of 24 Hotels in Alvor

We are return visitors to this hotel, we travelled with a toddler. This hotel is not very suitable for toddlers, a lot of steps. This is two very small lifts so at peak times you could be waiting a while to get to a different floor. We lost an item of clothing in the spa and with the language difficulties it was impossible to explain to the staff there. There was also a problem with the water .. It was discoloured and left a yellow scum in the bathtub and sink we were not given a satisfactory explanation. We also had a problem with a key card and the reception staff were very rude in dealing with the issue. I asked about services in the immediate area I.e a hairdresser.. The reception staff had no idea that there was one located at the back of the hotel., also the side gates are locked because of a security issue, if these were open it would make life a lot easier for people with buggys.. I thought the security reason was quite silly as the gates to villas next door is wide open and this leads to the hotel grounds! They just don't seem very accommodating ..
There just seemed be a lot of small issues this year.. Was quite disappointed after this visit.

The Dom Joao is a nice hotel and regarded as one of the best in the area by the locals. If I was writing the review in 2003 rather than 2013 I would say it was excellent but it is rather old fashioned in some ways and looks like it belongs to an earlier era. Having said that it is very clean, the facilities are pretty good, the location on the beach is fantastic and generally the staff are polite and helpful.

The bedrooms are a reasonable size and we had a sea view room which is well worth the money. Make sure you get a room on the 3rd floor or higher or you could end up looking out on some weird terrace type building blocking your view to the sea. The balconies on the higher floors are a bit small (the first floor being the largest) but the view does seem better. In common with most European hotels there is no tea or coffee making facilities in the room.

The location of the hotel is right on the beach and only a 10 to 15 minute walk to the outskirts of the town. Turn left out of the hotel and then right at the roundabout past Mister Alvor restaurant (worth a try) then next left. Follow the road and you will get to the town. If you don't fancy the walk there is a taxi rank right outside the hotel and it will cost €3.0 to €3.5 to get to town.

We stayed B&B and there is plenty of choice from the usual variety of eggs, baon (every other day), mini franks, beans, etc as well as cereal, fresh fruit and cold meats and cheeses. The staff are OK but a little slow in replenishing especially in the last 30 minutes or so.

We only ate in the restaurant once on our firts night although the meal was OK at €65 for 2 x 2 courses and a couple of drinks was the most expensive meal we had all week. Beware if you decide to have the buffet it is €54 per person (excl drinks) but it is 3 for 2!

The swimming pool is a fair sized with a kids pool next to it and there were plenty of sunbeds around the immaculate grounds (although we did arrive early May and overall the resort was quiet). Beach towels were available from the hotel.

To get to the beach you exit the hotel and walk up and over the small sand dune and you are there. You need to pay for the sunbeds on the beach - with the wind break and sunshade it was €12 per day.

Overall we had a really pleseant stay at the Dom Joao and would certainly consider going back if we went back to Alvor

Room Tip: Ugrade to a seaview and try to get the 3rd floor or highr for the best views

This is a lovely hotel but is spoiled by the pathetic breakfasts. The coffee was not hot. It wasn't too bad for me as I drink it black but the lads who had milk described it as cold. For some strange reason bacon and beans were only available every other day and on the days off were not supplemented by anything else. There was no fresh egg/omelette station. They cooked too many fried eggs at a time meaning they were standing for a long time and went rubbery. We were a group of 8 golfers. Tables were set for 4 but we ate at different times so that wasn't the problem. As one finished somebody else would join the table. On only one day out of 7 did a waitress come to the table and clear our used dishes.I am afraid it was all too poor for an alleged 4 star hotel.

Spent a week at this hotel in 2005, enjoyed the stay here so much, went back in April 2013, to celebrate a big Birthday!! Had a fantastic time yet again and would definitely go back again with no hesitation. The hotel itself is spotless, room was very comfortable and spacious, and cleaned every day with fresh towels daily, hotel pool and surroundings were kept spotless, staff all very friendly and helpful. There was a good choice of food, all very nice and freshly made. The dining staff were a real pleasure to meet, The lovely sandy beach is just outside the rear of the hotel, The little town of Alvor is just a short walk away, which is so quaint with all the little shops and restaurants and a good selection of pubs for the night time if you fancy going out. While there were a few things that had changed as one would expect in eight years, the standard of this hotel had definitely stayed the same

This hotel is perfect...! Clean, Bright rooms, lovely staff, lovely food.
The area it is in is lovely and quiet, great for family and people looking for a restful holiday.
It has been the best hotel that i have stayed in for a holiday.
The entertaninment was a bit disappointing . Maybe could do with an other pool table as it was great for adults and kids.
There is a shop just next to the hotel to instead of trying to walk into town as wee did for a few days before we found out, but that was are mistake, should has ask..! There is a bus stop right outside the door witch takes you to Lagos, and a few other places but we didn't get time to use it.
If there is anyone wanting to find out anything, i'll do my best to answer questions ..!
All in all the Hotel is Worth a Try..!

My wife and I have just returned after a fantastic week staying at the Dom Joao 2 , we booked a superior room self catering which when we checked were told had been had been upgraded to a two bedroom villa , which was fantastic two large bedrooms two good bathrooms , fully fitted kitchen and comfortable lounge. Throughout the stay all the staff were courteous , friendly and helpful. The room , hotel and grounds were spotlessly clean and well kept, to add to this the location for us was perfect right on the beach with direct access from the hotel , five minutes walk to beach front restaurants great for daytime snacks and drinks even better for an evening meal watching the sunset we ate at Atlandia where we were treated to cataplana a local fish stew of lobster, grouper , clams , shrimps etc delicious ! . Alvor town is a ten minute walk in the opposite direction where you will find a host of bars and restaurants dotted in and around the pretty streets and on the harbour two we enjoyed imparticular were Ruccula and A Lota great fresh food and excellent service at both , if you chose to visit we just wish you as good a time and experience as we had.

Room Tip: Try to get a villa
