Friendly helpful honest staff
Clean hotel, grounds, rooms n toilets
Nice gardens with wildlife
Rooms basic with air con- beds ok- no kettle in room
Pool snacks - good variety (con- but at certain times)
Water readily available from water machine by pool bar, main reception and restaurant saved us a fortunate from buying bottled water
Hotel recently refurbished in public areas
AI- no alcohol (other than beer) served before 7pm not great if you don't drink beer or fizzy
Sauna n steam room have to be requested to be turned on, inconvenient as they take awhile to heat up so some guests were left waiting a long time before they could go in
Pools cold but seems to be a common theme for European pools- cleanliness of pools were ok but indoor pool often seemed cloudy (being an ex-lifeguard I know that a cloudy pool is not a clean pool- pool maintenance perhaps need to keep a closer eye to ensure that a regular cycle is done to keep the pool water clarity clearer) further to this the Pools seem short on water so not properly cycling, at times very low and now even running. Not good for water borne issues!
Food choices poor selection - edible but not fantastic very basic even school dinner style at times
FYI- dogs seem to be constantly barking- annoying at times!
Tldr; This is a 3 star not 4, okay for a basic get away but I wouldn't go here for a main family vacation, if your a stag or hen do stay away!
pools are good design but need better care of plant equipment and daily maintenance, pools look clean but don't circulate. I don't like a stagnant pool. I do like that the staff they are great and most seem to be tentative but they give the impression management are poorly researched for all inclusive and try to save every penny at the expense of the customer, slow to adapt to change and generally poor at managing the hotel. Options on food and drink repetitive and meals same every night except protein changes or sauce changes.
Overall acceptable for last minute run but if you have time to research do it and steer clear of here until things change shame it's not managed better or it would be great.
Well we arrived here at the beginning of April and we showed up on a coach through another run down resort with an empty pool and were like oh dear get the phone out better make a call.... Got to the bottom of the hill to find the yellow Alvor outside is okay looking at the hotel but reminded me of Carl pilkington, to quote him, "do you stay in the palace and look at the cave or stay in the cave and look at the palace"
This hotel is located in a run down town with not much to do after pools close no entertainment for anyone at hotel or locally especially the kids only the same singer every night apart from Sunday, who was ok.
Went inside and were actually greeted with a nice looking foyer and a recently refurbished area. We checked in with no problem at all. Was very quick and the lady was very friendly and told us all the info we needed to know about the hotel. we got our request of a pool view from our room which was a nice view and needed or you looked at a derelict tatty pool.
Went to the pool, as we're both ex lifeguards and know a thing or two about pool plant operations we noticed straight away the indoor pool cloudy and 2 inches short of the drains and not moving... Err no thanks not getting in there, outside main pool was same except not cloudy but was very cold (but it's April and Europe so would be fine in summer) would I use the pool? Probably not! whilst looking clear it is not being filtered...
Also noted not many sunbeds will again be a fight for them as there was at times in April! The sunbeds are ok- some a little tattered and worse for wear, some need replacing as found a few broken ones. Also when we stayed it was quite windy at times and on more than one occasion some of the parasols flew into the pool!
Gardens and grounds are pretty however.
To the bar!! BIG PROBLEM! asked for a gin and tonic to be told no we don't have that. We only have beer or fizzy or juice.... Eh? No wine no spirits?! I was told not until 19:00 at the inside bar, so this left my wife with nothing but coke all week.... so much for cocktail on the pool.... We were later advised this was the managers decision, very short sighted manager, you can't sell half all inclusive and pick and choose what and when, I suggest you change this soon or your going to go bust with unhappy customers, several other guests complained whilst we were there but still no changes, this is our biggest gripe it's not the all inclusive that we were sold and although we aren't heavy drinkers we like a different drink not just beer or fizzy! Worst all inclusive we have ever been to. On one day they ran out of milk for the coffee and had some inside but we were told they would have to requisition it and would not be available today....madness beurocracy just go and get it...they are not good at replenishment really here, once it runs out that day that's it...
Then there are the snacks... Only available in 1 hour slots before and after lunch and it was a mad rush orders forgotten or different and were taken by the poor 1 man on the bar also serving drink, these were made in the restaurant and there is a closed terrace bar these should be served there all day and problem solved. Although inconsistent and again badly managed, snacks were welcome and were good when you finally got the order.
Then came dinner... Very odd, no sort of full meal, kind of a pick and mix and nothing complete, also some dishes were not hot. Reminded us of school dinner but was edible but again cheap everything and not always nice, real lack of variety often just a different meat or pasta sauce. Soups were mostly ok and different each day, this is not 4 star food, very low quality.
After the dinner we went to the bar- good variety of spirits and good seating but not enough of it (will be tight in summer as not even enough seating now in April) some people had to stand up! There was an outside seating area but no open bar out there- would be ideal for the warmer summer months!
Our room was pool facing, walls are tired but okay needs a paint really, beds are a bit old but okay, the bathrooms however were good always hot water looked clean and nice looked recently refitted and showers were good. The rooms were cleaned daily and to a good standard! Please note that there are no kettles or tea/coffee in your rooms. Only down on the room really was the tatty green plastic garden furniture on the balcony again not 4 star standard.
Then came breakfast...wow... Not good, bacon was more like ham and cold, the egg was scrambled only and was always cold but edible, the baked beans were like tomato seawater, they were so salty, the preserves were also not good and they ran out of honey 1 day asked for more the man walked off and didn't come back, no honey for the rest of the holiday either....!!!!
The coffee was disgusting for breakfast and yet there is a coffee percolator that is not used, this would be great for breakfast... Made no sense at all again poor management decision. Only good thing at breakfast is that although it's not good quality there is at least a full selection.
Overall the hotel does have potential if management decide to properly research and spend money on decent products to ensure that the guests enjoy their stay and get what they have paid for.
We did enjoy our break but wouldn't stay at this hotel again.
