“So good we bought for the next 12 years. But won't be at the bar...”
Reviewed October 30, 2011

We've been to Alvor 6 times in 6 years. Stayed in the Delfim once and it was nice but Dom Joao is streets ahead. Great location... right on the beach. Pool is big with plenty of loungers. We even had a look at the Dom Joao beach club and decided to get a studio apartment for the next 12 years which is even better as they have their own pool! Only downside with this and all the Pestana hotels is the drink prices in the bar. I know hotel prices are always more expensive but they are extortionate in all pestana hotels. So the added bonus of a fridge in the apartment is nice for nuying in the supermarket...

Booked a one bedroom villa but was updated to a two bed roomed villa. A little dated but very clean and the upgrade was most welcome.
The hotel was very good, everything was spotless and the bars and restaurants were excellent although a little pricey.
Location is first class - 10 minutes walk from Alvor centre and right on a beautiful beach.
Reception staff can seem a little abrupt but I think this is mainly down to them having both too much to do and havinf to converse in a non-native language.

Husband and I visited In June and loved it so much that we took kids back in October, we asked for a land view room this time as the sea view rooms got really warm even with air con.. Rooms just the same.. Got 2 adjoining rooms after e mailing hotel with request.. Hotel is spotless, breakfast is great, don't expect full English, but plenty to choose from.. Too many nice restaurants in alvor to stay in hotel at night.. Would definitely stay again, only negative.. Cost €13 for small pizza and coke on room service..

We have just returned from a great holiday and the hotel could not have been better for us. Ten golfers playing one of the Pestana Golf Courses each day booked for us by Golfkings in Glasgow including flights and car hire and B&B in Pestana Dom Joao II for a week at the beginning of October was rterrific value for money and we are already arranging to repeat this next year. We got together only for one drink before going out so didn't mind the price being a bit high and did not try the food at night but it looked very popular. There was a fridge in the room which was filled with drinks by us and great when we wanted to relax. A bottle of the Maciera brandy served well as a nightcap and to fill a flask for the home journey.
Breakfast was great and we asked for an upper floor which looked out on the the landward view but the sea views from the lift hall are smashing. A swim in the sea and the pool before and or after the golf was great fun and brought back childhood memories of playing with my pals and brothers. The sea is much warmer at this time of year but the waves can be a bit powerful and a few of us nearly lost our shorts as well as our footing but great fun.
Alvor is an enoyable walk away and changed where we ate every night and it seemed to improve every time. It was always good value especially the house wine which we usually had plenty of. The sea food at the waterfront was exceptional. The Irish bars were best for the sing songs and live music but ther plenty of others to choose from. Lagos is also close by and we went to Mullens for another exceptional night of food and drink there. 10 euros in a taxi or I am told 1 euro on the train gets you there.
Staff in the hotel are all very nice and pleasant when you greet them and we had help every time we looked for it.
Alto Golf is a challenge if you are not straight as there are many trees and private land surrounding the course. Silves has some beautiful holes and many elevated tees with spectacular views and much more forgiving. The only down side is the cork factory which were we told olny blows steam but it is very smelly steam and caught our throats for a few holes. Vale de Pinta and Gramacho were a wee bit difficult to find but were wonderful courses manicured and designed to the highest standards. Hard to score on but some of us managed better than handicaps so achievable. Bunkers at times proved disappointing for quality everywhere and would have thought sand would be an easy commodity to find.
There are mini buses as an option for transport but they only carry 8 as far as we could see. There are many golfing groups from Ireland Wales and Germany as well as sunbathers and there is no shortage of beds at the side of the pool no matter what time of day we went down. As I have said already we will return next year again so cannot give a higher recommendation.

Room Tip: Email ahead and ask for an upper floor. If you are likely to spend time on the balcony pay thee xtra...

Tis is a beautiful spot on the stunning beach of Alvor. If you walk 5 minutes to the left there are incredible alcoves and rocks to wander around or find a little spot to sunbathe. The sunsets on the beach are divine. There is an indoor pool at the hotel with a sauna, nice for chilly evenings in sept. The hotel bars are pricey but a wander into town is easy and there are great places to eat and drink. Loved Ruccula and Salsa Bistro for dinners. Alvor is quiet but natural and pretty with plenty to do.
