“Breakfast / cakes and coffee”
Reviewed August 12, 2012

Found this gem about 3 days into our holiday and I ended up here every morning for an English breakfast ( my only British meals while away, great for soaking up the night before ;0) ...) Great choice of toasties, sandwiches, cakes etc. also great coffee. Very popular with the locals for coffee's.

“I FELT RIPPED OFF!”
Reviewed August 7, 2012

Silmar is in an excellent position based on the corner of the main square with tables in the square itself. An ideal place to sit sipping an after-dinner brandy and watch the world go by? Yes - until you get the bill!!! I was charged more for a large brandy than you'd pay for a full bottle at the off-licence just a few yards away./
I've never eaten there and after this experience I never will.

“Do not fail to eat at this Restaurant”
Reviewed July 13, 2012

We walked past Silmar Restaurant on our first few days as we wanted to go down to the harbour to eat. We did promise the Reps that we would give it a try one night and they respectfully acknowledged us without re-approaching us on each night we walked past after this. We appreciatted this as we did not want to be harrassed daily. However one night we thought we'd keep our word and eat here. This was a promise that we are glad we kept

To say that the food was good would be an understatement, it was quite simply the best food that we eat in Alvor. The value for money was exceptional as the Silmar is located on a street away from the harbour. In Alvor the harbour restaurants are more pricey, yet all the Alvor restaurants serve freshly caught fish. You pay for the privelege of a nice view.

On our first visit we were recommended the stone steak by the Manager. Listening to his description, I was expecting something similar to a sizzling dish but what we recieved was far superior. The dish was presented on a wooden board with plate and a very hot stone slab. The waiter then presented the largest fillet steak I have ever seen and placed it on the hot stone. I know this sounds like the size of the fish you caught, but trust me, this was the biggest steak I have ever eaten. This was great as you simply trim the pieces of steak to your own required size, (mini bites or slices) and watch your steak cook itself in front of you while you have total control over it. You can eat every bite as you like it - rare, medium or well done. This was served with delicous home cooked chips, sauteed vegetables, salad, and 2 sauces in pots (mushroom and peppercorn). As the stone is so hot, you could cook your tomatoes and onions off the salad if required, and even heat up your chips if you eat slowly. This stunning meal cost just 15 euro's and was accompanied by a complimentary bottle of house wine.

As this meal was enjoyed on our penultimate night, we returned on our last night and we sampled the Turbot - which was cooked beautifully and served as fillets with sauteed potatoes, Salad and veg. The manager was very helpful and only too happy to tell us all we wanted to know about each dish.

The drinks served were also the best value for money that we found in Alvor.

All in all, 2 wonderful meals, value for money drinks, great staff, and regular entertainment provided on the terrace

If you are staying in or going to visit Alvor, Do not fail to eat at this Restaurant, you will not be disappointed!

“Lunchtime treats”
Reviewed July 9, 2012

We often eat here at lunchtimes as they do very nice omelettes and burgers and it is in a pleasant location. Clean, friendly service and reasonably priced.
