Just back from spending Christmas here and must say will definitely return.Got lucky with the weather, was raining for three days before our arrival ,our driver told us (Alvor Transfers Direct-would recommend) but sun was hittin 18 to 20 degrees most days.
Lovely friendly staff at reception must say upon arrival. We booked the sea view room which would recommend as really had some relaxing evenings just watching the sunset.Room was perfect for two people, would have preferred bit more room though.Tv even had bbc and channel 4 so my wife was happy getting her fix of soaps.Bathroom was spacious with shower and bath.
Breakfast at hotel is definitely worth it .All you can eat, really does set you up for the day.Only had dinner once on Christmas eve in hotel.was a self service buffet(starters, main course, dessert and wine included) which cost 70 euro each.A bit steep we thought and was lacking that little Christmas buzz that you want to see.Did not use swimming pools so can't make comment on them.
For location you cannot go wrong. This is right beside one of the most beautiful beaches. We loved getting the elevator down to the beach and just taking a 20 minute stroll into alvor town.Perfect for walking off the breakfast. In Alvor visit the restaurants Vagabondos and Passion Food.Great food.
All in all a great hotel in a great location, will be back****

We found the breakfast was very good, but the Dinner was poor, and very expensive.

We stayed here in the October half term with our 15 year old daughter. We arrived and was welcomed by very friendly staff, shown to our room which had a nice step up patio overlooking the garden and partial sea view (room 164) it's was also nice and quiet.
We awoke to beautiful sunshine and had a great breakfast that would suit anyone every morning and we loved the idea of Champagne and the long haired portugese pianist in a suit!!!
The resaurant for the evening meal was lovely although a little expensive and the buffet was expensive at E40 for an adult let alone a 15 year old girl who doesn't eat that much.
The outdoor pool was freezing and couldn't venture in that one 14 degrees every day! The indoor pool was nice and you could use that to cool down as it was only a few steps away.
The beach was great and we had enough shade where the beds were if we needed it and even the toilets by the lift was very clean as were the showers there.
We had massages in the salon and they were very good, well worth the money.
The overall cleanliness of the hotel was fantastic, toilets, stairs always hoovered floors always washed, we had clean towels after our shower in the mornings and when they came and turned down our beds at night and placed our chocolates and nightware on our beds we had more clean towels.
The reception staff were outstanding best service we've had in a hotel for a very long while, we needed a break to relax and unwind and Pestana Alvor Praia helped us acheive this and we will definately be going back next year

We normally stay at the Dom Joao II, but it was closed for refurbishment this year so we decided to upgrade to the Alvor Praia which is five star. We were not disappointed.

The hotel was very good. The room (242) was well located and very clean - fairly large with a good sized balcony complete with very comfortable sunbed and cane chairs and a lovely sea view. A higher floor would have given a wider view of the beach, but we were satisfied with the view we had. It is good to sit watching the small fishing boats bobbing around late at night - catching tomorrow's dinner whilst drinking the local Alvor wine. Welcome bonuses were fruit and water in the room on arrival - and a wide selection of toiletries in the bathroom.

Hotel staff were attentive, spoke excellent English (as is the norm in this part of the world). The outdoor pool was extremely cold - this is not heated contrary to any reports which say it is! I swam in the sea and then in the pool - the pool was much colder than the sea temperature. The indoor pool is warm though, and is conveniently located next to the main sunbathing area. The indoor pool has lots of fun goodies - jaccuzi, whirlpool etc. The sunbeds were rather basic - certainly not up to five star quality. Free towels though.

Breakfast really was an event. We were serenaded by a pianist every morning which set the tone of this meal. A wonderful range of foods from fresh fruit to omlettes and waffles which were personally cooked by a wonderfully competent chef. The sun shone for us and we were able to sit out on the terrace to eat which was a bonus.

We did not eat an evening meal in the hotel - the cost was E40 per person, with wine that would add up to around E100 for the meal for two. A 35 minute walk along the beach at sunset took us into Alvor and lots of wonderful restaurants at half this price. We paid on average around E50 for a meal for two - and lots of fresh fish on the menu. Try Vagabondos for rack of rib, Galeria for Monkfish (and brilliant photographs on the walls), Portabellos (previously Hellmans) for freshly cooked pasta and Italian fare - and a view to die for at sunset.

A taxi back to the hotel cost E3.95.

We love this part of Portugal and go back at autumn half-term every year. Even when it rains we are not disappointed - this year the sun shone every day (around 25 degrees daily) and we really were able to completely relax. We will go back to the Alvor Praia next year. It comes highly recommended.

We have just returned from our holiday on the 20th October at the Pestana Alvor Praia, and believe it or not, we also stayed in room 208 which, we thought, was very conveniently located down the corridor from reception and we didn't have any problems with it at all. We requested a garden room, which we got, with a lovely lawn area but also a sea view, which was an added bonus. The room was nicely decorated, the furniture nice and tidy and the beds and pillows very comfy. We must admit though that the room did get quite warm at night even with the air con on, so we are sure it wasn't working efficiently but, apart from the slight humm of the air con we were not disturbed by any other noises (or from this air con plant next door which we didn't even know existed). So, we were happy with the room and the hotel in general. We wouldn't say it was five star though maybe four. I think it is five because of the position on the beach which is very beautiful and, possibly because of the facilities available. We only ate breakfast at the hotel which was fine with lots of choice. Drinks in the bar at night were quite expensive.

Alvor town is really quite nice. Cobbled streets with lots of bars and restaurants but not rowdy at all. Didn't see any night clubs. Dicey O'Reilly's is good fun (Irish Bar obviously) which has a live singer Jason who is actually the owner of the bar. We had a few good nights in there. Get a taxi down to the harbour for the good fish restaurants bbq'd for you.

We were on a golfing holiday and played Gramacho and Pinta, which were great, Morgardo which was different from the first two and not as hilly but still a really good course and Penina which was my favourite. The weather by the way was in the 80's every day which was amazing for mid October.

We hope you have a good a holiday as we did.

Myself, my husband and our 11 month old daughter have just returned from a one week stay at the pestana Alvor Praia hotel. We were very disappointed, as this was our first holiday with our daughter and also as the hotel is also far from cheap, we were expecting a quality hotel. We had requested a superior sea view room, the room we got (634) turned out to be far from superior, we had a nice sea view but the room was small, scruffy and certainly not what you would expect from a 5 star hotel, we asked for a better room and were moved to a slightly larger room, but room was still shabby, furniture old and battered, very basic. Food in hotel was ok, service was ok, some of the staff very serious and sullen. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone, particularly anyone with small children, as rooms are small, and also rooms have no kettle, sink, etc which are useful with children/babies for bottle making etc. All in all very disappointing and we will not be returning.

The hotel is nothing to write home about, simple, concrete 70's style with nice grounds. The rooms are good size but basic and clean, we had a garden view room and it came with a nice outside terrace. We requested an extra chair on the terrace and it was promplty brought there. Breakfast was great with eggs and pancake stations and many other options. Lunch was ok, for us the salad bar was the best option as the sandwiches we ordered were not that good. The best thing about the hotel is the beach. It is truly unbelivable, you can walk for miles. Make sure you get your beach chairs before you go for breakfast because by 9:30 am all the beach chairs were taken. The restaurant on the beach to the right of the hotel (as you look to the Atlantic Ocean) is very good, we had dinner there twice (not part of the hotel). The beach is the main attraction here and while the hotel is just OK its beach location makes it a place I would return to.
