“Brilliant for young children”
Reviewed July 3, 2013

We spent 11 nights here from he 16th June with two young children 2 and 4. As it was the first time abroad with the girls I was nervous. But I did need to worry at all. Some of the negatives on here we to our benefit to.

The rooms firstly are spacious and able to close off an area in the evening for the girls to sleep. A bathroom excellent with a full size bath and two shower heads over. The lower, perfect for little ones to stand under and on full power quick to run a bath. Cleaned daily and very polite cleaners.

The pool area, there is a smaller children's pool at one end which under the sun warms up nicely throughout the day. The main pool is cold, but I must say if you get yourself in its quite refreshing, just a struggle if you aim to walk in. There are plenty of sunbeds, parasols is a different story, but for 8 euros we purchased one and used it around the pool and took it to the beach.

My girls loved the train to the beach, it does get busy but the driver always made sure all got on. The beach is lovely and clean and we purchased an area with 2 beds, a side windbreak and a shade hammock over the top which sets you up the day. Also, there is a box full of buckets and spades and toys which the girls made full use of and did not have to purchase a thing.

The food. I agree with the comments of the noise in the dining room but it put my mind at ease with having young children and did not have to be on guard of them disturbing someone elses dinner. It did not matter if the children were children has this is what its set up for. Easily cleaned with each dropped crumb and spotless high chairs. There is a children's buffet area, and food that even got my picky 4 year old to eat. My husband loves fish and couldn't fault it any night. Also if the girls were not hungry at lunch or missed at snack times, there is crisps, bread, ham, cheese and some hot foods to get them by not forgetting the ice cream.

Entertainment, we never went to the evening entertainment we took evening walks into the square and the harbour. We bouncy castles 2 euros for 50minutes, other rides and my girls favourite a train with 2 carts that goes around in a circle for 1 euro. By which time, the girls were tired out. So again it was a bonus for us the all inclusive and entertainment finishes at 11 as you were assured silence. We were also in a room practically opposite the lift and close to the bar area and slept soundly each night.

The play area is fantastic for younger children with more than 8 different slides, it does get hot during the peak of the day but other than that cant fault it.

We did not take a buggy with us as we did not have any spare room in the car with luggage, but managed to get one from the Thomson reps as soon as we arrived.

Day trips, we went on the Fiesa evening trip, which is large sand sculptures in shape of music heros over the years. With a little children's section, again the girls loved seeing a huge noddy, hello kitty, mickey and Minnie and many more. You then go to a horse stables and school where both the girls we able to go horse riding in a little arena and sit back with a glass of champagne or orange juice and snacks.

Now if you love animals you must go to Zoomarina. Its brilliant with show after show of dolphins, seals, exotic birds, pirates, birds of prey. The park also has a large tank of other fish, some you can touch. There is rides and a lovely pool to cool off in to with changing facilities and lockers.

All in all a wonderful holiday for families. It is what it says it is a premier family hotel

Room Tip: All rooms get the sun at some point of the day. pool view in the morning, front rooms in the evening...

Dear Guest,

How wonderful it is to read that you enjoyed staying with us and that our team was excellent and exceeded all your expectations.

Our guests feedback is of great value to us, and this review it particularly interesting because you are focusing on the issue of the noise of the restaurant, not in a negative way, but in a way that has to be improved, but is normal that it happens like this in such an environment. - Family holidays.

Looking forward to welcoming you on your next visit to Alvor with your family.

I stayed at Alvor Baia with a group of friends. Upon arrival we were greeted by the very friendly and efficient reception staff, we then went up to our rooms and were pleasantly surprised, the rooms are huge with a lovely sitting room area, 2 TV's and nice bathroom with great power shower. We then had lunch at the buffet restaurant, the food choice was nice and varied, the only negative was it was too noisy and could be a little too warm if you were sat in the glass area, we dined in the restaurant just on the first evening and after that chose to sample the Alvor restaurants, as the buffet restaurant is OK for breakfast and lunch but no atmosphere in the evening and at times it was so noisy you could not hear each other speaking. The selection of drinks was good and found the bar staff very helpful, the bar was very busy when we went in June, so would imagine in high season it could be an issue and could benefit to another bar. The pool is huge and yes it is a little cold when you get in but as soon as you start moving it is OK, we partook in aqua gym, which was ok did lose interest half way through, the pool is large enough not be crowded and as the weather got hotter through the week so did the pool. We also tried the Senses Spa, which I highly recommend and is nice and relaxing, even if you choose just to use the spa circuit. We all enjoyed our trip to Alvor and Alvor Baia and we shall certainly be returning and I have recommended it to friends.

