“Lovely hotel but entertainment needs vast improvement!”
Reviewed May 27, 2013

We have just returned from a lovely week in Alvor Baia. We were very impressed by the hotel itself. The rooms are amazing with separate kitchen area and huge balconies. We found that it was fantastic value for money. The hotel was exceptionally clean and well kept - the maids do a great job. The food was excellent (especially the lunches) and we found the restaurant staff to be very friendly and professional. The drinks were fine although all inclusive finishes at 11pm which seemed early. The soft drinks tasted a bit cheap and alcohol selection wasn't great although we enjoyed the cocktail of the day! Bar staff were lovely and very helpful. The pool is ginormous, it was freezing when we first arrived but by the end it seemed a bit warmer and was well worth braving the temperature for a dip. We had no problem getting sunbeds. The lifeguard Hugo was great. He was very professional and took his lifeguarding seriously. He has a very large pool to monitor and we found it strange that he was also in charge of looking after sunbeds when he should be able to solely focus on the pool, this may be because it was out of season and not so busy but he will need help in the Summer! We were very disappointed with the entertainment team. We found them to be incredibly rude and not particularly enthusiastic with the activities, speaking only to certain guests. The staff should be able to speak a few languages as we felt this was a barrier. The hotel advertise a number of day time activities, we found that very few of them actually happen - the team seemed only interested in the dancing activities. They really should offer more activities for adults and children such as football, volleyball, outdoor table tennis etc and the entertainment staff should monitor these games rather than wandering off once the games are set up.The evening shows were terrible, we watched the cabaret one night and it was the entertainment team doing some dancing on a make-shift stage. This lasted for half an hour and that was it. The piano man in the bar area is fine although played the same music every night which got a bit monotonous after a couple of days. Alvor itself is a pretty fishing village with lovely bars and restaurants. The beaches are beautiful and well worth a visit. The hotel's train to the beach is a lovely idea although we really enjoyed the walk. We got a really good deal for the holiday and as such were not so worried about the lack of entertainment however we would have been annoyed had we paid more. For such an impressive and modern hotel, they should address the entertainment problems as the daytime and evening entertainment really lets the hotel down. Everything else is fantastic and the hotel could easily be a 5 star if this was improved. Overall we had a lovely holiday and we would thoroughly recommend the Alvor Baia.

The Hotel was lovely, rooms were very big and clean with a huge balcony.
The food was excellent with lots of variety, would probably say the lunch was the best meal of the day.
The Swimming pool is massive but freezing cold, need a lot of courage to jump in, but once your in you soon get use to it. The life guard Hugo was very professional and helpful, but I think he could do with a bit more help as the pool is to big for one life guard.
The all inclusive drinks menu is not the best, the soft drinks are the cheap one's and there is a lack of variety in what drinks you can choose from.
The worse part of the hotel for me was the Entertainment team, there was a lack of activities during the day for adults and children, I also found the entertainment team quite lazy and rude. The night time entertainment was not much better, the stage looked like they had put four black boxes together (very tacky) and it was the same thing every night.

Stayed in this hotel last year when it first opened and it was great, couldn't fault it at all. Just returned from a week there and am glad to be home. There is plenty of choice of food if you like fish, you get three hot choices of fish and then fish on the salad bar and fish on the children's buffet table, (this is at lunch and dinner) and I was so glad to see a potato when we got home as was sick of chips, chips and more chips. The staff are fantastic cannot fault them and the accommodation is good. The pool is absolutely freezing to the point where if you do go in you need a hot drink when you get out. Not much for young children to do other than the playground and the pool, so make sure you plan ahead to keep them happy. Alvor itself is a traditional fishing village but this year we could see the decline, people begging on the street never seen this before in all the years we have been to the Algarve, and if you go down to the harbour be careful in the restaurants as you really get ripped off, two coffees 5 Euros where in the town it costs 2 euros maximum and with cakes it costs 3 Euros. If you decide to eat out there are plenty of cheap restaurants in the village, even a Weatherspoons if you really do want English food. There is an Argentinean Steak house which serves a steak from 10 Euros each and the meals are very good, also the Chill Out Bar is great for a laugh and is 1 Euro for a pint of San Miguel and cocktails are 2.50 Euros. Unfortunately we will not be returning

Just back and I must say its a pretty decent Hotel!
The hotel was spotless and the rooms excellent for 2 adults and 2 kids.
The food excellent, the surrounding area Excellent most of the staff excellent.
It's a great holiday but not for family's with kids at 6-8 because you don't have much for them to do unless you go on a day out, the hotel has an excellent park on site but it can't entertain kids for over a week.
Most of the staff in the hotel could not do enough for you but downstairs in the meal area the cleaners are downright rude and I don't think I saw one smile over my 10 days.
The entertainment was terrible lol I'm sure they will get better but can't get any worse ha ha
If you have a family make sure you take a few days out and visit Zoo marina and Slide and splash both are excellent days out, we used the reps in the hotel to book the days for us, the reps I must add are brilliant! 3 girls from England and they could not do enough for and always had a smile.
Overall a great hotel but the kids got bored of the lack of things for to do around the hotel.
Almost forgot to mention how bad the pool is!! It's absolutely freezing and I saw about 5 people in it in the whole 11 days and 4 of them were us lol the hotel is built on an hill and the pool is completely exposed to the wind coming up the hill and it keeps the water freezing cold and I mean FREEZING! Badly designed and thought out.
Like I said above overall a great holiday but don't think I will return until the kids are at least teenagers.

Just got back from Alvor Baia Sunday 19th May went for 1 week first time to Portugal. Already booked again to go in September. Had a wonderful time, The room was spacious, very clean. On a daily basis the room was cleaned and towels changed.
Hotel staff very helpful, Food plenty, great range..Fab breakfast..As much as you can eat buffet! Plenty of choice.. Just cant fault the Hotel,. My style too very contemporary, white walls. Flat screen TV in bedroom and lounge. Shower amazing!! Latest fixtures and fittings . Alvor Beach is beautiful, white sands - Weather lovely and warm..Alvor town was a lovely - its Portuguese fishing village, lovely walks and views of the estuary.. Cant wait to go back!!!!!!!!!!! loved it.

Room Tip: We stayed on the third floor and overlooked the pool.

We have just come back for 1 week in the Hotel Alvor Baia. The hotel was great, all modern coms, free wifi, very spacious rooms. Lots of food and drink all day every day! The pool is massive and there is defiantly enough sun loungers.
There is a little free car/train to take you to the beach. There is also a Spa available which we used, and very much enjoyed!
I think the only thing that let me down was the entertainment, it was very basic and disappointing. Although there was live music every day, with a musician singing and playing organ/piano.

Just got back from a weeks holiday and have already looked to go back! The rooms were brilliant and clean could close off in to two rooms if wanted which was handy, well equiped. Food was great different each night - lots of choice !! Beer and wine was excellent as normally when you go all inclusive they not great, however this was not the case. There was ten of us that went and is normally quite hard to please everyone but this hotel did !! Kids play area was excellent little ones enjoyed the kids club (4 to 11) my two year old couldn't go so was a little upset but soon got over it with play park. There is a train that goes to the beach but to be honest the walk to alvor was nice after eating all the lovely food. The entertainment at night at first was mouth dropping (bad) but it got better as the week went on, this is the first year they have got a proper entertainemtn team in so can only get better ...... ! It was my mums 60th while we were out there and we couldn't have asked for more ... Towels in shapes of swans and rose petals on bed, champagne in room and at night a cake in the restaurant. You won't be disappointed if you are booking here for the money you can't get better value.
