“Home from home ”
Reviewed May 22, 2017 for a stay in May 2017

Just back from a lovely relaxing 10 day break in this lovely apartment . We spent a week there last year and loved it so much we decided to extend our time there this year. This is truly a home from home . The owners take great pride in their apartment and seem to be constantly adding to it. This year there is a lovely new couch and new outdoor seats . We spent many evenings relaxing on the lovely balcony . The apartment complex is very quiet and kept spotlessly clean . Hopefully we will return again in the very near future.

Best home away from home ever! Very comfortable and clean apartment. Equipped with everything you need and more ;) Great swimming pool and beach just a short walk away. We were sharing the apartment with 5 friends (7 in total) and it was perfect. We were sad to leave... Would totally recommend the apartment and the host. Andele was very professional and helpful. Thank you.

Reviewed June 30, 2016 for a stay in May 2016

Had a lovely week here in May. Def a home from home . Every home comfort you could ask for . Rainfall showers, lovely new kitchen with induction hob , dishwasher , washing machine , tv with all the channels , lots of instructions from the owner re places to go and see in the area. It was lovely to sit on the balcony with the sea view having breakfast . We got taxis into town at night for €5. Called from apt and they were at the gate in a few mins. Lots of lovely restaurants in alvor . Having a car at our disposal was a good idea but we walked to the beach most days . Will def be back .

“Truly a home away from home”

I would highly recommend this apartment to anybody visiting the lovely town of Alvor. I had a lovely weeks holiday there with three of my friends and we really enjoyed our stay in this apartment. The view from the apartment and the many evenings that we spent relaxing on its balcony, have created lasting memories for us aging women. The owners have put a lot of thought into the decor and the layout of the apartment and it is fully equipped for your every need while on holidays.

“Excellent apartment with lots of space.”

What a great apartment, a real home from home, with lots of space and modern conveniences. Fully equipped with everything a family needs on holidays, including beach towels, bed linen, board games, tv's, wif-fi, etc. A nice touch is that unused items from previous occupants are left, so on arrival there was a plentiful supply of toiletries, detergent, washing-up liquid and the fridge also had some provisions, including beer!! Location is excellent with the apartment being no more than a 15-20 minute walk to both Alvor town and the beach, even with slow walking teenagers! Taxis are cheap and a weekly shop can be done in Aldi or Lidl, both just a 10-15 minute taxi ride away. The pool area is lovely, clean and safe, it can be seen from every apartment. I would highly recommend this apartment for family holidays.

“Honest review”

I suppose the problem lies with when you book an apartment with 5 star ratings, you expect 5 star standard. This isn't what we received.
Firstly I would like to mention that the apartment itself is very nice. It is clean, well equipped and well presented.
There are a few issues such as the obvious boiler problem and the owners personal items everywhere, from family photos to toiletries and clothes in the wardrobes. Hardly a professional holiday let. The fridge and kitchen and bathroom cupboards were full of previous guests food & toiletries and we had to find the cause of an offensive smell before throwing out rotten potatoes & onions. Surely for hygiene reasons the cleaner should be throwing out half eaten food and half used soap?
However overall we were happy enough with the apartment. The problem then lay in the location. We arrive, not knowing Alvor or where we were and needing a supermarket (no water, no toilet roll etc) There were no local shops (apparently there is one but it was closed for the season) the map offered showing supermarkets was obviously for someone with a car. There were no taxi information, bus information (we never saw the bus that is mentioned outside the apartment for 2wks) and being the only English speaking family in the complex is was impossible to find out.
The apartment is advertised as 10-15 min walk to both the town and the beach. This is not the case. The beach could maybe be 15 mins at a push, but the town took us a good 30 mins. We were travelling with 2 young children and my mother who has arthritis in her knee and soon realised that we needed to use taxis (which luckily were reasonable enough). My husband is extremely fit, sporty and walks very fast. On a sole trip to the chemist which is the very start of town, he timed it as 19 minutes. I would therefore say for the average person 25mins.
We use holiday lettings and private rentals quite a lot, and quite enjoy a leisurely stroll into the main town. This was anything but.
The pool area is quite miserable, it is shaded for half of the day. The handy man who looks after it only starts work in the afternoon so only unlocks the sunbed matresses then. As previously mentioned we were the only English speaking residents in the complex as the rest are Portuguese holiday homes. As much as I appreciate that we were in Portugal and therefore it is nice to mix with locals, it can also be very isolating and we were lucky to meet one friendly English speaking Portuguese family who were able to give us local information. The information folder in the apartment was simply full of leaflets in Portuguese.
The BBQ area was always full of big Portuguese parties so we wouldn't have been able to use it if we had wanted to.
I thought long and hard before leaving this review as I don't like to be negative, but realised that if I had been able to read such a honest review when I was looking I wouldn't have booked it in the first place. I would recommend this apartment to a family on a budget who are happy to eat home quite a lot and happy to use a car.
I would also recommend that the owners offer a more informative folder, maybe a guest book with recommendations and more than 1 key, especially for an apartment that sleeps 9. There is no key on site so if the one given was ever to be misplaced or the door slammed shut and locked itself there would be a real issue.
We absolutely loved Alvor and would definitely return, just not to this apartment.

