We stayed here for 5 nights over my Birthday. the hotel discovered that fact from my Pestana priority guest membership and surprised me with a bottle of Bubbly on "the day". Our room overlooked the beach an had a rather small and not very private balcony , the only negative feature. We had dinner in the restaurant on 4 nights and enjoyed a first class buffet. the wine was a little overpriced but very palatable. The wifi was limited to the lobby area and went down one day, however the staff could not have been more helpful. Alvor is a recently renovated town with good restaurants and also a good base for the whole western Algarve. we were sad to leave.

Very nice hotel at the beach in Alvor. The Pestanagroup that owns the hotel have 5 golfcourses in the area, all of them very nice. Book seeview, it is woerth it! We stayed 12 nights in beginning of january 2013 and this was the fourth time in 3 years. Sun every day, nice golf, fine hotel, very nice and helpful staff.

We are a retired couple and we stayed at the Dom Joao II for 7 nights (half board) in January 2013, using it as a base for a golfbreak in which we played Pinta, Gramacho and Silves.

The hotel proved to be a really good base for the golf courses which were easily found using our hire car, as well as providing excellent access to the beach and to Alvor itself (which is a really attractive little fishing village with some remarkable and extensive boardwalks around the estuary).

The most impressive feature of the hotel was the view from the hallway just outside the lifts. From floor 3 the entire front wall of the hotel was made of glass and offers a spectacular vista of beach and Atlantic, with Lagos and its cliffs in the far distant west across the bay. Additionally, although not in view, 600 yards east were the cliffs and coves leading to Praia do Vau. At low tide the beach is ideal for joggers wishing to run on the sand.

The hotel staff were extremely helpful with a positive attitude. Particularly in the restaurant there was a good atmosphere with plenty of light hearted 'banter'. The buffet breakfasts and dinners seemed to be receiving a bad press particularly from the Brits. However, we disagreed. There was plenty of choice at breakfast with everything you would expect from a 4* and the buffet dinners we thought were excellent both in content and presentation. The hotel has a new, young chef who is keen to introduce a few traditional Portuguese ideas into the food. In our view this added considerably to our holiday experience. Certainly, the hors d'oevres were exceptional and a meal in themselves. We could only conclude that the criticisms came from the 'chicken and chips' brigade returning from the golf course. Dinner cost us 20 euro each on the half board rate and given the advertised prices in local eateries, this struck us as good value for the quality and volume of the buffet.

Facilities in the hotel were limited because it was January. The outdoor pool, beach club and kids section were all closed, but the indoor pool offers a good swim (16m long) and must be the warmest on the Algarve in our experience. The sauna was fine, but the steam room needed its temperature lifting considerably all week. There is no separately outsourced spa and so use of the health club is free (we had checked this before going in January having been caught with 11 euros per day on our last trip to the Algarve).

Our main downsides were the poor view from the room which itself was adequate but small with poor soundproofing. If we went again we would certainly pay for an upgrade beyond the standard twin. Also and surprisingly, the hotel charged 2 euros per day for use of the small safe which was provided in the room. We don't know why they do this. Surely an expectation from a 4* is that security comes with the room rate. It just seemed to be a petty addition to make a few euros. Golf club storage was free just by reception for anyone taking golf clubs with them.

All in all we enjoyed our post Xmas break and would recommend the hotel to couples like us, families and golfers.

Room Tip: Go higher and pay for an upgrade

have been here twice and am about to go again. the staff cannot be more helpful, the rooms are immaculate and spacious , the restaurant has a great selection of food at breakfast and evening.
my only quibble with this hotel is the tariff at the bar ( slightly overpriced ). only five to ten minute walk to the town and harbour

Room Tip: both times i have been here we have been allocated third floor rooms.....complete silence

I had a lovely time @ Pestana Dom Joao II in Alvor, Portugal and we have just been there this November. We consider ourselves very independent travellers so as we rented a car to drive around not only Algarve but South and to Lisbon I feel that I have not spent enough time getting pampered @ Pestana. Food was OK but could do with some improvement, some reformed ham and really odd bacon and things being served @ breakfast. Staff seemed a bit shy @ times and I would have loved to know a bit more from them on what was going on in the region so, yes they should be a bit more helpful instead of "starers". As it was end of the season I did not expect much though! As I'm also Brazilian born we could explore Portugal further as there was no language barrier from my side. Localion and Alvor beach is lovely, state of the art air conditioned gym, heated pool, great sauna and turkish bath. Rooms were clean immaculately, very comfy room... matress was a bit hard than we are used to but It wasn't a big deal. Some attention to detail will make a difference like the well used flags displayed around the swimming pool that really need changing. I intend to come back one day and I would recomend to couples and elderly citizens.

fANTASTIC HOTEL IN FANTASTIC LOCATION. We will be returning to this hotel again next year. The staff are helpfull and friendly and always willing to help. though the lady in reception trying to sell time share at one of their hotels was a bit off putting but not a major problem. Paid extra for the sea view and it was brilliant to wake up to the beautiful beach right there in front of the hotel. Breakfest could not be faultered plenty of it and large selection of fruit and cakes. Food was very good. Excellent hotel as expected of the Pestana group but they should be proud of the Dom Joao. We will be visiting again in February - WELL DONE DOM JOAO fom Maria and Rodney

Room Tip: sea view deffinately reocommended;

We have visited Dom Joao Hotel in Alvor before but never so late in the year. We arrived for a five night stay on 23rd November & were pleasantly surprised to find the hotel provided nightly entertainment throughout our stay. The facilities in the hotel are first class and the warmth of the staff is exceptional. We stayed on Bed and Breakfast basis only so we only experienced the restaurant food in the morning but there was a great variety of hot and cold breakfasts on offer. We will definitely be returning to the Dom Joao in 2013

Room Tip: We requested a fourth floor room with a seaview facing across the bay to Lagos as the sun beams in o...
