Pestana Delfim All Inclusive
Ranked #8 of 24 Hotels in Alvor
Reviewed September 9, 2013

Just got back from a weeks stay in the Delfim, on arrival we were greeted by Antonio.. very nice guy, would do anything for you and full of knowledge throughout our stay, few of the younger workers were slightly more enthusiastic as for the others pretty much old robots with little imagination.
We had an upgraded room looking across the pool and the sea from the 15th floor. Amazing view and spacious. Bathroom was nice with fresh towels and cleaned everyday.
Room generally needs a serious up-date though, that goes for the whole look of the exterior building to. Render falling off the front and paint pealing off everywhere. It might be a 4 star and 40 years plus in business but with out any money being spent on it, you wouldn't pass this as a 3 star in most guides. A serious make over needed here.

The Pool is salt water, Just what you need after a day down the beach...It has a bar which is sometimes open. Doesn't serve spirits, only beer and soft drinks.The Inside pool is tiny, the pictures are deceiving. Gym is set, within a cell in a basement. No spa.
Pool towels are only available at set times.. Would be worth leaving this open all day..?
The hotel is over run by kids. Yet there is a good mixture of couples, families (mainly Portuguese) as its they have a 12 week break from school.

Lots of golfers... Seems to be the place for golf ,with a good selection of courses available from the golf shop. Im no golfer but seems to be pretty geared up for them.

The Beach is amazing,head to the beach and head left where you'll find little alcoves and small beaches around the corner. Ive attached a picture.

At night take a cab to Alvor for the nightlife10 euros there and back right outside the hotel.There you will find funky bars and themed restaurants cooking amazing food. We did this every night as theres little in the hotel and we couldn't stomach the evening food at the hotel.

The only part of a good all inclusive is the food and drink. You can't get this right then you've failed!

Breakfast is terrible, If you like a continental your ok . Lunch is basically dinner but average. They need to try cooking up some variety for evening meals. Not everyone wants fish every night. You get one chef every night cooking one type of meat. Salads are good, you'll get one counter of dessert, wasn't bad. Ive had better at a 3 star.This was the main let down for us, needs improving. Didn't see a kids section for dinner, but plenty of kids screaming and playing around like a creche. Would be ideal to have a kids section away from adults.
Water for the tea is warm, plenty of bottled water,beer,wine and drinks are good.
Night time entertainment in the hotel was for the kids and very poor.
Hotel main bar opens at 7- 12 midnight, Could be open 24 hr or open earlier ?

Overall holiday was average for the money paid. Glad we had the location and the room. Alvor and the beach made our evenings. Some serious improvements to make before ever considering a second trip to the hotel. Alvor I would go back tomorrow. I just wish these owners would listen to there guests and make the adjustments as this could potential be as great as I hear... it used to be.

Room Tip: Ask for a room looking directly over the pool. Request a double bed as they mark this as twin on you...

I liked the hotel. Is clean but the rooms are vintage. The food is good, but the all inclusive isn't the best. I saw the pool bar in the pictures, but when i went i cant use because were closed. I recommend but dont expect a 4* actual, expect a 3* vintage.

It is Pestana all inclusive hotel in the Algarve. The building is clearly dated (there are still red and green buttons to turn off/on the tv ...and the a/c control ...) and deserves some updates (furniture, carpets, general decoration).
The localization is premium, a couple hundred meters from praia de Alvor - easy to walk. The salt water swimming pool is rather large - the only reserve is that the water is not heated, making it in August 2013 1 degree cooler (24C) than the sea (25 C). There are also 2 tennis courts.
The service, in my opinion, is very good. Minor problems (cot matress, for example) were promptly solved. Check in and check out were fast and efficient.
The food is good. Of course, feeding more than 1,000 mouths, specially in dinners, is a challenge - sometimes you just have to wait - but I never waited more than 10 minutes.
One sugestion - the handicaped parking places near the main entrance were always occupied by Mercedes and BMW's - usual in Portugal. The hotel management should prevent this to happen, locking these places and unlocking them when really handicaped people need them.

Room Tip: Rooms located in top floors have excelent views. On the other hand, it is more complicated to use th...