Management Response

Honest Response.
The "honest review" requires an honest response to the matters raised, particularly as the comments at times appear to be at odds with previous reviews from, equally honest and independent, guests who used our apartment and who were very happy with both the apartment and its location.

Having read her comments it seems to me that Mrs. S. may have been better off looking for a professionally run "holiday resort" for her family holiday, rather than a private condominium complex like ours.

Of course we are sorry that Mrs.S,although "overall happy with the apartment" as such, she did not have the positive experience we would have wished for her. However, it is important to state the facts as they are. After that we can only leave it to our future guests to make up their minds as to whether our apartment and more in particular its location, suits them or not.

In relation to the matters raised:

1) the boiler issue is a concern in that the hot water for the shower upstairs (which was only recently installed) is affected when water is used downstairs as
it reduces the overall pressure. This problem will be reolved this coming winter when the kitchen will be replaced and upgraded and, more importantly, a separate electric instant water heater will be installed for the shower upstairs.

2) Our holiday let is not a "professional let". In fact, having been disappointed with these ourselves, we want to give our guests a more "personal" experience. We make no apologies for having personal items in our apartment. After all, it is our "home from home". Most if not all personal (clothing) items are however stored/boxed away leaving ample space for guests items.

3) Food items that are there and may have been left by ourselves or guests are there to be used by those following (rather than being thrown out). Guest or not coming into a completely empty and bare self catering holiday let with nothing there to cook with and nothing to make even a cup of tea after arrival. Of course any perished items should have been removed by the cleaner and she will be reminded to ensure this happens.

4) Apparently Mrs. S had some issues with the location. As mentioned on the website there is a small convenience shop across the road from the apartment, which can provide for all the day to day requirements. Unfortunately the shop is temporarily closed for this season (2015) due to a family bereavement. Guests were given a map showing location and distance to supermarkets in the vicinity as an alternative. Yes, a car or taxi would be convenient for these. Taxi service numbers however are listed on a sheet together with some other important and emergency contact numbers (e.g. police, medical, hospital etc.). This sheet is displayed in a prominent position behind the entrance door.

5) We have used the bus stop ourselves in the past but the particular route (11) appears to have been cancelled last year. There is another stop however 350 mtr (4 min. walk) on the main road to Alvor/Portimao (route 13 and 16) at a cost of € 1.50 for a single and € 3.50 for a day ticket (2015). An overview of the various bus routes is provided in the information folder in the apartment.

6) The information on the website regarding distance/time to the beach and Alvor is correct and based on personal experience as well as google maps (i.e. 12 min. to beach and 17 min. to Alvor). The other guest-reviews also confirm convenience of the location and the walking times mentioned. Google and I obviously do not account for the average person with 2 young kids and a mother with arthritis in her knee. Use of a taxi to/from Alvor costs approx.€4.

7) The pool area is as shown on the photograph on the website. It receives sun all day. The left side will be sunny from about 11:30 am until 21:00 pm. The right hand side receives sun all morning and will provide some welcome shade later in the afternoon at approx. 16:00 pm. Sun umbrellas are placed around the pool. Sun beds and mattresses are usually plenty full and readily available throughout the day. Rather than locking-up the mattresses the "handyman" tidies up in the evening putting back the mattresses left around by the residents in their (unlocked) stacking holders.

8) At least 6 apartments are Irish/English owned and most of the time there are English speaking families around. Of course the high season, particularly August, is the prime holiday time for the Portuguese, Spanish and French, and most apartments would then be used by these nationalities. To have no other English speaking residents around is highly unusual.

9) The barbeque area is communal with 2 separate barbeques. During peak season it is obvious that one may have to wait for a turn, but it is a great opportunity to mix with the other nationalities and meet, chat and exchange information.

10) An information folder with the necessary information regarding the apartment, equipment etc. as well as (emergency) contact numbers, bus routes etc. is provided and information is amended and/or added to as necessary. Any leaflets/brochures regarding things to do etc. we would have left would have been in English rather than Portuguese (as this is generally no use to our guests). Any Portuguese leaflets would have been left by other guests. Extra keys can be provided if requested. There are contact numbers provided for the cleaning lady (15 min. away) and owners (mobile numbers provided) to deal with any questions or issues arising.

11) The cost of a taxi to and from the airport costs approx. € 75 one way. The cost of renting a car for a week or so may not be that much more if at all and provides added convenience for getting around. However, as mentioned on the website a car is not needed provided a small 12 min walk to the beach or 17 min walk to Alvor is OK.

We are always available to answer any questions our (potential) guests may have.
