“Wonderful hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 2, 2012

We have just returned from a 7 night stay at the Alvor Baia and had a wonderful time. There were three couples in our group and all had a fantastic holiday with very positive experiences. The rooms are exeptionally spacious and modern and the hotel is very minimal and trendy. This could be an issue in the dining area as the noise became excessive at times but the food was excellent and staff very good so overall it did not spoil out dining. The pool was very big which allowed for a separation between the children and adults, making it slightly quieter in the middle section. It was very clean and there were plenty of sun loungers allowing space to spread out onto the large expanse of grass should you feel it necessary. This was a lovely area for the children to play safely.
Overall a lovely holiday with some very lovely memories!

The hotel is obviously new and as such there were a few teething problems. The main one being the layout doesn't really work for all inclusive. There is no outside bar, so drinks for the pool area need to be ordered from inside the hotel; not a huge problem but guests were expected to get dry and dressed to go inside, so there was no nipping over to get a glass of water in your bikini! Also, there were no toilets near the pool so a 3 year old announcing he needed to go 'NOW' resulted in a mad dash to get both of us dressed and inside across the lobby; these toilets, the only ones on the ground floor, were usually really messy due to the number of people using them. Water could only be ordered in a glass, so keeping a bottle of water in our room meant buying one from the bar - not really the idea of all inclusive! the design of the hotel mean the outside area was a wind tunnel - parasols, when allowed up, were regularly swept across the pool, and on one day, 2 loungers ended up in the pool too. The other main negaitive was the restaurant - as other reviewers have commented, this was more of a canteen - stone floor and tiled walls with wooden tables and chairs, with around 200 people eating in there at any one time, meant it was very loud. Asking for a table inside helped this a little, but still didn't make for a pleasant dining experience. There was also no open windows, which meant no flies ( big plus!) but also no air, so it was very stuffy. The staff in there were also a bit surely, although efficient.

On a more positive note, the rooms were very good - clean, spacious and well equipped. Maids were very efficient and friendly, towels were changed regularly etc. The food was fine, plenty of choice, always healthy options available e.g salad and cold meats / fish, fresh fruit etc, regularly replenished. The quality of the food was also good e.g. chick breast, steak, sea bass etc. The 'draught' wine in the dining room was also fine. However, after 2 weeks, the choice of food got a bit limited so we ate out several nights. Our 3 year old used the kids club on several occasions and really enjoyed it - the staff were very good and spoke good English. I think older children (6+) would have got bored with it though. We were on the fourth floor, some distance from the reception but still got wi-fi. Reception also lent us an extra travel plug, and were generally very helpful. The rep was also very helpful and obviously knows the area well - she was able to recommend good local restaurants etc.

The village of Alvor was really pleasant, with lots of narrow streets to wander around, and a nice harbour. The beach was excellent - 10 euros for 2 sunbeds, windbreak (which was essential!) and a sun canopy, plus 2 free drinks and use of beach toys for our little boy. The hotel 'train' got full quickly, but is worth using, particularly with small children.

We had an enjoyable 2 weeks and would recommend the hotel, particularly for families with small children.

Having been a tad nervous about going to the Alvor baia(after reading older reviiews) we were pleasantly surprised to arrive at quite a grand and contempory hotel. Like others, we had to call the maid on the first day due to the floor not being that clean and with some items like a child's dummy under the bed etc that had obviously been left by the people before us. This was sorted out straight away, which was good. We spent a week at the hotel with our two year old son, who loved the pool, but as noted before there are sloped parts before entering which my son fell several times hitting his head. The temp of the small pool is lovely but I never entered the big pool at all as it was pretty cold to say the least. There is a great park with lots of slides which my son loved although make sure and wear footwear as very hot on bare feet. I agree with most and found the staff extremely hard Working and pleasant. Again the number of people arriving during our stay meant that things got quite busy and often long queues at the bars, and the second restaurant had to be opened during our stay. The kids entertainment is pretty awful and very late on, this I feel is really in need of sorting out, but my son happy enough to run after all the other boys and girls. The spa is lovely, I had a massage at 30euros and got to use the thermal spa after. Alvor is really lovely and we will return here, eating out is not too expensive at all, and we also hired bikes out to explore the area. Lagos is a twenty min bus ride for a day out too. All in all, we enjoyed our time at the hotel and would certainly return. This hotel is nowhere near the bad reviews that I read prior to going.

