Chose this hotel in a hurry ..... very pleased we did! It's in a beautiful location. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly. Rooms were great. We were b&b and the breakfasts were really good - anything you could wish for was there (except mushrooms!!). Would have been nice if the weather was kinder, but that's not the hotel's fault! It is set in lovely well-kept gardens, and is right on the beach. Ideal. The beds are the best I've ever slept in.

Great location right on the beach; turn left, 10 minute walk to stunning grottoes and secluded beach cafes, right 15 min stroll into Alvor. Hotel room spacious, clean. As with all Pestanas, strange quirky things irritate - no irons (at all, even to borrow or hire), no kettles in room, hairdryers only by request. Bar prices far too high, breakfast good though and staff mostly friendly. Would come back again if cheap enough deal.

This is the second time i have been to this hotel with 5 friends for a golfing holiday. Cannot fault the hotel, it is ideally situated for the golf courses and the beach, close to alvor for the many fine resturants and the staff are all very helpful, looking forward to returning

My teenage daughter and I stayed at the Dom Joao for October half time and had a FANTASTIC holiday!
We arrived on the Sunday at 9:30pm and were immediately asked if we would like to get ourselves something to eat in the dining room while the reception staff checked us in. When we returned to the reception desk around half an hour later we were given our room cards and welcome pack and told our bags had been taken up for us. It was a lovely welcome.
The rooms are a fair size, very nicely decorated and very clean. En suite bathroom is lovely with the BEST shower. We had a landview (carpark) on the 4th floor. All the landings do have nice seating areas for guests to enjoy the spectacular sea views so I didn't feel like we missed out.
The meals were to a good standard. Breakfast- plenty on offer, cereals, toast, pastries, breads, cold meat & cheeses, waffles with sauces, yogurt, fruit and eggs, bacon etc. I never tasted the bacon though as it doesn't look or smell anything like bacon. But I enjoyed my breakfast everyday even though the eggs and beans were a little cold if you arent at breakfast before 8am.
Dinner is a good variety every night with lovely meat and fish dishes. Good variety each night of salads and dressings. My daughter is a vegetarian and it wasnt quite as great for her...... Most nights the soup was suitable for her and then she would fill up on salad, potatoes, rice and bread. It did get a little boring for her. The desserts were gorgeous every night though. It was always hard to choose.
My only whinge about the hotel would be the bar.... A White wine with lemonade and a pepsi costs 9.40 euros!!!! That is outrageous and can not be justified in any way. The bar staff on the whole were very pleasant and friendly, except one rather grumpy older chap who made you feel like were just an irritation to him. Antonio who runs the dining room is wonderful and the waiting staff were great and work very hard and some long hours.
We didn't use the outdoor pools as they were a little too cold for us but we used the heated indoor pool every single day. Such a pleasant area, very clean and quiet. We mostly had the pool to ourselves which was great. I've seen other reports stating that there is no changing area near the indoor pool but there actually is. It's just not in an obvious place. There are very smart showers and bathrooms at the top of the steps near the spa reception desk.
The beach is incredible, a 2 min walk through the pretty gardens and your feet are on the sand. Lovely clean beach with turquoise sea that goes on forever. I do recommend good beach sandals though. The sand is full of shells. Whole ones and broken ones and they do irritate your feet a bit. If you walk left along the coast you come to the gorgeous coves and smaller beaches and nestled into the rocks is Canico restaurant which has one if the best views in alvor.
We took a bus trip to Lagos during our stay which I would highly recommend. You can buy return tickets from reception and the bus stop is right opposite the hotel. Reception will provide you with the timetable.
We also took a trip to Zoomarine organised through reception for 60euros. It was a great day and again well worth it.
Alvor is a lovely town with a small Marina lined with restaurants (I would recommend restinga ria and the yacht club) and lovely narrow streets with shops and bars. There is a small supermarket called Alisuper in the town which wasnt great and a little overpriced. The orange supermarket which was nearer to the hotel was better for availability. Just walk out the carpark, turn right and follow the road it's only a couple of minutes walk.
TO get to alvor town you turn left out of carpark and then left at the roundabout and then right.
There are some minor things that I think they could do better, like tea &coffee facilities in the room, hair dryer in the room as standard and the drinks prices!

However we loved our stay here and we will definatley be returning :-)

We've been to Alvor 6 times in 6 years. Stayed in the Delfim once and it was nice but Dom Joao is streets ahead. Great location... right on the beach. Pool is big with plenty of loungers. We even had a look at the Dom Joao beach club and decided to get a studio apartment for the next 12 years which is even better as they have their own pool! Only downside with this and all the Pestana hotels is the drink prices in the bar. I know hotel prices are always more expensive but they are extortionate in all pestana hotels. So the added bonus of a fridge in the apartment is nice for nuying in the supermarket...