Does anyone remember Duty Free, the TV programme from the the 1980's. If you're struggling then pay a visit to the Pestana Delfim and you'll be transported back to the era of blue and orange decor, peeling paint, crumbling concrete and disinterested staff. I'm sure most of the sunbeds, parasols, furniture etc has been there at least 30 years and whilst they may keep it clean it's time for a complete overhaul. Our previous Pestana experience was staying at their 5 star all inclusive resort at Porto Santo (absolutely superb) and when we raised this with the Thomson/First Choice rep she rather condescendingly said "Oh but you're comparing us with a much newer hotel" as if I was choosing to buy a cheap secondhand car rather than pay the price of a new one. I explained that neither the price of the holiday nor the brochure indicated I was going to somewhere below par but our request to be moved to somewhere of a higher standard fell on deaf ears.
The staff were rather miserable and did no more than provide the basics of collecting plates etc. No chat or sparkle, no show off bartenders spinning their bottles and joking with the kids, just doling out drinks in plastic glasses with overworked expressions on their faces. The games room equipment either failed during use (balls stuck in the pool tables) or had Out of Order notices on them and in the bedrooms there were bedside radio units that must have last worked when Jimmy Young was broadcasting!!
No theme nights in the restaurant, the evening entertainers wouldn't have even made it on to the Britains Got Talent auditions, the hot tub had been filled with stones and the Gymnasium was in a room straight off Prisoner Cell Block H.
I'll be in touch with our tour company over this one as it really shouldn't be sold as a 4 star establishment in my opinion.

Room Tip: Try another hotel!

Previous posts refer to the Pestana Delfim as tired.....I would use the word exhausted!
It's unattractive exterior could be forgiven if more interest had been shown in the decoration and furnishings from lobby to room.
Engagement with staff is minimal as most service is self serve.Whilst plate/table clearance in the dining room is efficient,the same cannot be said for other public areas.This is certainly a no frills all inclusive offering with copious amounts of edible food and a wide range of drinks available buffet style.
The indoor heated pool is small (nothing like the photo on the web site) and is rather an unpleasant experience for parents.
We stayed during peak period,August,and when full the hotels lifts struggle to cope with demand.Stairs were not an option as we were on the 15th floor!
I expected better from a four star rated establishment.
I would also think hard about booking a holiday at any other Pestana hotels based on this experience.
Be prepared for the offer of free/discounted spa/theme park entry in return for a 90 minute sales pitch for the Pestana Vacation Club.
It is an unashamedly hard sell that requires careful scrutiny and informed consideration.
Upside - close to lovely beach and 5 minute taxi to Alvor town.

Room Tip: high floors are quieter. Definitely ocean view rooms.

Just returned from a 10 day stay at the Hotel Delfim, the hotel is really close to a wonderful beach.
Hotel staff are great, but the choice food is repetitive and choice of alcoholic drinks very limited.
The evening entertainment is really poor, and hotel in need of a makeover.
All that said we had a great time in Alvor, lovely place with lots of good quality restaurants especially the Por de Sol restaurant just outside of Alvor centre.....steaks are excellent.

The all inclusive package is great for my family - we're four with two small children so it is really great to return from the beach/pool/room/whatever, sit and eat. I detected however a few problems during my stay in August:
- during lunch time and dinner time, after certain hours (after 13h and 20h respectively), the space is just not enough for the amount of people: there were lines everywhere to get food, people waiting to get a table; it seems that the restaurant is not correctly dimensioned for the quantity of guests the hotel can take;
- on the grilled section, there was only meat or fish at a time; besides the grilled food, there was typically two other dishes available with meat or fish only; the fruit section was limited to three or fours different types (repeated every day, every meal);
- the afternoon snacks variety is very small: some bread, cheese, ham, butter, iogurt, tea; burgers or hotdogs, and that's it;
- on breakfast, the fried eggs were swimming in oil; if you're used to ask for an omelete, pancakes, etc, that's just not possible;
Overall, the variety of food available in hotel does not pay justice to the richness of portuguese gastronomy, not even to the availability of local fruits and products. I have found much more variety and quality in a similar package in a hotel in Dominican Republic.

Other aspects which could be improved:
- elevators: not enough and not working well. There are only 4 elevators available for a 16 floor building. during certain times, I had to wait 10m for an elevator to appear where I could actually enter;
- still elevators: I was locked for 15m inside an elevator - the elevator was packed and we pushed the alarm but after 5m no one appeared. Fortunately, I had my cellphone with me, called front desk and after 10m(!) someone appeared to open the doors. The elevator had no ventilation and very quickly the temperature raised a lot;
- pools close at 19h? During the summer, with long days it's a bit awkward that people actually have to leave the pools at this hour because the hotel staff needs to treat the water;
- access to the beach: if you have a baby and need to use a pushchair, be aware that the access to the beach from the hotel may be blocked by parked cars - this happens on the intersection of the path with an road that provides external access to the beach. It happened to us several times that we had to remove the baby, close the pushchair to be able to pass through the cars that were parked very closely together;

The location of the hotel is good, the room that we stayed was nice and had a good view for the sea and the overall service is not bad but the price is just too high for the reasons I specified above. The hotel management has a lot of work to do to make this a worthwhile all inclusive.