Room Tip: Request a pool view prior to going

We stayed June 2012 - hotel check in was appalling, several coach loads arrived together and only 2 staff on reception to check them in and check-in was a slow process!! 2 bars served the whole hotel and again were understaffed - this is a big hotel so you can imagine the queues, even for water or coffee it was an ordeal - we ended up doing what others did and bought from a local supermarket which rather defeted the object of all inclusive. While the hotel boasts an impressive pool there are not nearly enough sunbeds to facilitate this which was annoying as there was plenty of room for more - there was also a notice about zero tolerance on reserving sunbeds which nobody took any notice of - it was a case of if you can't beat them join them so we ended up doing what everyone else did! The best meal of the day was breakfast, it all went down hill after that, although there was always fresh salad you never knew what you were getting as there was all manner of concoctions and nothing was labelled and was more or less tasteless. Unless there are some big changes to the running this hotel my advice would be to give it a wide berth.

Flights, transfer and hotel all inclusive. Travled as a young couple. Stayed 7nights.

This was a brilliant choice. Booked through Thomson and FirstChoice the all inclusive basis was ideal.
Brakefast 7am-10am, varied everyday
snaks (included bacon, eggs, sausages etc),
Lunch 12.30pm, varied everyday
snacks (burgers, sandwiches crisps),
Dinner (until 2200) vertity of food every night with a few dishes continued every day for children, fussy eaters, veggies and meaty eaters alike. Chef cooked things live such as tuna and pork stakes everday.
Lots of drinks included in the all inclusive but watch out for the tripple vodka measures. Cocktail of the day is included.

Rooms where cleaned everyday and towels changed. Free towel hire for using at the pool, wifi in lobby and cable available for laptop users. Internet room and small shop with suncream, nibbles and souviners in the hotel. Very modern hotel but could do with a bit more colour throughout the hotel and the rooms!!! We had room 005 on the bottom floor which felt like a 5min walk from reception so if you have the money i would ask for a specific room. Very big spacious rooms, 12 hangers, three drawers, bed was two sperate matresses and occasionaly pulled away from each other. Extra blankets and one extra pillow in the room. You can adjust the air con.

The pool felt really cold at 22degrees but this may have been because it was so hot outside (36 degrees).
Play park has lots of slides.
All the staff spooke english even the cleaners had a good understanding of English.
English, French and Local channles on TV's.
Shower caps, soap, and bath gel included with the room. and an ice cube tray in the fridge/freezer. x4 glasses, x4 mugs, x4 spoons, x1 small pot with lid , x4plates, microwave and a dish towel in the room.

I would advise attending the welcome meeting when you arrive at the hotel if you haven't already pre-booked activities. We recommend Aquashow Park. (Water park, theme park, reptiles, birds, swim with sea lions etc) transfere available from Alvor, pick up point infront of the hotel.

The Alto golf course if about 40min walk or a five min taxi ride that will cost around 5 euro
Local SparShop 5min walk
Supermarket 10min walk
Beach/river/board walk 30-40min walk
Lots of shops with goodies, clothes, shoes etc.
Some beautiful restaraunts if you wish to dine out.

Free train transfer from the hotel to the beach.

Loungers on the beach are 5 euros each, paddle boats, jet skiis, slides etc all avilable on the beach front.

Local bus to Albuferia = around 9 euros (Adult Single Fair), Taxi to albuferia cost 47 euros. If planning on traveling out with Alvor i would advise asking the reception desk for a bus timetable and directions to the approprite bus stop. Our firstchoice advisor directed us to the wrong bus stop resulting in the above taxi fair.

There were lots of familys with young chidren 0-14, a few couples of all ages 18-80, groups of friends.

Hotel is spectacular very large and very pool and good sized rooms. The place is immaculate as you can imagine for a hotel less than 12 months old. We have been coming to Alvor for 12 years so the village as we know is lovely and well worth the stroll down one or two evenings.

Hotel first the negatives they have no outside bar and for an all inclusive this is unusual and proves a bit of pain. The bars inside can become very busy and you are likely to queue even if you just want a water! Key cards instead of wrist bands are also a pain! If you don't want to walk miles to your room I would suggest phoning the hotel before you go and requesting a room close to reception.

Food is lovely and there is a variety although after week we ate all eaten out but that is our problem! Restaurant manager in green restaurant is brilliant and very hard working to avoid you waiting too long for the table, although cannot say the same about the blue! Maid service excellent, in everyday also u cam change pool towels everyday too.

All in all great hotel and would return, but when is full they need more staff.

We stayed here 7-21st june, family of 4 , the hotel is massive and new and has all mod cons. We enjoyed our stay here, on all inclusive basis, though you can get a bit fed up with the food some days. I would go here again if the price was right. Alvor is a lovely town, only a 10 min walk away.

Room Tip: All rooms are the same, but Take your own coffee as the stuff in the hotel is horrible.