We stayed for a week in June, on an all inclusive break.

The hotel is spotless, always cleaning going on and the attention to detail is superb. The only mess is the occasional empty plastic cup that people don't bother to drop in the many bins located around the pool area. Talking of which, even the poolside bins were treated to a deep clean!

Room on top floor well appointed with a view of the mountains. Bed very comfortable and maid service unobtrusive (never saw them but room always immaculate!). Have to say the shower is excellent and the balcony was large. Nice to have a fridge freezer in the room for keeping drinks/after sun in etc.

Staff very friendly, always smiling and courteous. Bar service efficient, table service would be nice as personally I really hate queuing at a bar but it was rarely a long wait.

Pool area bright and clean, sunbeds very comfortable, plenty of tables for drinks/possessions, though more parasols would benefit the pool area.

Dining experience lets down this otherwise pleasant hotel. It's so noisy and rushed. Dining should be an occasion not a 20 minute scoff, and unfortunately the environment makes it the latter. However, the food was always varied and on the better scale of all inclusive selections. We did enjoy trying a few new dishes and the breakfasts were excellent.

Would stay here again, though probably on a room only basis or bed & breakfast.

We have just returned from the Alvor Baia after spending a week there and were very disappointed. There are a lot of pluses - the service, the cleanliness, the rooms, the spa.

However the restaurant and the food were what really lets this place down. My partner had some chicken on our second night, and the following lunchtime he became violently ill for 24 hours, and then was grey without an appetite for three days after that. Some meat and fish and prepared on a griddle and just didn't seemed to be cooked properly. We saw almost cooked and raw pork being cooked at the same time, running a risk of cross contamination. We saw sausages with two cooked stripes either side and the rest pink. There seems to be a lack of understanding of the basics of food hygiene. My partner has a good constitution normally, but I suspect if an elderly or young child ate uncooked food here, then there may be serious problems. If you are eating here, be very careful what you eat from the griddle and insist that it well cooked before eating.

We did complain to the rep Lucy, and I have to say that she was very understanding and showed great concern. She did speak to the manager at length on our behalf and he did speak to us but not with the same concern. He offered us free entry to the spa (value of 20 euro) which we declined.

The other point I would make is that the second restaurant, meant for couples, was open, but didn't seem any different to the family restaurant. There was no ambience at all, and it wasn't enjoyable to eat there. Small changes would have made a big difference, table clothes, condiments, maybe some music.

We won't be going back and we will also be writing a letter of complaint.

Dear Guest,

We cannot agree with what has been wrote in Trip advisor about Hotel Alvor Baia.
In your previous review, posted last week, there were serious accusations and therefore Trip advisor Management has withdrawn it from the online ones. Now, some days later, it appears again with a different title and with two word removed. We will not continue to contest your reviews. What we will do, is defend ourselves and our position.
To write that the food Is cold or that you do not like this or the other plate is one thing, but to write that are are cooking with cross contamination or that we are not cooking meats properly is totally different statement.
We are hoteliers, we are responsible. We aim to satisfy and to prove it we have many very happy clients in the Hotel presently and towards the whole season.

The hotel was beautiful and sleek and classy and met all the expectations from the pictures and description. Apartment was terrific and spacious with huge terrace. The beds were comfortable although as usual for a hotel a bit on the hard side for me but not hubby. The TV's were good with lots of channels in English but it was mostly American guff (if you like that !) The all inclusive drink was really good for the most part and the beer was great but the whisky was poor and I feel should definately be improved. All other drink passed quite well.

The service to the rooms and all round the hotel, the dining room, bar service and at reception was excellent and everyone was lovely and tried really hard to be helpful and spoke good English. We have a very Scottish Name and although it is very common in Scotland no-one can ever pronounce it or spell it (shame on them !) and yet here we could walk up to reception and the guy pronounce it correctly with no problem, now that was impressive !! Well done !!

Then there was the dining - food was excellent and for the most part could not be faulted and the seafood was wonderful as were many many other things.
But ...... the but was - imagine going to your child or grandchild's nursery or primary and having to sit at bare tables on plastic chairs with sometimes very little room to move through to get your buffet with many badly behaved screaming children trying to get their own way, or with temper, or with the heat being looked after by parents who made no effort to control them. It was sometimes akin to bedlam. To be fair there were sometimes parents who did a good job controlling their children but not as many as those who did not bother. When the dining room was full they moved you further out into what was the snack bar right next to where the childrens entertainment started early, disco or whatever and you were expected to be able to enjoy your evening meal here. It was bad and definately the 1 and only thing that would make me consider hard ever returning. Really the hotel should try to accomodate couples with a bit more calming comfort where they could at least talk or at least hear themselves think. Eventually on our very last night (19 June) they opened a second dining room which was supposed to make things better but while this eased the space factor it did not change the noise factor except by percentage ratio as it was open to all and the same problems could arise.

Sometimes on bad days there was little space for all the guests if it was just too windy to be outside as it sometimes was. Alvor was a nice little town and we enjoyed wandering around it but it was a bit of a climb back up the hill home unless you paid 1.50 E each to get up the hill on the bus and it was only 1 stop. Portimao was a nice place to wander round although it was quite difficult to get orientated to it. The big shopping Centre (Aqua Centre) was way out of town and had to be got at by taxi and was just all the usual suspects we'd have back home plus a few more we don't. I did feel that for all the tourists between Alvor and Portimao the bus could have just have a stop somewhere near this shopping centre on its route there and back but this was not the case.

Unfortunately all in all I think what would stop me returning was the level of the cold wind always present (not the fault of the hotel, except by positioning) and the dining situation in the hotel. Otherwise Hotel, pool and grounds all beautifully looked after

We did however thoroughly enjoy our stay overall

Room Tip: All rooms seemed to be excellent unless you want the sun on terrace at a certain time of day which w...

Dear Guest,

Your compliments and comments about our accommodations, staff, food quality and variety and the Hotel it self are extremely appreciated! We are sorry for the inconvenience caused by the noise leves in the restaurant. Indeed, in your last night the 2nd restaurant was opened and we feel this new outlet opening reduced the noise levels. Nowadays we try to have clients with small children in one restaurant and in the other, only couples or clients with grown up children.

We hope to see you back with us again here at Hotel Alvor Baia in the very near future, and will continually do our best efforts in order to reduce the noise levels in the restaurant.

Staying here at the moment, we arrived three days ago and we were very impressed at first - check in was quick and hassle free, the rooms were lovely and very clean, although we didn't have a kettle in the room I found this very odd considering we had a hob and a microwave!!!!

The swimming pool was huge and clean a bit cold but that didn't bother me at all, the lack of Sun beds on the other hand was a bit irritating!!

The biggest problem with this hotel is the food!!! it really is awful! It has been that bad that we are only half way through our holiday and we have dicded to eat out for the rest of our time here. It has been the sAme food lunch and dinner every day! it is never hot - for all the people who say the food is good, what the hell do you eat at home, I hope I never come to yours for tea!! When I complained to the manager he said the food is only cold in the green restaurant!!! Why?????

The staff are not particularly friendly especially the restaurant manager, when sitting you at your table it's like a military operation!!!

I will never come back again and if your a foodie think long and hard before booking!

We are very surprised with your comments about our food quality and variety. Unfortunately it is true that we cannot have all our guests totally satisfied. In a daily basis the Alvor Baia team does their utmost efforts in order to keep clients happy, but in this case, obviously we could achieve your satisfaction standards.
These items your have written about are normally the ones with the best scores and we are aware that this is a very complimented point in almost all the reviews.
